Anybody unclear on this?

This is interesting news, since I'm on T-Mobile (though I'm not interested in buying an iPhone).

My take is that the DMCA exemption makes it very unlikely that you'll get in trouble for unlocking an iPhone for personal use. Which is good, because I dislike the concept of locked phones.

More important is whether Apple attempts to break the hack or not, and whether the hackers can stay ahead of Apple and keep the iPhone unlocked.

Oh, and apropos the original topic - throwing around the term "sellout" in the world's most capitalist society is pretty pointless - if you had the chance to "keep it real" or make a fat pile O' cash you'd be "selling out" too...although only an idiot would by the "world's second unlocked iPhone". What, do they think it will end up in the Smithsonian or something?

Holy crap... the guy traded the unlocked iPhone for a Nissan 350Z and a 3 8GB iPhone!....

All I have to say is, what an idiot! With that money that guy just shelled out to get an unlocked iPhone, he could've subscribed to AT&T for a couple years and payed off a ETF with his current company.

I guess I shouldnt be too surprised since us dumb Americans have terrible spending habits. Anyone still remember the EMPTY soda can that was sold on ebay for a couple hundred, that supposedly had a spirit inside?

SELLOUT!

He might have been a "hacker" initially, but now that he is trying to get notoriety, he can no longer consider himself as a "hacker".

A "hacker" is someone who tries to do something because he is told it "can't be done". Once done, a "hacker" will show friends it can be done, and in some cases merely throw it away. Since he is obviously trying to get money for his underhanded operations, he has left the world of "hackers".

Best thing you can call him now is "lawyer"!

So Woz is a lawyer?

I love how people define and put labels on things :p

I agree.

Sort of like an "alcoholic".

If you think about it, an "alcoholic" doesn't drink. Until you admit you have a drinking problem, you are a 'drunk". Once you admit you have a drinking problem and are trying to quit, you are an "alcoholic".

What a great world we live in!

Sure, someone who drinks too much isn't an alcoholic.

I'm sure that 8000 page (stupid lawyers) activation document we all agreed to didn't mention a thing about iphone hacking being frowned upon. Of course, I didn't read it, so I'm ok. :)

Doesnt seem like it now since AT&T is threatening to take legal action for "copyright infringement and illegal software dissemination."

You can sue over anything, it doesn't mean that they will win, AT&T is just hoping that he will not sell it because he is afraid, but if they actually sue him then they will most likely lose the lawsuit.

He's a 17 year old kid, who is going to college. They'll let him slide and I don't see him selling a ton of these because the hardware hack is difficult. It involves scraping away a trace without breaking it, which is like a human hair.

Another group is developing a software hack, and they are the ones who would try to make money and need to stay low.

So why is the kid being interviewed? Because he's in the USA, the others are in Russia. Plus he's only 17.
