As I type this from my brand new M1 MBP 16gb/1tb if you're on the fence at all about graphics or gaming performance.. let me tell you I'm absolutely blown away. Cities Skylines (as my original post says) was the game I was most concerned about. I can't even believe the frame rates and graphics performance I'm getting out of such a processor intensive game. Whereas on my previous MBP I had to speed up the simulation to not drop too many frames... at normal slow speed I'm blowing away my previous MBP and with no fans or fan noise.

The real problem on that topic (gaming I mean) is just that Windows is no longer an option.
Mac gaming is just sort of an afterthought - sadly
I can report that it works flawlessly as I know have my Mac mini.
