I think this is one you'll have to chalk up to experience. It seems to me that you had only the vaguest of arrangements with this guy - you should learn a lesson from this. On the other hand he may find a way to get you some of your money back. Good luck.

BTW: Nit-pick about language
Using Gyp as a synonym for cheat or steal is a slur against Romany people (Gypsies) the same way as saying "that guy jewed me down on the price" is a slur against Jews.
gyp 1 |jip| informal verb ( gypped, gypping) [ trans. ] cheat or swindle (someone) : that's salesmanship, you have to gyp people into buying stuff they don't like. noun (also gip) an act of cheating; a swindle.

^straight outta Dictionary lol^

Just wanted to say thanks to everybody that responded so far.

Isn't the thug with bat approach bad? Couldn't he call the cops and get my thug arrested? Or can he like physically drag the guy to an ATM and get him to withdraw cash? Kind of like Rocky, huh?

Get a grip on reality - OF COURSE it is bad to physically assault someone, in any way including coercing them to take money from an ATM- why do you even have to ask? This isn't a TV show where the ends justify the means if you can get away with it.

BTW: Being in the dictionary doesn't mean the word is not a slur.

"gyp also gip Pronunciation (jp) Slang
tr.v. gypped also gipped, gyp·ping also gip·ping, gyps also gips
To deprive (another) of something by fraud; cheat or swindle.
n.
1. A fraud or swindle.
2. One who defrauds; a swindler.
[Probably short for Gypsy.]"

"Random House Historical Dictionary of American Slang, Volume 1, A-G" by J.E. Lighter, Random House, New York, 1994: GYP or GIP v. 1.a. to cheat; defraud; charge exorbitantly - sometimes considered offensive to the Roma (Gypsies). Now colloq. b. to disappoint. 2. to steal, filch.

If you were involved in buying crap that fell off the truck or slid out the back door, the money is gone -- no way you can collect on it, since illegal schemes are a no-no and tossed out of court.

If the guy you did give the money to was trafficking in stolen merchandise, and you were in his place. Would you call the cops to say, he beat me up took the money back?

Look at all the times the victim has gone to jail when he says, "he stole my drugs." or ... He beat me up and took back the iPod I stole from him.

Street justice works when the people are involved in criminal acts themselves, and will go to jail when they have to explain where the debt came from.

Just have to know how the deal took place. Sort of odd the way things took place, if it was legit -- your friend could still get the stuff from the original paintball place that this guy worked at. But it doesn't sound like the deal was too legitimate to begin with.

---

Call it a lesson learned if you don't get paid.

A lot of times these cut rate deals are scams anyhow, especially if you don't walk away with the stuff immediately.

So you're saying that the stories that if I really believe in myself, even though I am incredibly unhygienic and socially inept, I can get the the captain of the cheerleading squad to dump the captain of the football team and go with me to prom are lies? You've broken my little heart.

On a side note, while gyp is about as clear a slur as you can get and it is bad to generalize, it's tough to feel bad after almost getting pick-pocketed twice and having them try to swindle you on a weekly basis (lots o' Gypsies in Chile)
