I would absolutely buy a longitudinal folding iphone like this. I used the samsung version in a shop several months ago shop and it felt like a game changer to me which I haven't felt in years in the mobile space. Would not leave apple ecosystem however - well, certainly not for google. Price perfectly acceptable to me.

I don’t want anything from Apple until the “glass” is in the fold area. It will happen. Just give it time. I don’t want anything like Google or Samsung have made. Those screen protectors that can’t be removed basically like holding the screen together with tape! Apple will sell many, so they need to wait until the technology is capable of not breaking within four days like one famous reviewer of the Google folding phone.
No offense, but you don't know what you are talking about here. You can remove the factory screen protector from the inner display and it doesn't void the warranty. I've done this with every foldable I've owned. Never had any issues, not even a single scratch on any of the inner displays. And you know what's under that screen protector...glass.

I have an s23 lol. And I unfortunately have to use a pixel for work purposes.

The operating system is still a mess since I used it way back in the original G1 days. I’ve had nearly every milestone android phone (most droids on Verizon, most nexuses, the first 7 galaxies, the first “4g” phone in the evo).

I even owned niche Devices like the PlayStation phone Xperia play and I even owned the very first android foldable phone the Kyocera echo.

My opinion is based on the last 14 years of using android.

Ios has been perfectly fine for me every generation and model I’ve owned and I don’t have anywhere the level of issues or annoyances I do with android.

I enjoy my iPhone 14. My ultra has a lovely camera. That’s about it.

This is a beautiful phone but the Os is terrible. I’ll wait for apple. Much like the iPhone and ipad did for
Smartphones and tablets, apple
Will likely refine foldables.
I'm not sure what you do with your Android phones, but I haven't had any major issues at all over the past 2.5 years. Neither have any of my coworkers & friends who have made the switch from iOS in that timeframe. Had I ran into any major issues, I would've switched back to iOS. However, like I've mention before, in my use case Android has been more stable than iOS was. Which was the reason I made the switch in the first place, that and the fact that Apple still didn't have any plans on releasing a foldable anytime soon.

When Apple launches their own foldable, it’s going to be priced similarly and everyone that’s upset* right now, will be standing in line for it.
You can count me out of everyone lol. I have been using the same Apple device for four years. I will be buying last gen (or 2+ gens old) hardware if $1800 for a phone becomes the norm. I haven't stood in line for a phone since the 4s. Times change, and I also got older.

What about cases / protectors? The only people I see using a "naked" smartphone are fictitious people on drama series on Max and Apple TV+. In the real world we drop these things and have accidents. I'm curious to see case options that protect without getting in the way of the new era of usability.
As has been mentioned in this thread, cases and protectors exist. Some come directly from Google, others from Amazon, Best Buy, etc. I went down a bit of a rabbit hole of review videos, and there's even "mag safe" cases that let you use apples own mag safe and battery pack to charge the device. If this thing wasn't $1800 I might've actually got one based on this thread alone.

AS a whole, the Apple ecosystem is entirely perfect. I can buy and have equal support of the products I use and i know the products I purchase are ALL MADE FOR IT so it will work the way it should.

Airpods, Airtags, Macbook, Watch, TV, Safari password management, mail, music, and navigation. Everything works seamlessly and anytime I have any issues, I can always walk into my local store at anytime. I can contact Apple easily and have my device replaced the next day.

I actually have no need to download 3rd party apps because the 1st party apps work well.

The experience is unmatched.

On Android, i have to disable this or disable that from the start. I have to relearn an entire phone and how it works if i want to switch between manufacturers. Oh darn, my friend's android has this feautre oh but i don't. The 3rd party accessory systems are terrible as far as the connectivity to my devices.

To get the same parity I would have to buy a chromebook which is going to be a hell no and Chrome is a terrible browser that uses way too much resources. The gmail app is very clunky.

I spend more time having to fix my phone by downloading this launcher and replacing this default app because it sucks with a 3rd party app instead of acatually enjoying my phone.

The apps on Android feel lower quality than the IOS versions,

Android always feels like it has all these features and it does, more so than IOS, yet it feels like none of these features are ever really fleshed out. They are there but..... You can do this...but. They have so many features that are just half-baked. Even RCS sucks and Google should have enough infliuence to make it happen. It only works if both android users are using the same messaging app. Let me not get started on facetime/video chat seamless transition.

The fact I have to buy a Pixel or Samsung just to get quality support and updates.....when I could buy a used Iphone XS from 2018 and still get IOS 17 in september.

I can go on and on and on and on about how much I prefer IOS over Android.

Can I survive with Android? Sure I can. I did it for an entire year and there are some days I actually leave my iphone at home.

But I will always come back to IOS simply because when i use my phone, it works the same way it did when i left it and it is supoorted by a company that takes pride in its products and services instead of trying toi push out quanity over quality.

At this point, I wish Windows 10 mobile would come back. I prefer it over both.

***For those of you who are about to say "it's a solution in search of a problem" or "I don't get the appeal of foldables", it is simple really. I was using an iPhone and an iPad Mini daily, and I wanted two devices in one highly portable device. It's not rocket science***

I wouldn't dream of downvoting your report (except for the lack of paragraph breaks) :)

But more seriously, thanks for your report. It sounds like if you find yourself needing a phone AND a mini tablet around, you may be a candidate for a foldable -- and I would say that if you are considering a foldable, Google is probably the way to go for that, at least at the moment, for the reasons you outlined.

That crease tho ... that price tho ... that data-mining tho ... :)

I hear you. Nothing is perfect, but the Pixel Fold is a very good 1st Gen product. And you are correct, if you don't use a phone and mini tablet often, and you don't really care if you have the option of having a larger screen for media consumption, then I would say a foldable isn't for you (people in general).

