nice suggestion..... any other helpful ones???
Yes. Find and tell me what the exact properties a movie has to have to play on the iPad. I don't have one. My Archos plays DVD VOB files ripped right from the disk.

I'll guess: H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format.

Pick one of the above. The 640 x 480/30 frames .mp4 option is iPhone/iPod Touch compatible. I use 123Movies2iPod, and that video setting for my Touch. It should work on the iPod. Pinnacle makes a device that will convert any analog video coming down an RCA cable into one that will play on an iPhone/Touch. Play the DVD on a real DVD player, and use the included A/V output to pump it through the Pinnacle.

you are missing the point. handbrake DOES work fine in win 7.

sometimes it does but sometimes it doesn't. my best friend could never get HB to work on his Window machines either. he use to have me rip his movies to iphone format when I was running a Mac which I use HB flawlessly on.

I have always encoded all my videos for anything with Handbrake.

I rip my DVD first with RipIt to the HDD and then encode for my XBOX360 play back or settings for iPhone.

I have been downloading a lot of m2ts files in 1080p format for my PS3 and Handbrake converts them very well down to the size I need for the iPad @ 1024x* using a bitrate of 2000kpbs on video and 160kpbs on audio. They look amazing I must say and I am very happy with the quality and file size turn out from these.

Where do you make these changes to the settings?

I am finding that even 2500kbps leaves a lot to be desired in terms of video quality for a video of 1024x576... much macro blocks and loss of detail..

I use handbrake w/ AppleTV preset but lower to 1800mbps. Works a charm for me.

Sorry - I know how to produce the files but can't copy them to the iPad. I used to drag them onto the MUSIC section but now when I do nothing happens... how do I actually get them onto the iPad?

1) Look here for more details on what Handbrake converted videos the iPad will play.

2) Look here for more information on fixing Handbrake Windows issues.

I currently have Superbad playing on my iPad right now in my office. This will help my days go by even faster now on a larger screen than my iPhone.

I'd save the storage space and use 1024 instead of 1280.
