On which system?

MacBook Pro and iMac Intel will both run the same FPS wise as they have the same specs for graphic cards and processor.

The 17" macbook pro is something I will consider next. I'll be waiting for the intel upgrade tho.

yes, but Mr. Bimboles could have more/less ram, the 256 mb X1600, he could be on a 2.16 macbook... Im gathering intel (no pun intended) on which system is the best pricewise and performance wise to run BF2. Its looking like the 2.0 macbook with 2 gb RAM is the best for now...

Your not going to see much performance on hl2 or bf2 with a 256mb x1600 card over a 128mb.

Do you then suggest that i get the 1.83 with 2gb RAM? would it be that much different from the 2.0/2gb?

Let me get this right: Assume I want to play HL2 on the Stock 17" iMac and the Stock 20" iMac (both with max RAM of course). Will I get similar framerates? So the only real difference would be the resolution?

I have an external 20" display (Dell 2005FPW) anyway for movies and stuff and I work with extended desktop all the time anyway.

You won't get the same frame rates it takes more graphics power to run games at higher resolutions. If you run them both at the same res they will be close to indentical tho.

Here is the difference in a 128mb vs 256mb

Not where I would have it. I have a mini fan on my desk, a box fan on my floor and a celling fan, and my windows are always open. Cooling isnt a problem for me. :D

Your windows are open? Close all your windows if you need performance! :D :p
I have to use a cooling pad for my PC laptop here because the GPU is just on top of the hard drive. And the HDD powers off when it's above 60 and the GPU freezes very fast too (ATI recovery stuff). So doing heavy stuff for the HDD and/or the GPU will freeze/crash/burn the whole system. That's why I'm so concerned about heat.

I guess it's better to have a desktop for gaming then. It's cheaper anyway and the screen is better suited. Maybe I'll get an iMac now and a small MacBook (Pro) when Merom is out.

Thx a lot. Just came back from my local Apple reseller. The Macbook Pro is... well the one they had there was damn hot on the bottom too (even without battery) and it was idling so using it in trains or planes would be painful I guess. And the case had some gaps etc... I call it a beta ^^

I compared the 20" and the 17" and think I'll go for the stock 17" and max out the RAM. And thanks to truz I know the small GPU (128 MB RAM) won't make too much of a difference. :)

EDIT: Just got a 17" iMac for less than 1000 EUR on eBay ;)

I Told you ebay is the best place for purchasing many things and one of them are apple products. I always look on ebay, amazon and buy.com before making my purchase. I want to save money and one of them is always cheaper (buy.com is great when using coupons).

Was the 17" unit used or new and I take it, it's an Intel iMac right?

a lil off topic...But how much is max memory you can throw in an iMac? 2x 1Gb? considering there are no 2Gb DDR2 667Mhz sticks in the market?

And BTW, congrats on the purchase :) i have the same one and love it! :p

It's brand new, sealed package and full guarantee.
And yes, it's the stock 17" intel iMac. I will add it to my sig as soon as I recieve it.

@ntrsfrml (how do you pronounce that anyway?)
I guess the maximum RAM is 2 GB (two 1 GB sticks) but I'm not sure what the real limit is. If anyone knows, please tell. The Apple sites say "supports up to 2GB" but that may be because you can't buy 2GB sticks for now. 2GB sticks are already in production but are way too expensive for mere mortals. In a year or so they should be affordable.

EDIT: I read somewhere you can also use PC4200 533 Mhz RAM instead of the 667 without loosing speed. Dunno if it's true though...

Try running it @ Native reso i.e. 1440x900.. Won't you see a major frame drop.. I can play 1440x900, all high settings, 4xAA with 512Mb ram only :)

Can't run HL2.

Everything's updated and all. But when I try to start HL2, I only get the blurry loading screen. At the moment where the main menu should show up, I get back to the windows desktop without an error. :-(

Goto Start -> Run -> type "winver"

Make sure you have SP2 and all apple's drivers installed.

Guess it was the drivers. The slipstream stuff didn't work (the CD would not boot) so I got a copy of XP SP2 from a famous torrent site. Worked fine for installing, but I guess there was some conflict with the Mac drivers (I had no sound too).

I got a retail CD and a new Serial now. Beeing a CS Student is cool, I get this stuff for free. I might sell XP CDs with keys on the street ;)

I'm installing from the new CD right now. I'll post if I suceed.

EDIT: Works fine now. :)
