I am now considering this option....

I know you real want to do this without a power supply and that's probably why you haven't actually done much searching on the bay but IMHO it's silly to do it the way you're planning you loose to much stuff for no gain.

----------

I already purchased all the cables required to run power from my optical bay. Is this not going to be enough power to power the titan?

I can order one of these visiontek ones. Does that mean all the cables I purchased are now useless with the exception of the 6pin to 6pin connector? I then need an 8pin to 8pin connector now as well correct?

Is the installation pretty straightforward? I saw people saying you need to solder wires on to the psu or something like that?

Again, I'm not going to pushing this card nearly to its limits. Should I be purchasing the additional power supply? Or should I just run power from my optical bay?

If this is too confusing for you, I suggest that you read the technician guide to understand better how to access each component of your machine. Just do a Google search on "2009 Mac Pro Technician Guide" and save the PDF for reference. (Can't provide a direct link because it's against the Forum rules for some reason.)

BTW, this eBay link lists Visiontek 450W external PSU which can be installed in the Optical bay. It's $50 and not as cheap as it used to be from NewEgg, but it's still an option.

OK, you guys win!

I ordered the Visiontek 450w psu. What else do I need to buy to get this thing up and running?

Considering I already bought the following cables already:

minipci 6pin to 6pin (quantity 2)

Sata 8 inch 15 pin extension cable

2 Sata to 8pin

What else do I need? And I'm hoping this installation will not be too difficult.

You're going to need a molex to go into the PSU that way it turns on when you turn on the computer. I'd convert SATA to molex and use the power thats there, I's also route the power lead in that little corner between the MP PSU and the optical bays. You'll probably need to pull the panel that hides the wires from the PSU to the main board it's just a couple torx screws.

Is there a tutorial or "how to" that you read to do this properly?

Sorry, don't really know what a molex is...

I don't need a 8 pin to 8 pin cable?

Have you read this thread about installing a PSU in the optical bay? I did it a different way and I will try and post details and pictures when I get a spare half hour. I did not take the power able out the back but through the PCI slots.

This is the one I saw : https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1460429/

But it seems extremely complicated. Doable, but complicated...

I will take a look at the one you just sent me.

That doesn't look simple whatsoever. He is ordering custom wires and everything.

He did it the way I would if I were to but it's not the only way

Just get one of these

And then I have all the cables necessary?

I use that with my sata to 8 pin? But I only have a 2 data to 8 pin cable...

Can you please confirm exactly what I need,

Considering I already have the following cables...

minipci 6pin to 6pin (quantity 2)

Sata 8 inch 15 pin extension cable (quantity 2)

2 Sata to 8pin

I also have this cable:

you need a male SATA to Molex (http://www.amazon.com/Manhattan-4-p...9196&sr=8-14&keywords=male+sata+to+male+molex) connector to go into the new power supply. You'll plug it into what ever optical bay you slide the PS into then into the PS on the other end. The power supply has all the other required cabling to go to your card, when you get it apart you'll realize what I'm taking about. The other cables you bought weren't expensive and they just might be handy down the road we all have the odd connectors and adapter cables laying around, no you won't need them but you just might in the future.

I'll take some pictures of the optical bay connector today before I go home and upload them when I get home.

Take the cable I liked and put it in here on the big side then plug the other end into the new power supply

OK,
I purchased this one because it has prime shipping. I'm assuming its the same thing: http://www.amazon.com/Manhattan-4-pin-Molex-Female-15-pin/dp/B001AQGEMQ/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8

Are you sure that the psu I bought has all the required cables? It doesn't say anything about any cables that come with it.

This is the psu I bought: https://www.visiontek.com/revisione...icated-graphics-card-power-supply-detail.html

Also,
Regarding the power cable, how will I be getting that out of the mac pro?

The cable is in the optical bays the top one is connected to the optical drive, the bottom is free. The cable to go to the card will come in the box it's PnP you'll see when you get it.

What are the torx screwdrivers I need? I need to buy that too. This is quickly getting more expensive ;)

I don't remember the size, I'd get everything running then route the cables.

I am still waiting on the psu to come in.

Hopefully it won't take that long.

I had read that there is a problem with the titans and other nvidia cards working with the new yosemite update.

Is there something I should be doing before I put the card in?

Read the thread about it.
