After driving to Orlando to get this "phone" I take it home and unpack it only to discover AT&T wants me to personally visit a store to "discuss" my plan options. What BS!

I have never been turned down or had to pay a deposit for a phone, same thing with my wife. So now I can't do anything with this $600 "phone" until the morning. While driving to the Apple store to return this thing, I will stop by the AT&T store just to see what they say.

And Apple wants to charge me $49 for returning this thing too? I should have known better than to deal with AT&T, sorry to see Apple going this route.

Mmmmm, well, you could certainly sell it on eBay for a profit, if you want. I'm sure you could very easily sell it at cost here, as well. Probably within fifteen minutes.

But let me understand... you got denied a plan via iTunes. If that's the case, there's something fairly seriously amiss with your credit history or your financials (e.g. debt-to-assets ratio, etc). Serious enough that you (and your wife) must already know this. Did you really not see this coming?

OK, it has been well known for the past several days that there would be a credit check and that there would be a 10% restocking fee for opened iPhones. You don't have to pay a deposit, you can get a GoPhone Pick Your Plan plan (ie. no contract, but more expensive minutes) if a deposit is required. So I'd say it's worth going to the AT&T store to see what they say.

People with credit problems shouldn't be spending $600 for a phone.

There were already multiple discussions about this and got the thread locked. While I'm in agreement with you, it's the OPs money and they are free to do what they want. That's IF, they had a credit problem.

Sounds like a self-created problem.

The pre-approval has been up on apple.com for a few days, now. That would have solved it for you.

Easy solution.

Just go to an Apple store and whip out your black American Express Centurion card (like James Bond 007 did in Casino Royale) and everything is solved.

There are several posts on the forum where ppl indicated they called and were pre approved. At&T also let customers know you could go into their stores and get preapproved in person as well. This isnt iPhone, Apple, or At&T's fault that you couldnt pass a credit check. IF you believe they are in error, how about trying to pull your credit report and making sure you have not been a victim of fraud or there are no mistakes on your report.

I new that I would probably have to visit an ATT store before this thing was active. It's a messy process and I wouldn't expect iTunes to help me much

THis is why I'm getting mine and activating at an AT&T store. THough longer, I trust people who are paid to do the job, rather then myself.

As stated earlier, this has NOTHING to do with Apple, AT&T, or the iPhone, if you have bad credit or something is wrong with your credit card, have it looked at, don't just get upset with Apple for notifying you of your issue...

Don't kill the messenger....

Before I bought the iphone I made sure to call at&t and get preapproved. They said I was good to go and gave me a 19 digit approval code.

Tried to signup via itunes (without entering the code first) and it said could not approve me.

So went back and entered the code and now it said the approval code must be 9,12 or 13 digits.

Called at&t and they gave me a new 14 digit code and said they don't have a 9,12 or 13 digit code.

Went to the at&t corporate store and they checked on their system and said I am fully approved, but the only code showing is either a 19 digit or 14 digit code.

I tried removing #'s to make it 9,12,13 no luck!!

They should atleast let you take into the store and let them activate it. This just sucks.

Now all the phone lines are busy and disconnect you!!

As I said, I don't have credit problems, and money really isn't the issue here. Great how you just instantly think you know all about me. Unbelievable.

Sorry that happened to you. My pre approval code is 9 digits. Try calling the regular customer service on the AT&T site and seeing if a rep can tell you something.

First it has been a long day for alot of us and I'm sure very tired. It may be a totally different story tomorrow.

I say talk to AT&T and it may just be a glitch. I'm sure the store is being hit harder then it has ever been hit and is bound to make mistakes.

Same issue...you got it all wrong

The at&t credit software can onlyprocess so many credit reports at one time. Try the activation again and it should work fine. I got the same message you got and I have good credit.

You might want to try activating again before going to the store. ATT's computers were very wonky during the launch. I was in-store and the guy next to me couldn't get approval either. He wasn't rejected, just couldn't get approval. He was told to just get approved on-line. I don't think ATT was really ready for this. Probably why they didn't get a lot of inventory. They were not very effecient. Typical cell phone company...even the gov't could run them better. HA!
