I got a Ipad 64GB 3G+Wifi...and I got a apple airport Extreme router (just got it about 3 weeks go brand new) I got my Ipad on the 5GB wifi network at home. Flawless! No issues what so ever.

Do you honestly think it can be fixed with a software update ?

My thoughts are a hardware issue , I hope I'm wrong

I do :)
The fact that it fluctuates so much going from 1 bar to 3 and vice versa leads me to believe it's software related rather than hardware related. If it was crappy range all the time in one location that's near the access point I'd believe it was hardware related, however this doesn't seem to be the case.

As others have stated, my belief is this is just faulty battery management coming into play. Most laptop network cards do this as well. Basically they lower the power of the antenna when not in use which results in lower throughput but less battery drain. Once needed again, power is increased and you gain signal. I believe this is why the apple support document says to open a browser when signal goes down: "Open Safari and try to load a webpage to see if the Wi-Fi signal improves."

I doubt apple would pick hardware without doing testing first.

Yesterday I was in a restaurant with my 3G. I was on their wi-fi and it was fine but it suddenly "forgot" I was on their access point and never reconnected. I had to go back into the wi-fi settings and reselect the access point to continue.

Flawless on my Time Capsule. However, at the university, it worked great for two days and now I can't even login to the network. I enter my information and submit, and it just hangs

On 5/5 I was at a car dealership buying a car. I connected to their wifi only after turning auto-fill off.

On 5/11 I returned to get my car buffed. I could not connect to their wifi at all this time, no matter what in tried. Instead of turning 3G on I watched a tv show I had downloaded the night before. My car was done by the time the show was done so I never tried again. Oh, their network was not down because my iPhone connected right away.

Other places in town with Wifi networks I can connect to without a problem, but there's only been a couple.

I can tell you first hand that if I'm more than 30 ft away from my router the signal drops and will work for a while but slower than normal and then finally it will stop working period. I've had to refresh my connection on several occasions to get it working. I've been in the middle of surfing the net and Safari would just stall. That's happened to me on 3 different routers. It works great if I'm sitting close but not very good in another room.

I seriously doubt Apple has tested every single piece of hardware individually.

Maybe the update will resolve my issue but I'm not willing to wait to find out. Tommorow is day 14 , to the Apple store I go.

Individually no. However they do test it as a whole in a real world environment prior to production (prototypes). I'm not saying it's not hardware related, just that it's unlikely based on my own experience and knowledge of hardware.

Only time will tell though.

Nope.

No problems at all, always full bars, have been on three different networks now, always works the same.

I hear what your saying about testing but nothing mass produced is 100% perfect. It happens ....even with Apple

Your obviously far more knowledgeable about this than I , and I hope it's all resolved with the update. I'm just not the gambling type and will do an exchange , even if it means waiting on the new one.

I do appreciate your feedback.
