I not so naive as to believe that everything Steve Jobs does is the be all to end all but we have to give him credit for OS X. It might not be everything we want it to be yet but it's still one hell of an OS. I've done things in OS X that would sent most other OSes into shock. This damn thing just keeps right on chugging away. I am truly and thoroughly impressed. Let's hear a Windows user make that boast.

Has anyone crashed OS X lately?

I've been using X nearly full time since the Public Beta came out.
I've had a panic once.
I've had 3 lockups when I've tried to shut down.
I've had a lockup when I updated the OS, force quit the installer when it asked me to restart, kept using it for an hour or so, changed the startup disk and then shut down (obviously a deliberate attempt to break it!)
I've had to reinstall once (a painless procedure - it just replaces the files that are broken or missing) after I installed Netscape. I had the same thing happen in OS 9 when I installed Nestscape. Netscape is bad.
So thats one panic, 4 lockups and one reinstall in the space of about a year. (Yes, I keep count. I tease my PC using friends).
So about one problem every 2 months. No OS could match that. I LOVE X!!!

i've had numerous lockups where the dvd player will lock up if i stop a dvd and eject through the control palette, and i cannot force quit so i gotta reboot everytime i forget to shut down dvd player and then eject, hmm beyond that after i installed office i was trying to use darwin to setup the firewall so office couldnt go and look for other macs on the network using the same serial for the software and lock me out, and when i typed the command to check if it worked the system crashed and i had text scrolling from the top of my screen to the bottom, a white screen error if you know what i mean, and the last crash was when i booted up the ibook with the AV cable in and it didnt recognize to switch resolutions during bootup and crashed, beyond that nothing its a freakin amazing os and i love how it doesnt crash from normal usage unlike xtra penetrable from microsloth....

OS X Kicks Ass!!!
I haven't had any problems for so long that I was getting bored so today I tried something I thought for sure would crash the system.
While printing out a Photoshop image in Classic, I switched back to the OS X Finder and then proceeded to open iTunes and play music. I thought for sure it would crash but it didn't. And no I don't have background printing on. Ocassionally I've had to force quit applications but like I said it never brings down the entire system. OS X is a bad mother...... well you get the point.

don't even try to upgrade to macosx if you happen to have a scsi card installed ... that's what I had ...
then ... after reboot the only thing u get is a smiling mac face ... ;-)
let's seee if i can make the machine work again, if i rip out the scsi card ... though i don't know waht to do then .... if it works ... i need ths scsi card ...
but then .... no systme crashes on all the other macosx machines i have. at all

Ever since I put os X on my iMac its has been running like a dream. NO crashes No nothing. My only problem is AOL booting me off the net. Thats my only complaint. (I'm goona get a new ISP)

Maybe but considering that usually in OS 9 and below whenever you print something it basically takes over your computer until the printing is done, I didn't know what to expect. Not to mention I also have an ADSL modem with Outlook Express running in the background checking my e-mail every five minutes and Illustrator was open at the time, I was pretty impressed.

2 times I've had problems with applications shutting down so the computer could shut down....it's been once with iTunes & once with IE 5.1...
just yesterday I was doing a lot of web surfing and downloads....not to mention some installs.....all without restarting.....and for some weird reason the dock disappeared and I couldn't get it to show up whenever I dragged the cursor to where it resides....so I restarted....
other than that, it's been pretty rock solid...

Yes. I have a scsi Scanmaker X6 with an adaptec 2906 card installed - and could not boot under os x.
Until recently I found that adaptec offered a beta driver for that card. I installed it right away. Now the OS runs perfectly, but still I can't run the scanner under os x. Have to use PS 5.5 under 9.2 to use it.
That is anoying.
I have to get a new scanner I believe. The scsi problem is solved though.

Unfortunately I can get my machine to crash just about every day.
I've been using X since DP4 and had no problems until 10.0. I had 2 kernel panics in 10.0 and one in 10.1. That's about it until recently.
My TiBook is in the same location that I had my Pismo, but it's just at the edge of the range it can reach. When the signal is weak and the TiBook loses connection the machine just freezes. It takes a hard reboot to get it going again. OS 9 had networking problems like this but I was amazed to find it in X.
I still love X and even with this problem my machine crashes less often than my Windows 2000 machine at work.

i really have no problems with OS X, and it is the only OS i use, being that OS X is the (deciding) reason i switched to mac.
every once in a while i run into problems akin to those mentioned before such as dock issues and a general hang. i always get it to work without rebooting.
restarting your finder can do wonders.
before rebooting, just try logging out and in again.
finally, make sure you are patient with shutdown procedures...if you've ever seen a UNIX/clone machine shutdown you'd know what i'm talking about. UNIX makes sure its filesystem is well kept, and does NOT like hard reboots.
oh ya, and my experience is on a laptop going in and out of sleep all day. instantaneously.

