There's a reason why apple doesn't pre announce hardware updates. It would kill existing sales. As you stated, you would have held off on purchasing.

Now your iMac is an excellent computer and you have a choice.
1. Sell it at a loss but then use what proceeds you do get to fund the purchase of a new computer.

2. Be content realizing that the computing industry is about churning out new hardware all the time and the you cannot fall victim to the grass is always greener mentality. Be content and enjoy your machine

Ever the positive one... I will take option 2 please!

As previously stated.. I am happy with my items.

I believe the statement is... ***** HAPPENS!!!!

I was with you until this point. May your feet get stuck in mud and a rottweiler bite your arse... with no school bus ride home!

Ha Ha... this did make me chuckle

Thank you for putting a bigger smile on my face )

HOW SO?

MOST product maufacturers advise they are launching new products, NOT leave it to rumour channels such as this forum.

I specifically discussed my needs with the 'sales expert' - how they can deny any knowledge of a new product being released is ridiculous as they have to sell the bloody product the minute its on the shop floor!

I believe I have a right to be advised if there is a new product about to hit the shelves which will enable me to make my purchase accurately.

And this is where I lost all sympathy for you also.

iMacs are refreshed yearly (heck, almost every Apple product line is refreshed yearly). You needed a computer in March. You bought the best machine for your needs at that time. Unless your needs have changed, your machine is no less capable. You have a right to do you homework. The internet is a resource that would have given you info that there would be a mid-year iMac update. Your arguments are akin to someone who buys a 2010 car in Spetember 2010, only to find out the 2011 are released in December.

Grow up. A pox on your iMac. May it die 366 days after your purchase without AppleCare coverage.

Yeah, I know the feeling, it sucks. Hopefully you'll get the exchange. You know to check first now, at least it won't happen again.

I do disagree with you though in that you should be advised prior that a new model is coming out. I don't know of any company that does that. The best we've got are the rumours in the forum, funnily enough they're pretty accurate.

Cheers

I get really cross when I see posts like this.....

I manage an UK Apple premium reseller store and it grinds my gears when people believe that Apple 'inform us' of new machines on the way. Even the UK Apple stores are kept in the dark (I have quite a few friends that work in their stores). Since August 2008 we have not been 'informed' of upcoming updates to models and even then we were never told what was happening, just something would. An example of this is that 4 weeks before the original iMacs (21.5" & 27"s) launched Apple allowed my company to purchase £250,000 worth of the older 20" and 24" models.

99% of staff that work for Apple related or in Apple stores are Apple fans and would be just as p***ed if we bought an older model.

How do we get around this???? We follow advise from other users and websites like MacRumors. By doing this I have never got in to the situation of the original poster - NOT by inside information.

My experience in my store is to advise the customer that there are rumors of new models on the way - but we emphasize "rumors". We then recommend the best current model for their needs / use and then its up to YOU the customer to make the choice of waiting for the upcoming rumors to become reality or make a purchase there and then.

We were waiting for the Apple store to update yesterday to find out the models and didn't find out till 13:30 BST.

And before anyone says so how do you buy stock - we cant - thats why Apple sends CPU's DIRECT to our stores and then we have to order once the models are confirmed.

I believe the statement is... ***** HAPPENS!!!!

Here's probably one reason why apple is so secretive.

Back in the early days of the computer industry. There was a company called Osborne which was a pioneer in the portable computer sector
osborne1.jpg

The fatal mistake Osborne made was while the Osborne 1 was wildly popular, he talked up the next version, saying how great that was going to be. People stopped buying the Osborne 1 as they waited for the next version which was delayed for a variety of reasons and his company went bankrupt because he had no new machine and no one wanted the older one because of his hype.

I'm not saying apple's business will fail because of the "Osborne effect" but clearly they work hard at not affecting their current sales.

Edit: There are some advantages for being an old fart. I remember the good old days, like when Adam Osborne introduced this puppy :D

y'know, I sympathise, I really do.

However, whatever you buy is going to be out of date in a few months. I find the best approach is not to care :D

Seriously, I buy a new machine when I need it - not necessarily when a new model arrives. More often than not, if a new model does co-incide with my own timing I then end up buying the older version at a discount on the basis that in a couple of years, it's not going to make any difference which I buy - they're both going to be way out of date ;)

Yup - I'm the guy that bought TWO iPad1s just before the iPad2 came out. Am I bothered about it? Not really...

Oh, and Maflynn: I agree about the benefits of being an old fart. I actually OWNED an Osborne 1 :D

Just wondered if anyone could advise if Apple can change my mac?

I converted from PC to Mac and bought a "new" 27" i7 and its now already out of date!!!

Anyone got any ideas?

Purchased a mac book pro last week... think that may be going back!

Next time do your research. Mac Rumors has a very good buyer's guide, for example. Plus there is always speculation here and elsewhere based on Intel's roadmap.

But no crying over spilt milk. Your iMac is hardly "obsolete." I can't think of any major S/W that won't run mighty on your machine. However, if you are concerned about not having TB then sell your machine on eBay or Craigslist ASAP. You should get a decent price -- may be a 2-3 hundred or so less than what you paid. Take that $ and buy your new TB enhanced model. It's a cheap upgrade if you are only out $300.

Final Thoughts?!

WOW... such hostility amongst some of the less mature users of the forum... I wasnt expecting that!

OK, so acceptance... schoolboy errors made, opportunities missed etc. BUT... funny how those throwing mud and wishing ill on my Mac dying all missed how happy I STILL AM with my purchases!!!!

