So who wants to fight for...hard drives?
....

No one wants to fight for them, but this is the holiday season and geeks, nerds and some consumers are out upgrading or buying new HDDs. We have OEMs like Apple, HP and Toshiba constantly buying HDDs. Not to mention those companies that buy HDDs for their IT departments or Data centers.

That's what I meant ;) OEMs will charge us a bit more so they can pay the repair costs. It's not like they will send us all a letter asking for money, or beg on the streets :p

... and here I was thinking Supply/Demand is kicking in!:p

If you're bored fix your site since it doesn't work.

I believe Acer is the first OEM to bump up prices due to the floods. The last significant component price increases that I recall in recent memory are DDR3 from late 2009, the HD 5800 release, and the 8800GT.

Beyond that prices have been taking their usual downward trends with plentiful supply. Only the 1999 Taiwanese earthquake and these floods really stand out being natural disasters. I would not be surprised by much older events though.

The HD5800 series was just something special. AMD had the best GPU out there and TSMC just could not cope. I was a victim of the 2009 DDR3 increase. Sucks.
Bitcoin mining wiped out the remaining new stocks of the HD 5830 and 5850 in 2011. At launch the HD 5850 could pull over ~$300. The last few were around ~$139 new at retail. I am sure those Bitcoin miner's hardware is turning up on eBay nowadays.

I don't get it. Which sites take Bitcoins?

I hadn't even realised this was going on.....until I went shopping for HD's and my £264 for 4x2tb drives turned into £600.

Thats the FreeNAS box idea thrown right out of the window!

...and there was me wondering if I could afford the £264 at the moment!

I suppose I'll put the money to one side until the prices drop back down and start taking more notice of what's going on in the world.

Wow. I'm only using 5GB of my hard drive with documents and Apps. What the hell are you storing to use so much?

Lots and lots of media. I've got hundreds (300+ and growing) of my favorite movies at an average file size of 12.5GB. Some are as small as 7GB, some as large as 30GB. 95% of them are 1080p, though. I'm a quality stickler and hate DVD quality anything and 720p is doable.

I've also got quite a bit of TV shows. I've got every season and episode of Dexter, Breaking Bad, Grey's Anatomy, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Office (UK and US), Jackass, Viva La Bam, and a ton of other shows from my childhood. If there is HD/Blu Ray quality out there, I've got it for these shows.

Not to mention about 50GB worth of photos (lots of DSLR 18mp pics), 15GB of music (used to be about 150GB).

Between many OS installs, video game installs, as well as other random stuff- I've got a lot of space taken up. I don't even have very much compared to some of my friends.

One thing left to wonder. How is Apple and other OEMs going to handle this? Higher priced computers?

Yes.

They will be forced to negotiate new contracts with suppliers who do not have factories in Bangkok, and these contracts will be higher cost as the supply is extremely tight right now.

that or they are hoping that their supplies will hold out long enough to make it threw the shortage. My understanding is they have a max of around a 6 week supply. The question for them is if the shortage will last longer than that. That depends on how bad the damage fully is and how quickly other places can spin up.
But yeah we can see prices going up.

That tells all. Might take up to two years to recover according to DigiTimes.

I've noticed while prices are much higher than they were target is selling a WD 2tb external for 89.99 and for some reason best buy has a 2tb for 79.99 and that same drive is 150+ from amazon. Me thinks I should scoop some up before the price triples everywhere

Big box stores tend to be the last to react to price changes. Which is good when prices go up, but they'll eventually raise theirs, and when prices drop, they'll be much more expensive than everyone else.

Snatching up a 2TB drive to keep as a backup in case you have a HD failure sometime in the next few months probably isn't a terrible idea though.

I've been going back and fourth on whether i want to expand storage on my mac pro. Currently have 3 500GB and a 1TB in it. and with news that prices may not come back down till 2012 I'm thinking about picking up a few of the drives from best buy
