I wasn’t going to get it, since I was hoping for a complete redesign with usb-c & apple pencil 2 support...but my 5 Yr old mini 2 had a cracked screen & broken home button, and was slowing down. So i ordered it cause who knows when Apple will update them again...if ever!

I knew the mini 5 was going to be faster...but wow. It’s amazing how much faster it is. And the screen is so much more vibrant. Glad i got it.

Yea pretty sure I want to trade my 2018 iPad for the mini, especially with all the travelling I do with work, I would like the more portable form factor. I just wasn’t ready to dish out that cash for a mini 4 last year when it was so outdated

Now just need to find someone to buy my 6th gen! lol

The screen is amazing, love the laminate, True Tone, brightness, P3, low reflection...

I think 2 to 5 is a total no-brainer. When I did the 2 to 4 upgrade it was really noticeable. I think the 4 to 5 might be a more practical question, but I'm sure I'll do it fairly soon.

I had an iPad mini 4 that I traded in in November; before that an Air 2. The mini was wonderfully portable and easy to take around, but I felt that the 4 years were getting really long and thought Apple was killing it off. Then comes the 5. I told my wife I wanted to get an iPad again recently so I tried to go back to a larger size (the 10.5 Pro) and I just couldn't do it. It was so unwieldy and large! It was almost comical to the point that I realized I missed the size of the mini so I returned the 10.5 and went with a mini 5 and so far I have felt ZERO regret getting it. It's perfect.

Yes the design is the same but that doesn't bother me simply because I think the large bezels make it much easier to hold and use just like its always been. Besides, I wasn't about to complain much since they popped in a P3/True Tone display with the A12 to boot and this mini is SO fast its ridiculous. I've done everything so far and it doesn't lag at all. The screen is gorgeous to look at, the performance is top-notch and the upgrade of 7MP on the front facing camera for Face-time makes me happy. I use my iPhone X for photos so the 8MP shooter on here I could care less about. In short, the mini 5 is awesome and I'm happy with it.

UPDATE:

So I've had the new iPad mini 5 now for over 3 weeks and wanted to post more detailed thoughts. First, the background: I had an Air 2 and my wife had a mini 4 that we both took turns using, but primarily my wife used the mini because she preferred the smaller screen. I always had a larger sized iPad since the 1st gen iPad but when she got the mini, I would start using it more and more. Last year, I tried out a 10.5 Pro which I returned and when I decided to sell my Air 2, I just shared my wife's mini 4 for the time being. I started to get more and more used to the portability and screen size, so the mini was really growing on me.

Fast forward to the end of March 2019, and after my aunt bought her boys new iPads (9.7 2018 versions), she gave me the boys old 1st gen minis to sell so I took advantage and decided to get a new iPad after only using my iPhone basically. I was thinking about the 10.5 Pro because I could find it for $499 or less and I loved using it before. I also tried an 11 inch Pro which was fantastic but again, about $300 more. It was hilarious, but after using the 10.5 and 11 inch I found the devices so unwieldy. When in bed, they were a burden for me to use and the portability just was not there, it was actually bothering me. I told myself damn, I knew what the problem was, I was a mini man now! I could not get used to anything larger simply because I had grown to love and use the mini 4 for all that time! So the thought popped into my head to try the mini 5 despite my love of the Pro-motion tech of the Pros....

Well, I tried a mini 5 of course and I have not looked back since. Its absolutely a blast to use. First, yes the design is the same but for me, the bezels make it much easier to hold and has not bothered me once. I know for a fact that had Apple released a Pro design on the mini, bye bye to the $399 price point, and that is something I knew I didn't want to spend a ton of money on (at least for my uses). Back to the design, yes the rear camera is the same, but I use my iPhone for photos anyway. The front facing camera was more important because I face-time all the time and the 7MP upgrade was very welcome indeed! I also love the new Space Grey, it looks so slick and I'm preferable to the darker shades anyway. All in all, I still love the design and it doesn't bother me that it remains unchanged. And I LOVE that thinness, so light and portable this thing just disappears in my hands. When I use it, I never feel any weight and I can set it down and pick it up like it was a feather. Exactly what I was looking for and wanting the whole time.

The screen; it's gorgeous. Coming from using a mini 4, you can tell a difference. Colors look more vivid and the screen just pops. True Tone is something I wanted before and we finally have it and it looks fantastic on the mini. I loved looking at the Pro screens because they were truly awesome displays, but this mini screen is no slouch. Of course, when I use my iPhone X I will admit that I wish the mini's display was OLED due to those perfect blacks on the X, but again the price of the mini was surely to go up had the put an OLED in there and even then, the LCDs Apple makes are still really very good when it comes to blacks and color reproduction. Those 326 pixels per inch come into play and everything is just razor sharp, I love it.

