First the settings,
1440x900 native
everything else MAXIMUM, except 0 Anti Aliasing (15" screen doesn't need it)

The pics have the FPS in the bottom right, check it out! (This is Episode 2!) {Vsync is on, aka nothing over 60 FPS}

On portal I'm running 1680x1040 (native) with i7 and 330M with everything maxed. 0 AA, 0 AF, no vsync though. Vysnc absolutely kills my fps from about 50 to 30.

That would be Apple. Apple needs to... They're in charge of drivers fo OS X.

Well I know Apple loves to be in complete control of everything but they need to let nVidia and ATi take the reins and release the drivers more often. They seem to be doing a good job on the Windows side, i don't see why Apple shouldn't let them do the same thing. Apple can do the same driver certification process like MS to ensure quality over quantity.

That is what vsync does!
It limits the fps to 30 fps to get a better image when you look around.
- Or at 60 fps, if you graphics card can handle it.

Well the graphics were updated to be better than the 2004 release.

They were updated slightly to match the 2007 engine, it doesn't even support HDR and people are amazed their brand spanking new 2010 macs can run it. We're supposed to be the elite us Mac users!

Well my 07 MBP with 128mb 8600 is able to run it @ native res @ ~40-100fps w/ settings on high

While I agree that it's kinda silly to be amazed at HL2's good performance on 2010 Macs, HDR is on by default according to rbarris.

Today is a momentous occasion. HL2 has come to mac, natively.

On my i5 GT 330m 15", I decided to give it a shot. Valve just put out an update, to improve the graphics even in the original, so I wasn't sure how well it would run.

Maybe you all ready know this but for future reference, why not put your file links in a format that does not require logging in? Are they photos or video? If photos, you can look on them at photobucket with no login and I don't see a password in your post.

Actually, vertical sync as the name implies syncs the framerate to your vertical refresh which is typically 60Hz on an LCD.

It seems to hurt performance quite a lot on OSX though, so better leave it off. Better with some tearing than low fps.

He is partially correct.

if your computer is rendering more than 60fps, vsync locks the game to 60fps to match the 60hz refresh rate.

If your computer is rendering LESS THAN 60fps (even if its 59fps) then the game locks to 30fps and draws each frame twice to sync to the 60hz refresh rate of the display.

the main reason to use vsync is to eliminate screen tearing when the camera quickly pans left or right. it should only be used if you know your computer can render >= 60 fps. Otherwise it drops you down to 30fps. And if your computer is not good enough to even render 30fps, well then vsync isnt even an issue ;)
