So I'm clear, this means that if you rip something and pick both audio encodes, it means when you move it from the iTunes library to a capable device (iPod/Touch, iPhone) that you'll get stereo sound as well as the down rezed video (as done by iTunes), plus the 5.1 audio in ATV?

Exactly. To paraphrase from the handbrake forums: "One format to rule them all, one encoder to bind them, ..." :)

iTunes does not down-res files when copying them to iPods. They get transferred at full res, but are scaled down on the device itself.

But yes you have the right idea that when played by the Apple Tv 5.1 will play, but when on the iPods, AAC will play. Video is the same.

I am really excited for everything that is coming in Handbrake! Encoding a movie once that will work on both my Apple TV and iPhone at full res will be awesome.

I am NOT excited to re-encode all of my movies. Ah, but such is life when you want ultimate functionality! Good work Handbrake team, and Apple for finally stepping up to the plate in this area.

New Handbrake is just what I've been waiting for. FYI for anyone compiling the latest dev build, you need XCode 3 and make failed to build for me, had to use ./jam

Yea make hasn't worked in the build in a while.

I had all sorts of trouble trying to use Make to build but this morning on a clean download it worked fine with Xcode 3. (By The Way what is ./jam?)

As to the app it worked a treat for me.

Slapped in a DVD and chose the setting for AppleTV and then changed the encoding dropdown to select h.264+AAC+AC3.

It took slightly longer to encode than the last public release of Handbrake - c75fps compared to c100fps.

Resulting file was an m4v (mp4) file with a h.264 video track, a DPLII AAC track and an AC3 track.

I tagged it without any problem in MetaX including coverart, rating and descriptions then loaded it into iTunes.

AppleTV in the living room played it perfectly with full AC3 passthrough to the Amp that correctly identified it as Dolby Digital 5.1 (and the sound was fantastic!!).

AppleTV in the family room also played it perfectly and picked up the DPLII track through the TV.

I rip[ separately for my ipod.

So all in all I am one very happy bunny even tho I now gotta rerip all my DVD's.......

I can't emphasize enough how bad I want to use the upcoming 0.9.2 as the team have done a great job with the MP4 -> AAC ->AC3 problem. I'm glad they did it the proper way and not just released a quick fix as VH did with the .mov container.

Patiently waiting for the final build now :D

This is really good news, but I hate I am going to have re-encode everything now. Oh well. I wanted to do an iPod version (480x320) of everything anyways, so it's a good time to do that.

I'm also going to use this an a chance to retest MPEG4 vs h264. I did a big round of subjective testing when I started encoding all my DVDs and ended up with h264. However, the speed difference between h264 and MPEG4 is so great and hard disks are getting so cheap that I think I'm going to try the test over at higher bitrates where MPEG4 might fair better.

Thanks for the heads up about HB, though!

I reencoded Transformers last night with DPLII + AC3 and it worked perfectly. New file size was 3.09GB as compared to 2.67 with DPLII only. It streamed perfectly and automatically passed the 5.1 to my receiver. I had 85fps avg on first pass and 38fps avg on second which I think was the same as 9.1. It all worked without a glitch so I'd guess public release is soon.

What computer are you using?

Weird issue with the last build of Handbrake.

Works a dream with Apple TV setting and 5.1 sound but having an odd quirk when I import into iTunes.

The movie is encoded at the correct size with anamorphic settings. It plays in quicktime perfectly at the correct resolution (in this case 998 x 426). No problems.

However when I then import it into iTunes it shows at a different resolution? The movie becomes stretched again (as if iTunes is applying it's own anamorphic adjustment) to a size of 1419 x 426.

It isn't changing any resolution on the file - the same source file played in quicktime is still at 998 x 426 and a get info shows it as 998 x 426. But iTunes resolutely reports that it is 1419 x 426.

Not a problem for the Apple TV that scales it back to 720p but whilst I don;t watch too many movies on the computer it would be better to be the right resolution!

Wasn't a problem with 0.9.1 so must be something in the current version causing the problem.

Anybody else getting this?

Fixed this morning. Remember, there are reasons yet there isnt a public release. several of apples platforms and devices interpret anamorphic size differently. We're on it.

But no ac3 via hdmi?

Under aTV 1.1 (mod'd) I was getting ac-3 via both hdmi and optical. Now under aTV 2.0, and using the latest svn of handbrake I am no longer getting ac-3 via hdmi. Can anyone else confirm that hdmi no longer passes ac-3?

Truth be told my hdmi only goes to my tv at the moment so it is of no use. But before I got the old ac-3 "static" out of my tv speakers whereas now my aTV is just sending stereo.

my :apple:TV is connected to AV receiver via HDMI and passes AC3.

Weirdness. Perhaps there is something going on whereby the HDMI is auto-sensing that my TV doesn't handle ac-3? I know HDMI does a bunch of auto-detection but this is a bit beyond my home theater knowledge.

if you are encoding Dolby PLII + AC-3 audio in Handbrake your TV should have audio now as the DPLII should be passing.

How would the aTV know to pass the DPLII instead of the AC3? I have dolby digital out set to "on" in the aTV prefs.

Hey dyna, any ETA for 0.9.2? Thanks for all your efforts (and the dev team).
Of course not ;) . However I would say it would be a very bad time to start re-encoding your library for your atv in the next day or two. Might be considered a waste of time.

Another suggestion, if you have the space, is save your files on your drive. That way, when HB is out, you have a head start and can easily load up your cue list.

Thanks - appreciate all your work on this. Just wanted to check I wasn't doing anything stupid at my end!!