The beta Macally mouse Kext/driver is definately a work in progress.
I had OS X lock up twice while using the thing. About all it did was let me use the whell button to click, yippee. Other features already work with OS X as-is.
It also caused other software to not work very well. Tape 2.0 (unreleased to general public so don't go looking for it) crashed 50% of the time opening an app bundle, or always on opening a second app bundle. After removing the Macally KEXT Tape worked reliably 100% of the time. Project Builder seems to launch faster now as well.
I also have the Contour Shuttle PRO beta KEXT, but it seems to actually work properly. LOVE THIS THING!
Otherwise OS X 10.1 seems to be okay (as long as you are not a programmer doing funky stuff with it constantly).
I run XDarwin w/X-windows 4.1 okay, run some pure UNIX apps, start/stop Classic every few days and everything seems to be okay.
G4 450, 256 MB RAM (yes i should have gotten some more, got a Shuttle Pro instead) 10.1.2/9.2.2, separate hard drives for OS X and Classic.
Now wishin I had $3k for a dual 1 GHz. Sweeeeeeeeet!

I haven't used OS X much yet, but I can make OS X crash hard when trying to connect to my Windows XP box via smbutil. I haven't figured out the exact cause, because it doesn't do it 100% of the time. There seems to be a bug in the SMB file system driver.

Unfortunately for me when the system hangs looking for the AirPort, it really hangs. No response from the entire system. The mouse moves but can't interact with anything on the screen (the dock even freezes in mid-motion) and the keyboard can't get a response either.
Bummer.
But I love OS X all the same. It's a bug that'll get rooted out sooner or later.
I've been running OS X since 10.1 came out on my iMac 500, 640 MB RAM. I have a cable modem, use Photoshop 6, Filemaker 5, Office 2001, and SoundEdit 16 in Classic, and IE 5, Limewire, iTunes, iMovie in OS X. Have a tapedeck plugged in via a Griffin iMic to rip MP3's of analog music, have a Macally keyboard and two-button mouse with scollwheel, and an Epson 777i printer. I also have a Linksys router which I use to set up a LAN when I bring a Wallstreet or TiBook home from work.
In the 4(?) months I've been pounding on this machine, I have NEVER had to force restart. With the exception of software upgrades/installs that have required a restart, the machine is always on.
At work my G4 400 256 MB has been running 10.1 for about 3 months. I use this machine to test software in Classic and troubleshoot Quark 4, Illustrator 10, Office 98, Filemaker 4, Photoshop 6, Outlook Exchange client 8.2.2 and 2001, Citrix client, and BBEdit. I've had to force quit apps (usually Microsoft apps when going from Classic to X), but no kernel panics.

I've crashed OS X twice. Once when using my Que!Fire CD burner, after completing the burn, I experienced a kernel panic.
The second time, however, was just last night and it was truly bizarre.
I've been beta testing a bunch of unmentionable applications and I had just inserted a music CD into my CD drive. Started groovin to the tunes and got an instant message from a buddy. I switched over to Adium to reply and just as I hit the return key to send my reply, the CD starts skipping and the entire Mac locks up. I couldn't force quit and regain control of the Mac, so I simply rebooted by pressing the restart button.
That's about it. No other major crashes, even with all the major beta testing going on.
However, I will say that OS X is DAMN buggy! Don't blame the developers for being slow to release applications, it's not their fault. Honest!

OS 10.1 was the decision maker for me buying my TiPB 500. I had been eying the Ti for some time, and it was the release of 10.1 that prompted me to buy. So far I have not had any kernel panics, the only problems I have had, deal with applications. Also running classic apps can tend to tax the system. I have seen some others with problems. They were using the newer 667 Mhz Ti's and were doing a presentation (800x600) with a projector (sony, new). Anyway they were demonstrating iMovie, making some changes which made iMove start to render, essentially it slowed the machine down to a crawl. They were forced to restart the computer. The other demo, on the same day was having to do with iDVD, also attempting to render and display on 2 screens. Those are the closed things to crashes I can think of.
I don't do heavy duty stuff on my PB, so I am not supprised that there have been no crashes. I am a lot rougher on my PC at home running Win2K. Also solid as a rock. I have no experiance with XP, so I cannot say anything about that. I can say that in my experiance, here are the most stable OS's in order of best to worst:
1) Win2K
2) OS X.1 (A very close runner up)
3) Win NT 4.0
4) Mac OS 9 & 8
5) Win 98
6) Win 95
The only other OS I have extensive experiance with is MS-DOS. I don't feel it is fair to compare DOS with the other 6 listed as there is no way to run multiple apps at the same time. But, it doesn't crash, ever!