Incidentally I DO have Apple care for both my products.

Thank you to all who responded. I appreciate the feedback. I just didnt expect to be abused in such a way.

We are all allowed our perception and opinion. My perception has changed somewhat based on the positive remarks made, thank you.

Dude, you are very very wrong with that statement. A large number of brands keep the release of new products secret until the last moment. It creates hype and excitment (this site being in existance shows it works). I think you should just be happy with what you have, as 6 weeks is a long time - and in no way are Apple being unfair by not upgrading you.

Also, i have a friend who works for Apple, and the only information he has about upcoming product releases are from here! Apple keep it hush hush, but it is commonplace in retail businesses with a following like Apple. In regards to the staff having to sell it, with little knowledge.... it is mainly a CPU, GPU, Thunderbol upgrade - so pretty simple for them to sell

Some of the negative comes as a result of a few things. First, your iMac is no less awesome than it was when you bought it in March. I would enjoy it as you have been, since March. Second, there is a buying guide. If you firmly believe you need to be informed, the buying guide is useful a fair amount of the time. Third, it just seems as though you feeling "gutted" is a melodramatic and equally immature response to a problem that is not really a "problem" at all. Devastation in say Japan and some southern states in the US, now that's a problem. Your iMac being awesome when you bought it in March, being enjoyed until yesterday, and the release of new ones is not a problem nor is it something that would make me feel "gutted".

I know, I played the natural disaster card, but somehow things are put into perspective when you look around you and realize that there are real problems in this world. If my only problem was that my iMac that I bought in March was just updated yesterday, I would jump for joy.

Also, if you return your MBP, your problem-free MBP, because you're afraid of technology advancing then you need to sell your iMac and buy a moleskin and a nice pen. Frankly, technology isn't for you if you're living with such fear of refreshes.

I think the issue most people have is that at the time you purchased the iMac, you agreed to the terms of the sale and deemed it acceptable to buy the current model for however much you purchased it for. No one put a gun to your head and told you to buy it. It was you who walked into the store and decided to make the purchase.

Now that you have buyer's remorse for a product well past the purchase date, it should be the retailer that eats up the cost of you using the product for the past 2 months? What are they supposed to do with that model now? Sell it as brand new? It doesn't work that way. Is it fair? Maybe not. But like I said, at the time you deemed that the product you were purchasing was a fair value for the price, and you were the one that handed over the cash to Apple.

How are they to blame for this? And why would they be responsible for fixing this?

BUT... funny how those throwing mud and wishing ill on my Mac dying all missed how happy I STILL AM with my purchases!!!!
I think there's a reason for that.

You've had the benefit of time. You started this thread a few hours ago, and have time between replies. You're in a different state of mind.

Others are just now finding this thread, and reading it all in one go.

I think the tone that you set in your OP and first few replies vibrates so negatively with some that they're going to reply to it (i.e. "throw mud"), regardless of the fact that you changed your tone later on in the thread.

It's irritating to some here that a consumer that didn't spend the time to do basic research before purchasing (i.e. if you google the two words "iMac update", MacRumor's Buyer's Guide is almost always in the top three results) will take the time (when upset) to find the biggest Mac forums around, create an account, navigate through the forum structure to start a new thread explaining about how unhappy they are about their purchase. And you threw in the added bonus of threatening to return your MacBook Pro if Apple doesn't let you return your iMac for a new one.

Anywho, I'm glad that you're happy with your iMac, and personally, I would just ignore any future mud being slung.

Well I think I am in my place on this one!

You are all right about the kit being fantastic... as my first post in the forum I didnt realise (or think) about the anger/frustration/disappointment my comments may have made in the forum... I apologize for all that.

I DO thank you all for the feedback. I DO have excellent kit and I AM very fortunate.

To add to that ... the sun is continuing to shine in the UK )

Thanks again all and hope no lasting damage done!

Is it true the iPad 3 is due out in August (JOKE!)

Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?

Dude, this is a fickle forum. Don't think on it. There have been a lot bigger and more disturbing incidences of Apple entitlement anger than this.

Enjoy your iMac.

I promise we don't always bite! I sincerely apologize about the pox comment and all that came after it. Please don't judge the MacRumors community on your first interaction with us.

This happened to me also just after buying my last generation non-unibody MBP. A couple of weeks later, the unibody model was out (huge update)...I was pis%?# !!

Got over it and my MBP was (and still is, as my main computer) a wonderful machine...though after all these year I really need a new computer for the heavy lifting.

My point being : you have a great machine, this update was nice but not groundbreaking, you computer will last for year and you will love it, it's not worth the hassle of trying to get apple to replace it...and I could go on !

Enjoy your powerful iMac !!:D

Frye? Frye? Frye?

Tough lesson learned, dude. You won't do it again, right...?!

your stupid if you get the new one, its only a slight update. Just chill man, enjoy your new mac.

You are everything that is wrong with consumers.

No, everything wrong with *people* these days.

F&*$%)! sense of "entitlement" -- I did NOTHING but Im "entitled" to get the best/better/more whatever with no effort at all.

<a little sarcasm> I think you should sue. Sue Apple, sue MacRumors, and anyone else hanging around. A good lawyer could get you a new Mac plus a million dollars for the "pain and suffering and ridicule from your friends and MRF posters" for not reading the buyers guide a seeing the warning of "do not buy". Surely everyone is laughing at you and your slow a$$ outdated iMac. <but only a little sarcasm>

Look on the bright side, you would be upgrading your imac one generation sooner than the newly released one. :D:D That is if you are in a cycle
