When i visited Ireland last year (awesome country, btw), i learned a lot of interesting things about the recent history.

For those who don't know, Ireland has had a massive economic turn around in the last decade or so, and is now one of the most expensive countries in Europe. Quite the change from the international image of poor potato farmers! From what i gathered, this was in a large part due to some very clever corporate tax structures. The gov't made it very cheap for large (esp tech) companies to set up shop. This resulted in a lot of the major tech players settling in, bringing lots of jobs to the generally young and tech-savvy population. That's why Intel also has a fab there, eh?

So, whatever the general costs may be, they are likely offset by gov't tax breaks that keep them in-country.

Well done, Ireland!

Correct we have really low corporate tax here in Ireland. Lowest in Europe however i'm not so sure thats still the case. Still low anyway. But it must still be costing Apple a lot. To way Irish workers! High sallery here. But it's good that there here! Its quick for me if I ever need to send my machine in for repair. Dell also have a huge plant out in Ireland too but we won't talk about them :D

This is normal for new products, Apple will usually take the expense of flying new products directly out of China to their destination until the production catches up and they can ship a large number by boat to the US west coast and from there to other areas. My video iPod came direct from Shanghai and the early MacPro orders also did that.

Also for those curious, the stock (no custom options) MacPros (at least when they were first introduced in August) were shipping out of Apples Elk Grove facility. They used to do manufacturing there (along with the Cork, Ireland facility) but just do distribution from there now. The MacPros that had custom options (I got an X1900 with mine so had the month long wait) were assembled in Fullerton, CA. I don't know of any Apple facilities out here, so I'm not sure if this is a new facility they've built or if they are outsourcing custom orders like that to 3rd party companies.
