I upgraded 2018 iPad Pro 11. My biggest use for the iPad is watching content. YouTube, Netflix etc. I also wanted to catch up with the new tech, Apple AI etc..

I went with the 13" Pro. Best display and four speakers. The rest was just gravy.

Try this.. Go to YouTube, Search for '4K OLED demo' videos. Look for one with lots of black in it. Then set YouTube to the highest resolution and turn the brightness way up. (Give it a slight reverse pinch to expand the video to get rid of the bars above and below the scene).

Watch it in a darkened room. Then watch the same video using the same settings with your old iPad . Doing that convinced me that the swap to a new iPad was worth it.

With my old iPad when I turn up the brightness, the blacks appear grey as the backlight shows through. The OLEDs have no back light so the blacks stay jet black. The contrast is amazing.

Well, it depends on your usage and workflow, but the computing power difference between the two devices is staggering .
Also the battery after 6 years probably was quite depleted .
It’s amazing that how durable an iPad battery can be. My old iPP from 2016, used 2-3 hours per day 365, has battery that is still completely fine. It was neither battery nor processing power (light use case) that made me to upgrade a couple of months ago, but lack of iPadOS support. 11” screen is nicer, too :)

I’m still rocking an 11” iPad Pro. I’m an artist, and it is my main content creation tool. These things last forever! I was tempted by the OLED screen of the new M4 ipad pros, but haven’t upgraded yet. I just don’t feel the need to spend tht much right now. Perhaps when the M5 iPad Pros come out? I dunno.

I beg to differ : my iPad Pro M1 from 01/2022 took a noticeable hit on the battery, which is now at 84%.
Yes, they are solid compared to relatively tiny iPhone’s batteries, but still degraded after 3/4 years.

My iPP won’t tell, but a quick estimate tells that the device has only gone through some 700-800 charging cycles. How many cycles your iPP has, about the same?

Mine is below 600…
Try to run this little free shortcut: it will really tell you the health of your battery compared to new.

In my case is 83%, which is noticeable on a working day

And I’m a very aware user, with technical notions about how to preserve battery life.
I’m very curious to see if your battery really is lucky or you are just not noticing the degradation.

It’s thinner.

What are you going to use the Lidar for, if you don’t mind me asking?
I'm not sure! I did try a couple of apps for 3D scanning but goodness they're expensive, so didn't sign up. Not sure what else it can do. Face recognition comes from the front camera but Lidar is on the back.......🤷‍♂️

Still on a iPad Pro 12.9” 2017. Works absolutely fine apart from deteriora battery life. No longer gets iPadOS updates despite lesser iPhone processors still getting them 🤨

Thanks for the tip. I couldn’t make stupid Siri to obey me, though. Whatta surprise xD It could well be that I’m not noticing the degradation, but if that’s the case, I’ve been blissfully ignorant :) That device has been good to me, and still gives me hours of streaming and browsing, whatever its battery health is.

I’ll report back, if I’ll ever get that moronic piece of software to do what I want.

You don’t need Siri for that. On my link there is a tutorial. It literally takes 20 seconds.
I’d be curious to see which level of degradation it reaches after 6 years

Shortly after the new Pro 13” was announced, the battery stamina on my gen3 12.9” took a dive.
I panicked, replaced it with a 13” but like most, I found no appreciable improvements, because I’m a very light duty user.
The display was remarkable, but I was, and still am, pretty miffed that the battery stamina is no better than my tired older model.
Hopefully it is reliable for the next four years.

How is the battery life for you guys?

Duh, I was being moronic, and in a rush. I made the stuff in the tutorial, but the analytics file is not available yet. I have to for it to appear, as the video instructed. Will get back to you later!

I use my apple products till they’re unusable, then I replace it.

The “problem” is they don’t simply become unusable one day. They start degrading , especially the battery, over a quite long period of time, affecting your daily usage, before becoming unusable. And the battery swap process is a PITA with Apple

I kind of feel the same way regarding my M1 and M4.

There's something about the M4 that makes it feel like more of a premium device, but I can't quite put my finger on what it is that makes it better than my 2021 iPad, because at the same time, it feels like such a similar device.

I have decided, though, to go forward and use my M1 as more of a "slate" and leave it detached from the Magic Keyboard, while using my M4 as more of a laptop-like device and keeping it on the Magic Keyboard.
I have the M1 Pro and see very, very little difference when putting it up against the M4 on Apple’s comparison tool. Unless you need the faster chip (not that M1 is slow for a tablet), there’s not much changed.

I'm another of those still getting by on the whole just fine with my 2018 iPad Pro 12.9. This year I have been skirting around the idea of upgrading, more because 6 years with the same device seems a long time rather than a desperate need to, but am finding it hard to justify £1299 for the M4 model plus however much else for the Magic Keyboard.

Just earlier today I thought I might look at refurbished 5th and 6th gen models on the Apple Store and I'm not really impressed by the savings to be had there. Matching the 256gb you now get as standard on the 7th gen, they have a 5th gen for £829 and a 6th gen for £979, prices that make a brand new 7th gen look almost reasonable.

The lack of any real Walmart or Costco heavy discounting equivalent is a problem in the UK. Prices are perpetually steep, even shady e-bay of Facebook Marketplace traders.

So, here is the analysis. 817 cycles and health >80% Not bad, huh?

The 2018 iPad Pro has held up remarkably well. Then again, it was way overpowered at release. :) I plan on keeping mine for a long time still.
Same here.
Will upgrade when iPadOS gets a significant upgrade
and 32GB memory and 4TB+ storage options are available.
So probably when the M7 arrives. :p