I have Apple everything and the Fold is the first device outside the ecosystem I have stuck with since iphone 3G. I feel everything you're saying about it just works between devices. But now I want a different phone (Fold) and I feel if I keep drinking the Kool aid my phone will be on an island. That kinda irks me about apple now. For some it's great but for me now it isn't. Texting photos/videos, passwords and cloud storage are the hurdles so I'm investing in cross platform services so I can use the device I choose.

The crease doesn't bother me and I barely notice it visually after using it a couple weeks. Tactilely it's like a little love tap from the Fold as your finger caresses the crease.
How it would be after two years is the question. If they could make the screen easy (and I mean really easy) to replace then something like this could be really cool.

See I like the island. I really don’t need to leave it when it does everything I want and I don’t have to get resources from eleewhere

I actually ran into an issue just now with my ultra. They only accept Apple Pay at this bar. Not google or Samsung pay.
That’s another thing. Even though android is dominant, at least here in the Us, it’s apple forward.

I can forget my charger and someone has a lightning. My ultra….no type c.

Come on Apple, everyone else has released their foldables/flips, we are waiting on you now so hurry up!

At this point, I am going to assume that Apple is going all-in on their mixed reality headset and has no intention of releasing a folding phone of their own. Yes, one can argue that the two are not mutually exclusive, but they are essentially making a bet that wearables represent the future of mobile tech, not foldables.

Did I say anything about voiding the warranty? WTH?

And grab yourself a moh’s level 5 hardness tool, which will not scratch “glass” and run that across the piece of “glass” you think you have. You really don’t have chemistry or physics down!

You have lost it.

"Those screen protectors that can’t be removed basically like holding the screen together with tape!" is what you said. So, you are either implying that they can't be removed because it will void the warranty (incorrect), that they can't physically be removed (also incorrect) or that the screen is held together by the screen protector like tape (incorrect again). It's also ultra thin glass, not standard glass. There's a difference. Nice try though. You can feel free to try out Moh's hardness tools on your displays, see how far that will get you. Good luck!

Still not clear on what problem it solves.

Yes, I know the idea of folding might seem convenient but it literally doesn't make the phone smaller, just shifts it to a different form. And the argument that it gives you a "larger screen" may be legitimate but is sort of odd given that phones have evolved to what seems the optimal size for viewing and convenience, and I don't hear people openly complaining about the size.

The foldable screen is literally the classic example of a solution in search of a problem.

Yes, it shifts it into a form that fits in smaller pockets or spaces, that's what I needed. My Pro Max phone kept falling out of my pocket when I sat down because it sticks out -- my Flip 4 fits in the shallowist pocket. The main screen is also far more protected than a slab phone when it's closed -- no scratches from car keys or the like.

As for your last sentence, many, many people have found a function for it, including me.

iPhones are more expensive: iPhone 14 is the same as iPhone 13. I “upgraded” in 1 year. This is more expensive than a single more innovative phone every 3 years.
Team foldable since I tried one last year. I was converted.
iPhones are silly in comparison, same design, same speed, same camera, same features year after year. Only after 2 years they bring a little change. Waste of my money. But here I am anyway…

People didn’t complain about Motorazer nor about Blackberry and a new player came with a “solution that nobody asked for” and we here we are, a the new verge…

Not because it eliminates or does anything to the warranty. You haven’t had all the folding phones you claim if you want to keep down this direction.

You can see in so many videos of YouTubers showing foldable phones and the manufacturer says don’t remove it’s a critical part of the phone.

I don’t have time to go look all them up but it’s an easy find. I just remember Zach on Jerry Rig tearing apart the Pixel folding phone. And he said that’s not supposed to be removed. He also used Moh’s picks to check the screen hardness levels. You can think it’s glass all you want. Keep believing the narrative if you want.

The one I also read was the Verge and I went back and got you a quote…

“I have other bad news. After just a few days of using the Fold as my daily driver, I discovered a tiny hairline scratch on the factory-installed inner screen protector. That’s not exactly confidence-inspiring. One of my co-workers discovered a chip in the plastic bezel on his review unit, too. These are far from catastrophic, but the almost-year-old Z Fold 4 review unit that I have on hand doesn’t show any scratches as prominent as the one on the Pixel Fold. It suddenly makes more sense why Google didn’t make the Pixel Fold compatible with a stylus.”

For good measure here’s another. It takes five seconds to get more facts than you can provide with a simple Google Search:

Or you can do some due diligence to understand what you’re talking about.

Again, chemistry and physics. Basic principles here, Einstein!!!

This is what I think the iPhone Pro will turn into one day, except the big screen will be on the OUTSIDE so when folded you will get a screen on the front and back. On the inside will be the pro camera array. This would mean Apple would have to make a folded screen that can survive being dropped, scratched with keys in your pocket, and folded/unfolded a thousand times. But it seems silly to hide the folded screen on the inside. If it were on the outside then when folded either front or back screen could be the main screen, so it wouldn't matter which side was facing you when you picked it up. And if there were front facing cameras under the screen on the top and bottom of each folded screen then it wouldn't matter if you were holding the phone "upside down" when you pick it up, it would always be able to auto orient itself the right way. Plus the four camera array on the screen could take 3D video, which would be nice when FaceTiming someone wearing Vision Pro.

Those who keep saying that a Foldable is “a solution looking for a problem”…in the nicest way possible are just being ignorant. The slab phone design is obsolete and reached the end of its development, there is no where left to go apart from yearly iterative updates of the same thing. Foldables are the next stage with so many different potential possibilities.
