I have some expensive stainless steel pans that came with warnings not to put them in the dishwasher, so I think it would not be a good idea for the milanese band either.

My brother once used dishwasher detergent to wash his car. It totally striped all the shiny finish off of the car. He could not get it back even after several coats of wax and buffing.
Sounds harsh. But your brother is a complete fool. Who washes a car with dishwasher detergent?!?!

He should have been happy it was just the finish of his car that got stripped, and not the skin off his hands too. :p Dishwasher detergent really does a number on a lot of things. It even etches glass after enough runs through the washer.

Did you ask what on earth gave him the idea to try this...?

Teenage boys don't often have life experience to know about things like this. To him, soap was soap, it was there and handy. All he knew was the dishes came out of the dishwasher all sparkly, so why not his old car. Fifty years later it's still a running joke with us. Anything that is really grimy we say to scrub it with Cascade.

Next up: will Mr Muscle® Oven Cleaner get my Apple Watch clean?

After all, it cleans my oven and I only have to wipe it away with a damp cloth...

I was wondering if anyone had done this and how it turned out.
I recently got the Milanese loop and had the same question. This thread was one of the first results on Google. I ended up putting mine through the dishwasher, and it came out great. I wouldn't do it very often because of the heat, but I don't see why an occasional wash in the dishwasher would be an issue.

I don't understand threads like this. If you conjure up crazy ideas, you need to be the guinea pig. Same thing with other threads like "Has anyone dyed their Sport band with a Rit dye?" and "Have you destroyed this third party band in order to fit the Apple Watch?"

Be the guinea pig and report back to us.
I don't understand responses like this. The OP was simply asking if anyone had tried this cleaning method and what their results were. The OP wasn't asking someone to try it, they were asking if anyone already had tried it.
Yes unless any other nutballs are going to reply here, he's on his own!
Nutball here.
I'm just a little surprised you thought you'd find someone who has done this...
Again, I had the same thought about using the dishwasher. I don't think it's all that crazy. An ultrasonic cleaner would be ideal, but I don't see an issue with an occasional run through the dishwasher.

I just cleaned mine in a sonic cleaner. Warm water with one drop of detergent. It wasn't that dirty, just lost it's sheen but you could see the dirt coming off it.

I have Cuisinart SS pans and they are specifically dishwasher safe. I've run them through the dishwasher probably 200 times over the years and they look brand new. My good quality SS (18/10) flatware is 20+ years old and has been through the dishwasher probably 5000 times and also still looks new. Cheap flatware is usually 18/0 and will absolutely rust. A dishwasher will ruin the look of anodized cookware.

I wouldn't worry about the SS band so much as any connections or rubber inside the lugs.

I wouldn’t put a Milanese or stainless link in the dishwasher, because dishwashers contain salt...

Edit: Milanese magnet and also any internal springs are at rust risk I expect. Which is no doubt why Apple say these bands are not waterproof.

The few times it doesn't coincide with my daily charging cycle I simply wear it when I take a bath/shower; that's been more than enough to keep it clean.

The problem with the dishwasher is threefold; first there are rubber parts (neither like the heat nor the chemicals), then there are the chemicals that could discolour etc the actual stainless steel, and finally you might end up with lumps of fat/food getting into the watchband and essentially harden during the drying portion of the program.

Overall you risk creating problems potentially ruining the watchband, when a one minute rinse under running water usually is all that's needed; with perhaps a drop of detergent or hand soap if things are really bad.

And if you really want to splurge and feel extra pretty you can always go to a jeweller to have it cleaned; like someone already suggested.

I bought a Ultra Sonic cleaner and used that. Mine wasn't that dirty but a handy to have around. $35-$40 on Amazon.
It is not the dishwasher that is the problem, it is the strong detergent they use. A kid that used to work for me started up MXR years ago, he took me through their fledgling factory and there was a dishwasher sit there. I asked what they used that for and he said they ran all PC boards through it to clean off resins from soldering! MXR was a leader in foot pedal effects for electric guitars. When I was a kid, my parents bought a set of aluminum glasses in various colors. One run through the dw and all the color anodizing was gone.

You are all missing the point of the original question.

The OP is not talking about the Milanese band, he's asking about the Malanese band! Completely different thing! Made by hand by local craftsmen in the village of Malana in the upper reaches of the Kulu valley in Himachal Pradesh, India!

Dishwasher soap and high temperature water will cause the locally sourced dyes used in these very unique and beautiful bands to run, and for that reason dishwasher cleaning is very definitely NOT recommended!
