Hmm. The games are sold in US dollars here, and from what I can tell they're the same prices as in the US. I wonder whether there's a way to get US pricing from the UK.

Pricing is different. Only way to get US pricing is to pay someone in the US, to gift you the game.

they have to charge you VAT in the UK... there is no VAT in the US. They have to raise the price a bit to cover higher operating costs, plus higher taxes.

Finally worked, downloading HL 2 files now. Slowly, but downloading. :)

Check that your location is correct in the preferences. Mine defaulted to a foreign country even though there's an option for NZ. I believe that the setting influences where it will download from.

LOL - after all that hassle, I clicked the play button and my current iMac does not meet the requirements. I have a GeForce 7600GT and it requires Geforce 8 or better. Oh well I should get my new iMac next week. :D

I'm upgrading my first gen 24" iMac to a 27" and thought I'd try to play some games. I've wanted to play half life 2 for a while but I'm confused as to how it works. I don't see any "Half Life 2 for OS X" on Amazon, but I've seen where people are playing it on their Macs. Do you have to use this so-called "Steam" or does it install natively?

I think this has been resolved in this thread all ready, but I'll specifically say, there is no "HL2 for OSX" for purchase in disk form. Under the MacOS, all versions of Half life should be purchased through Steam online.

And PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEEEEEEEEEEEASE play Portal! I promise, you'll love it!

+99!

What an awesome concept. Portal 2 may offer collaborative play, I think. Another fun and perplexing aspect to the conept. :D

That's not correct. If you buy a legitimate copy of Half Life 2 from anywhere it'll come with a Steam code that you need to use in order to play the game. Entering that code into your Steam client will get you the ability to download it and play on any computer you like, Mac or Windows. I got my boxed copy of HL2 when it first came out for Windows. When Steam for Mac came out the Mac version was added to my account for free. Same with every other recent Valve game bar Alien Swarm.

No, he's right. You can't go to a store and buy a Half-Life 2 disk that will install under OS X. Of course you'll get a code, but you still have to download it.

Really great game by the way, played it (and finnished it) on my macbook pro as a kind of benchmark test to see how it worked, but ended up loving it and kept playing :D