And the performance! This A12 is insane. Yes it's not the A12X, but with the screen being much smaller you aren't going to notice any lag or slowdown on this beast; the mini 5 carries its own weight when it comes to its form factor. Everything runs smoothly and multitasking is a joy. This thing smokes the mini 4 and it isn't really close (the mini 4 is still a nice device but its now the A8 in comparison) and wow, it screams. What do you expect when you have a 4 year time jump in between devices? Another poster mentioned somewhere on this forum that despite it being $399 still, we are getting amazing value from this device. He said Apple could have easily stuck an A10 in here and called it a day but instead we get the latest A12 processor so I would agree, this is an insane deal for the price in terms of what we get. And yes, we get 3 GB instead of 4, but with the A12 and the neural engine along with it, I honestly have had no issue with speed and doing multiple things on this that would make me cry out for the extra ram. And add to that pencil support which I've also been using and personally, I have not had any issues having less screen to work with although I'm sure actual artists will have different opinions about that. But surfing around alone using the pencil is really nice to have and something I thought I would never see on a mini. And of note, the lack of Pro-motion hasn't bothered me in the slightest like I thought it would. That is something that really surprised me given that was a potential dealbreaker.

In the end, the mini 5 is just a wonderful device that packs power into a small form factor that yes, despite the 7 year same design, continues to impress with what comes from within. With a new front facing camera, beautiful screen and incredible processor the mini 5 is not to be overlooked at all.

Nice write-up. I really have to go look at the new mini based on your impressions. Thanks..

The physical design is an element that I would have liked to see changed, but in reality what we have just works and is very practical. It's a psychological thing where I think I am getting less value for my money because it "appears" I am buying something that was released 7 yrs ago? But the internals is where the meat is.

There's no comparison holding a Mini vs even the regular iPad 9.7 in bed, the latter is too unwieldly to be used in bed.

I used to do this and thought it fine, but in retrospect having used the Mini, I completely agree. I would have liked to see the top and bottom bezels a little slimmer, perhaps returning the Mini to the 1-3 dimensions and making the bezels appear less uneven, but my thumbs fit quite comfortably onto the bezels as they are for landscape use.

The Mini 5 seems a good buy, especially in the US. It’s the only Mini besides the 2nd Gen that was equipped with current specs when released. 64GB has gone from being a top of the line upgrade to the base storage, making it much more likely to last the average user for at least a few years.

It’s a shame they only offer 2 storage options these days, as 64/128/256 seems much fairer. I’m also not sure what the prices of the old Minis were on release or how those compared to the alternative regular iPad model at the time.

One thing you mentioned; I would have liked to have seen 128 GB as the base storage like the mini 4 was, but alas I understand why. I do watch a lot of movies and I have many in HDR I like to download, so it fills up quickly, but I now just have to manage things a little more which isn't the end of the world.

I could see them introducing a 128GB model at some point during the Mini’s lifecycle. The Mini 4 wasn’t initially a 128GB only model, and some recent iPhone models have had other capacities introduced at a later date.

My mini 2 is a 128GB model so I’ve gone with 256GB for my mini 5. I would have liked to have seen a 512GB model, so I expect that to give me reason enough to upgrade next time (4 years time? Yikes. Hopefully sooner). Perhaps I’m also one of the few who’d like more Pro features or more upgraded features.... Face ID is good, but so is Touch ID, so I don’t mind there, but when Face ID is added, the bezels are greatly reduced and that is a feature that I’d like to see in the mini, so bring on Face ID and bezel reduction. An upgraded rear camera is also on my wish list, 4 speakers would be cool and Apple Pencil 2 would be good, especially since I also have a iPP 12.9 3rd gen with the Pencil 2. Perhaps there could be two versions of the mini, the mini and the mini Pro.....if only there was enough demand for a Pro mini.

I just picked up a Mini 5 on 7 May and have been busy loading it up with the apps, files I need to carry, and all the many gigabytes of ITunes music. What a great little device. Yeah, I would like to have seen it copy the Pro design, add face ID, and offer a 512 storage option, but even lacking these features, this is the ideal daily iPad for me for use at home and traveling. It is really fast, has a decent screen, and is so light I can toss it in the bag without a thought.

The form factor coupled with the A12 processor make this a great little machine and makes it much easier to do work than just using my Iphone.

I got it, but ended up returning it. Text on many websites was insanely small. So much so that it caused serious eyestrain. Even though the screen should be the same as on the Pros, maybe I'm just ruined by the 120hz on the Pros. The mini's screen, while nice, just didn't compare.

The size was amazing for sure though. If Apple would make a Mini Pro, I'd get (and keep) one.

The display on the Mini 5 is actually 326 ppi vs 264 ppi on the iPP. If you found text eyestrain inducing, a same-sized version with ProMotion isn't going to solve the issue.

For websites I usually browse on my mini in Landscape mode, which gives you a larger font (though fitting less of the page) than using it in portrait like a phone. Works much better for my eyes.

Apparently I can still return my sons 6th gen to Walmart. We’ve had it for about a month though. Still, I’d much rather him have this mini 5. He’s 6 so it’s easier to hold, and it’s a beast with the A12 and 3GB of ram.

Man I was hoping to get my grandkids on the mini bandwagon - they’re just so darn cute! They all had mini 2s (and the oldest a mini 4) before I gradually started buying them the bigger ones, mainly because of pencil support.

The older ones don’t want to go back to a smaller pad. I did pick up a mini 4 for one of the younger ones for car rides, and I videoed myself reading him a bunch of books (which I KNOW my daughter and her fiancé greatly appreciate). ;-p
