Okay, so, I am a Windows user, eagerly anticipating this new macbook air refresh, in which I'm going to make the switch to OSX and buy the 13".
And I've been stalking these forums anxiously for when it may come out, i.e. whether to buy this current 2010 MBA or wait till the 2011 MBA.

And I was thinking, we could play a game - With the prize being the honor.

So here are the rules:
We all pick 3 specific dates (I'd go with some in this summer due to all the rumors).
When the MBA is released we check to see whomever got closer, and that guy is one god damn to-be-respected oracle.

I'll start off myself by guessing on:

28th of may - cause that could be cool.
15th of june - cause that could be cool.
16th of juli - cause that could go to be around the same time as lion perhaps?

I tend to say late June/first week of July.
Don't think they will do anything until after WWDC but you might hear something mentioned about it in passing at WWDC.
I would be pleasantly suprised if they released the new MBA before or during WWDC but I highly doubt it.
My funds are set aside and waiting for the release announcement however whenever it comes.
:)

How long do you think you might need to wait to get an MBA and Lion (without paying for the latter)? Anyone? :p

I wonder the same, thinking lion comes out in july, and then it would be on by default on all computers bought after that date, I think? - Got no clue though, I don't know what they have done the other times they have updated their os.

I doubt theyll make you pay to upgrade to Lion if its released before lion is, seems very unlikly as it would definitly upset a lot of people. I could see them releasing the MBA along with Lion or a few days later.

I don't see them releasing them before Lion. It's too much of a hassle to arrange for free upgrades to Lion for all those people who buy the newly announced MBA. Other customers who buy a Mac within a month of Lion's release will get a free upgrade. There will probably be a hard date where anybody who bought a Mac after this date is eligible for an upgrade, and everyone else is out of luck. It has happened before!

If they do, they'll start selling MBAs in advance, but inform all customers that customers will start receiving the MBAs at around the time of Lion's official release.

I don't think it will be released before the end of back to school promotion. So, assuming that will end somewhere at the beginning of September, my dates will be:

13th September
4th October
8th November

I'd go more for the latter date than the earlier ones.

I am curious why you think this. As I am somebody planning on getting the MBA refresh this summer (before school), I wonder why people think that it will be later than every other website and article says?

Not trying to be rude, I am just wondering

Thanks,
Swayne

Isn't it not going to have hardware graphic acceleration? The smart money will be on the refurbed old ones then.

I really only care about

When they ship.

Then you and I are different, mate, I want to see the specs it will have, I want to read about it when it gets out, I want to hear all those blown out of proportions marketing terms making the MBA 2011 sound like the best thing ever created by man, I want to dream about receiving it in my mail.

There's something about Apple and Tuesdays right?

Ruling out a release this month because of the preparations of WWDC (as much as I want it to), that leaves

14 June
21 June
28 June

Since 7 June is WWDC and I think, going by the WWDC "App poster", I think is going to me more software based than hardware based.

Now, 14th June is blood donor day, 21st is skateboarding day and 28th is columnists day, I think I will go for 28th June or July, since by then the hype from WWDC will have decreased a little and Apple can re-hype products again.

Typically once Apple announces the release date for an OS all computers sold from that date on will be eligible to get a free copy of the new OS.

In 2007 I bought a MBP and it had the new OS disk dropped in the box but not installed on the computer. I bought it at B&H right after the upgrade. I've also seen the new OS offered at a reduced rate for people who bought the computers maybe in the last 6 months.

Don't worry about rudeness! This is only a game. As all, I don't have any clue. But, my reasoning is, it took Apple about two years to update rev C, which had many flaws such as the breakable hinges, overheating, and so on, with this new model, last autumn. So I don't think they will be releasing a further update earlier than one year, almost, from its release. Also, as far as I'm concerned, the current model(s) sell fine enough). They just updated iMacs, and they are probably more focused now on iOS such as iPhone, and on Lion. I think next macs will arrive after Lion release. I don't know when that will be, but say somewhere July? I think Apple will refresh iPods right after the end of the back to school, beginning of September, and macs thereafter.
I'd like to buy a MBA, also. September-October will be fine for me.
