Wouldn't worry about it tbh, I scratched mine after 3 days, didn't even take much. Now I don't feel so precious about it. Defo putting a skin on this as the space grey marks easily.

I don't fault people for returning ~$3000 computers with scratches on them right out of the box. Would you find it acceptable to buy a brand new car, scratched before you drove it off the lot? I wouldn't, but to each their own.
I acquire things to be used, not to look pristine.

If a fault affects function, get it sorted for sure.

But if a blemish is merely cosmetic…. C'mon, get a life, don't get obsessed.

But then I'm not affluent enough to buy a new car, and have no need for a $3,000 computer to tote from class to cafe. The small 20 year-old motorcycle that I paid ฿16,000 (about $500) for, in cash 13 years ago, is fine for me to get around on. And I scarcely looked at the base model Mac Mini that cost me a month's pay, also cash. I just plugged it in where the 2005 original had been until the day before (replacement was more cost and time effective than repair) and carried on doing stuff.

Perhaps if I was rich enough to afford a few fripperies I too might be more concerned about appearances. Perhaps it's a blessing; I reckon I have a richer life because I'm not.

Those are not mutually exclusive. It's called taking care of your possessions, purchased with hard earned money.

Simply being able to purchase a new car is not my idea of affluent. By the way, I've never purchased a brand new car either. Implying people only use $3,000 computers to take to class and Starbucks. Lol. When I get mine, there's a good chance it may very well never leave my house.

I used mine at Starbucks. In the early days if I'm to go to a restroom I could leave it there for a while. With the price it had gone up on MBP, I am now taking it with me and leaving no chance to have it unattended.

Maybe its some guy with rough fingers or something handling the computers lol

Called apple, spoke to 4 departments. All said nothing they can do. I HAVE to send my computer in first in order for a replacement to be reissued. Gonna suck to be without a computer for 2 weeks or more.

Tempted to keep mine cause of all the GPU issues were seeing and so far

All you have to do is return it (for any reason) if you have had it less than 2 weeks and buy another at the store you return it to or another Apple Store or Best Buy. If you are limited to one store just go back another day - there are so many employees working there and on different shifts that no one will remember you. If you have a BTO not in stock, that is a different problem.

You could buy a new one online and use the current one until the holiday return period. Downside would be 2 charges on your credit card temporarily.

Return or replace, it's your right to do it. Call Apple and find a comfortable way.
I wouldn't accept an such scratch, it would always disturb me, like a dead pixel.
Once seen, you always see it and get pissed off.

Mine had a similar scratch below the right speaker grill. Apple offered to expedite the replacement within 2-3 days after they received my current one.

Just got my 15" Space Gray BTO replaced at a store for the blown speaker Boot Camp issue. I showed them the scratch on my current model and was willing to bet that the replacement BTO they happened to have in stock also had the scratch. Sure enough it does.

I've given up on trying to find a clean one in regards to this scratch. I'm just happy I was able to get a BTO replacement right away for the speaker issue.

So Glad to find this thread and I'm not the only one who got a factory scratched MBP! I just unboxed my BTO 15" MBP touchbar 2.7 i7, and it had a scratch on the right side almost exactly the same as described here. I am really disappointed in Apple (and I'm a fanboy). Waited 4 weeks 5 days for this custom build MacBook Pro to deliver to Delaware Christiana Apple, and I drove 2 hours to save on tax for this order. I called Apple and they only offered "return for replacement" or refund which sucks because I would have to wait another couple weeks and possibly drive to Delaware again to pick it up. I might just return it and give up until next year's refresh/price drop. Sheesh and I happened to record an unboxing video because I was so excited to open it. IMG_6630.JPG IMG_6631.JPG

Similary issue. I picked mine up from Christiana Mall (driving from NJ) and the replacement wouldn't be shipped to me, but instead to the store. You should get an faster replacement though.

Similar scratch on mine and I thought I was just an unlucky one. This "scratch-gate" is a serious problem. This points to a quality control or manufacturing defect, and another in a long line of Apple missteps. This should have never left the factory. For the price premium (which let's face it, is simple Apple price-gouging for Cook's precious margins), for the long wait we all endured, to have this defect right out of the box and staring you in the face forever is simply unacceptable.

It's not a matter of affluence or some self-professed enlightened sense of being. It's the principle that a product was delivered defective. Sure it's cosmetic and not a functional defect but this is an Apple product we are talking about and better is expected. We all know Apple spends significantly more time and money designing their products to provide the pinnacle of usability and aesthetics. It's what they profess. And it's what customers love, based on the amount of sales Apple generates given its premium pricing. If they put all that time and effort in creating such thin design, proprietary architecture, new production methods beyond any peer in the market, why would they let that be delivered with a "dent on the hood?" Would Jony Ive accept that? Would Apple's design and engineering team be proud of that?

Based on what everyone is saying, it looks like the scratch is in the same place and of similar shape on all these Macbook Pros-- likely a manufacturing defect. Apple is really dropping the ball here. I am hoping this is just a few sporadic cases and won't blossom into a scratch-gate.
[doublepost=1480906746][/doublepost]On the bright side, there will probably be a lot of refurb 15" Macbook Pros with TouchBar showing up in a month or two :)

It looks like some sort of machining issue during production - agreed, these machines shouldn't leave the factory like this. Maybe the factory has a target and they are letting QC slip as a result!

Not the point! A machine that costs this much should not have a scratch on it. It shows the poor quality control that is going on at Apple at the moment.

It's not going on at Apple, it's going on at the factories! Apple don't say, hey Foxxcon, damage the devices before you ship! Apple say, hey, we need 10million machines by x date, get them out. This, results in poor QC. Give it 6 months and these small cosmetic issues will stop.

I agree, it's not acceptable regardless of £100 or £100,000.

With the amount of cases showing up and how similar the marks are.....

I would guess it a fault with the jig that hold the shell while all the components are installed from the bottom.

The mark would then not be seen.

Just my speculation.
But I too would be quite upset due to the cost involved in such a machine

Looking at the relatively limited reports on this thread and the lack of reports elsewhere, this issue is the exception to the QC on the MBPs and not the rule.

It is unacceptable for those affected and that's what the returns policy is there for.

may only affect one production line.

Im sure apple has tons of lines making machines.

so one line may have dirt or something on the machine thus leaving the marks.

In this thread someone said was another thread with more reports in.

Agree on returns policy

Tosh…. A machine that costs as much as a MacBook Pro should be used well, and get plenty more scratches along the way. They are rugged enough to handle it.

Poor souls who pride themselves on the pristine appearance of what should be a tool, not an ornament, probably have no real use for what they have splashed out on. More money, or access to credit, than brains I reckon.
