You are exactly right. Now let's see if Apple can get people to pay $600 for a phone (..a phone that's not a smartphone)
As someone else has already stated, this isn't a keystone markup. Keystone is when the retailer takes their cost of goods sold and doubles that cost to get the retail price. Pretty common in clothing stores for example. So for this to be a keystone price, you'd be saying that Apple is charging Best Buy for only the cost of the components. Obviously false. Apple is going to charge $450 or something (wholesale) for the $500 phone and retailers will be lucky to get 10% margins on it, like most other electronics.
If it's that unreasonable, build your own. Develop all the software, technology, build all the hardware, save yourself a bundle.
I personally prefer to buy my stuff from Apple because I don't really know how to make MacBooks, iPods, iMacs and the like - Apple knows how to make this stuff at a price I deem reasonable, because I can't make that stuff myself. But if you can, more power to you.

I been using Apple since 1996 FWIW.... and I dont need to have my appreciation of Apple products validated by any of you.
Forums are voluntary mediums of commentary. Im on alot of forums and to have a back and forth discussion about really anything and to have this happen is uncool. Go ahead and get revision A of your iPhone. I choose to wait on all my Apple product anyways.
I'm not, and for what is worth I haven't paid for cell phone service from Cingular in 3 years a I was a high profile professional athlete, and Cingular has promo'd me free unlimited service since. Enjoy your Cingular commitment + new phones. Equate those costs and enjoy. If anyone should get one, and it make money sense it would be me.
