I went to my local Apple store to see if they had any 256 vram x1600 iMacs in stock, and was told by the salesperson that they had been told by Apple to suspend selling them until further notice. Any validity to this............and if so why. Maybe thats why so many custom builds are sitting in Shanghai.

I'm sure something official would be released by Apple regarding this if it is indeed the case, as this would indicate a major issue with the machines.

Keep an eye on MacRumors to see if a news story gets reported, otherwise, I'm not sure if the salesperson has all the facts.

Regardless, thanks for passing this along...

The sales person was quite sure of his info but strangely hesitant on giving details. Part of his schpiel (sp?) included offering to do a custom order in-store with me. He said that they had several 20" iMacs w/256m vram "out back" but unfortunately were unable to sell them.

Either that or he was trying to cover up for the fact that they were sold out at the time. ;)

Hmm, well that would be a different case then, definitely not sold out. ;)

Yeah, you would think that something serious would be up for a salesperson to essentially ruin his own sale and resulting commission like that... As I said above, if there is indeed an issue Apple would make some sort of press release on the matter, and soon one would expect. Keep your eyes on MacRumors.

And then of course it could just be a dumbass salesperson who doesn't know anything. ;)

Sounds a little ominous, but then has anyone noticed any changes to shipping dates?

Edit: Could have just been a faulty batch!

meh. I hope this isn't the first of widespread problems that plagues Apple as they switch to Intel. I really am drooling over the new Intel based Macs, but this is potentially the sort of Rev. A problem that truly scares me off of the first batch of Intel Macs...

Wasn't there issues that some boxes were marked 256 VRAM, but were really just 128 machines? Seems like to me instead of thinking there is a physical problem with the machines that Apple might just be worried more of these are really just 128, so they're going to investigate before selling anymore?

Interesting. It almost sounds as if we're going to see a lot of the initial Intel machines in the refurbished section.

Sometimes they get new products in and have to check them into inventory before they sell them though normally that doesn't take long. That's very odd, my guess would be that it's unique to the store though unless someone can say otherwise.

I'm sure we would have heard somthing by now. The line issue on the powerbook 15"hi res, was reported almost straight away..

The fact that no-one on this forum has posted any problems like this speaks with more volume than the 1 guy in a store somewhere with questionable 'knowledge'..

Rev A argument is spurious at best... Any way that's what Apple Care is for, regardless of Rev of product...

Yep, quite true - the more I think of it, this appears to be some sort of isolated incident. Although I'm curious to find out the details behind it regardless.

There was someone on the forum who posted that he went to buy a 256VRAM version at an applestore and when they tested it, it was only 128..

Maybe that's the balls up... A shipment of wrongly labelled mac's...

That's exactly what it is. They're only holding those particular models (20" w/256MB VRAM) in the back because the boxes were mislabeled. The standard 17" & 20" models are still selling as usual, they certainly haven't been "suspended."

Just to clarify...Apple Retail employees do NOT work on commission...not a single one...

I see you read my thread on this matter ;)

That whole thing wasn't fun for anyone that day. Yes I did call Apple and file a complaint about it, I would hope those that had this happen would do the same.
But hey it all worked out in the end, just took a bit more time to get one :)
And as to what happened, wrong label on the side of the boxes...part #'s MA and SERIAL #'s that start with W860.........I have 4 reciepts in front of me from each box, each one returned, less the DOA unit.
It's not a lot but a "real" number is still in question by Apple. I would think whatever was shipped that day to the Apple stores, which really wouldn't be more than 50-75 as the Buffalo, NY store got 25 in and all were 128 VRAM.

Sorry, yes, you're quite correct - I shouldn't have used that word, I simply meant he was screwing himself out of a sale in general. Nonetheless, we now seem to know what the problem is, so hopefully there aren't too many of these instances popping up to inconvenience Mac buyers.

Could be a problem with the POS...

And by 'POS', I mean 'Point Of Sale' system, really! :p

Right after MW, I went into a local Apple Store to get the new iPod remote/FM receiver. They had plenty in stock, but couldn't sell me any because they were ringing up wrong. ($29 instead of $49.) And apparently there was no manual override system, they had to wait for Apple corporate to fix it. This could be a similar situation, where there's nothing wrong with the product, just something wrong with their (store's) computers.

I had the problem with purchasing a 20" Core Duo and paying for the upgraded video card only to find out I had a 128Mb card.

Apple refunded me the cost of the VRAM upgrade immediately.

Well I would rest much easier and purchase one much sooner if it is just a case of mislabeled boxes and nothing more. That is embarrassing, but nothing catestrophic. Maybe I will buy one afterall!:D
