First order of business?... cycle the battery.

A couple of questions. Firstly how do you cycle the battery? Secondly, how do you check for dead pixels. Lastly, what else should I check (and how) once my 17" MBP arrives? Thank you in advance

Im in Canada and used my EDU discount so hopefully it'll come soon:)

I received notification from Apple (Cork Ireland) that my C2D MacBook had been despatched yesterday (20 Nov) and estimated delivery is 29 Nov. Nine days to travel 200 miles, it would be quicker to walk (nearly !!)

Dave

New MacBook came in today - 30 minutes before the estimated 8:00am. Size difference from my 14" iBook is significant - but it's good. Screen is much brigther than I expected, and the glossy screen isn't at all bad. Most PC notebooks I've seen are highly glossy. This one doesn't make me long for the preferred matte.

mine arrived today. 2gig ram, 2.16ghz and GLOSSY screen. Too bored of watching matte everyday at work. Plus my new 20inch dell screen is matte for all I need.

I am so happy! First thing, wipe off the hdd and install linux!!!!:D

I should have said "calibrate", but anyway....

From the manual:

"To calibrate your battery:
1Plug in the power adapter and fully charge your MacBook battery until the light on the
power adapter plug changes to green and the Battery icon in the menu bar indicates
that the battery is fully charged.
2Allow the battery to rest in the fully charged state for two hours or longer. You may use
your computer during this time as long as the adapter is plugged in.
3Disconnect the power adapter with the MacBook on and start running it from the
battery. You may use your computer during this time.
When your battery gets low, you’ll see the low battery warning dialog on the screen.
4Continue to keep your computer turned on until it goes to sleep. Save your work and
close all applications when the battery gets low and before the system goes to sleep.
5Turn off the computer or allow it to sleep for five hours or longer.
6Connect the power adapter and leave it connected until the battery is fully charged
again.
Important: Repeat the calibration process every two months or so to keep your battery
fully functioning. If you use your MacBook infrequently, it’s best to recalibrate the
battery at least once a month.
"

Dead pixels?.. you should be able to see them once the screen warms up.

Hi from Belfast
The Black MB's are awesome, but a tad expensive. I know it's a bit late now but you should have ordered direct from Apple in Cork. They usually dispatch within 3 or 4 days but the journey from Cork to Belfast takes more than a week!!! I have ordered things from the states and Hong Kong and received them within 4 or 5 days. I think my MB must be coming to me by donkey and cart ... lol

I am a teacher in Belfast (about to retire in January) so get educational discount. On the 1.83 Ghz MB I saved about £120 (sterling)

One of my students has the 2 Ghz Black MB, you will not be disappointed. It's a great computer and awesome to look at.

Hope yours arrives soon.

Cheers
Dave :)

any UK's got theirs yet? This delay is pissing me off. I'm having to develop on my Dell Inspiron 8000 P3 256mb laptop on the go. I need the thing now.

Are Apple always this slow?

I'm in the UK and have the white MacBook C2D with superdrive and 2GB of RAM (build-to-order from Apple online store). Here's my experience of my new MB C2D so far:

- ordered on 9 Nov (expected ship date of 15 Nov, expected delivery 23-27 Nov).
- actually shipped 13 Nov, delivered 20 Nov.
- copied my user account from my iMac G5 using Migration Assistant with no problems in about 1.5 hours.
- only one problem so far; after discharging the battery it refused to recharge and the MacBook seemed to not realise there was a battery at all. I took out the battery and reset the PMU by holding down the power button for 5 seconds. This has done the trick as the battery has been fine since and I'm getting over 4 hours of battery life.
- heat has not been a problem. The CPU runs nominally at about 60degC, peaking to about 75degC when running some Windows XP applications via Parallels, but the fan kicks in quickly to cool things down.
- installation of Windows XP in Parallels was quick and easy. The virtual machine runs faster than my work Dell laptop and I can VPN into my company corporate LAN and run some pretty specialised PC applications.

So far it's been a great machine, long may it continue!

something is wrong there. I would call Apple and complain up a storm and find out where it really is.

My new Blackbook tested out fine. Screen is even, no dead pixels that I see, and heat/fans don't seem to be an issue.

Only one problem. The battery is too good! :D I couldn't drain it enough last night to calibrate it!! ;)

The DVD drive is noisy, but I can live with it.

BTW: You may want to reinstall the OS when you get yours, there is a lot of extra crap you don't need, unless you have 20 printers, speak 12 languages, and enjoy tons of demo software....

if it makes you feel any better, I am in the exact same situation, I have the same dates for all stages, and apple now shows a UPS code but the UPS website doesnt recognise it. Hopefully it should come tomorrow if it is with UPS now!

you ordered a custom-build on the 9th and you already have it? That sucks! I ordered the stock 2ghz white system on the 8th and mine hasnt arrived yet. Does anyone else get the feeling education buyers are put to the back of the queue?

-by the way - im happy for you gettin your macbook early, just jealous that mine isnt here yet!

The only real difference I see with mine on the shipping is I ordered through ADC (which I don't think makes a difference), but I paid for the expidited shipping with FedEx.

All the shipping problems seem to be with UPS. Maybe you can get your shipping changed?....

For those whose systems haven't shipped yet, maybe you can call Apple and request the change?...

Sorry, I should have added that mine was an education purchase, so I don't think they are put to the back of the queue.

glad to hear that! i do find it very strange how you ordered a custom-build a day after mine and have already recieved it though. Guess its just luck of the draw as to where it is shipped from etc. But you would think it would work on a first-come first-served basis.

Otherwise a valid point, but the "tons of demo software" part is a bit exaggerated, as the only demo ones are the iWork '06 trial and the Microsoft Office 2004 Test Drive. Other bundled apps like OmniOutliner and Comic Life (which my GF loves, btw) are full and registered versions. So if you don't want any trial software into your machine, just leave out the ones saying "trial", "test drive" etc. The rest of the bundle consists of fully functional applications, so leaving them straight out without even checking what they're about might make you miss a useful piece of software. For after all, it's not a Dell, but most of the bundled software is actually useful (especially iLife) :)

True, but it all depends on needs. I'll be using my MacBook while visiting clients, so I don't need all the extra stuff, and I have other apps that need installing. It's nice that Apple gives you options, compared to what Dell does.

True indeed. I also did a fresh install when I got mine on Monday, as I didn't see much point in installing an Office Test Drive when I already have the full version waiting for installation, and I wanted to get rid of the extra printer drivers and languages as well. I just wanted to make sure that new users won't get the impression that all the bundled pieces are just demo versions (especially if they're used to the loads of crapware coming bundled with a generic Windows box) and miss out on some nice apps without even giving them a try.

Certainly agree. Also there is a lot of the GarageBand stuff that can be skipped to save space. Does the factory install have all those language variants of the Office TestDrive installed?... that's a lot of space there.

I also wanted to get the base install down to where it can be cloned onto a 4GB flash drive as a backup. That way you can reinstall your setup with an OSX disk and a thumb-drive.
