I'm getting there. I've always used iCloud for contacts, Safari data, Calendar, Reminders and Notes. I've always continued to use Gmail for my email until last week.

I've noticed Gmail support within iOS getting worse and worse (constantly being asked for my Gmail password, connection issues, no push to the iOS Mail App, etc) so I finally went for it last week and moved my email over to iCloud too. So far I'm REALLY happy with it. It's nice having all of those services under the same cloud (no pun intended) and mail just feels a lot smoother, cleaner and faster now on my iPhone, iPad and MacBook Pro.

The only holdout for me is the iCloud Drive storage. I still use Google Drive and Dropbox for everything. iCloud Drive would have to have file sharing comparable to those services, and I would need more control over my document library (like deleting those stupid folders iCloud Drive adds in - for Automator, for example)

When iCloud Drive gets better I'll be 100% in the iCloud world. So far it's all working really, really well. I should have taken the plunge to move my email over to it sooner. This is 2015 - no email push (with Gmail) in the Mail app? C'mon - that's just not gonna work for me.

Just remember that iCloud drive is a SYNCING service.... it is NOT "storage". All iCloud drive does is syncs data between devices.

Its total garbage.
I have not heard that before about iCloud Drive. So if I get a new computer and login to my iCloud Account it would not be able to download my documents? I know it downloads everything else from iCloud but have not had a chance to try iCloud Drive in this manner.

And for the OP. iCloud Drive is only 1 part of iCloud. iCloud Photos and Mail and Calendar etc. are not store on iCloud Drive but they are in iCloud. It is not total garbage. Really see for yourself.

iCloud Drive does not have a selective sync feature. Meaning, you have no choice between what you can and cannot store on your devices. This is what iCloud Drive is a glorified syncing service.

Sure, you can get a new macbook and iCloud drive will port all of your data to that computer, but you have no choice over what you can and cannot store on the device.

iCloud Drive in its current form is not a sustainable model.

That is what I thought. To do that I would assume it does store you documents in the cloud. I understand selective sync would be nice to have but since I personally do not have more data in iCloud Drive then I have space on my devices it is not a problem for me. My point is not everybody has the same requirement as you.

So basically somewhere in gmail.com u setup iCloud forwarding to your iCloud email address?

Yes that's what I did. I just periodically check that actual Gmail account to let people know if they're still sending to my old Gmail instead of my iCloud. I'll do that for a while yet and I'll probably always keep that forwarding in place since my Gmail was my only email address for years and years. So far I'm really happy with iCloud mail, though.

You might be able to create a rule in iCloud to move old gmail to a folder. Then you do not have to log back into gmail to know who is sending email to gmail.

I think I've pretty much moved to everything in iCloud. I love having all my photos accessible wherever I am. I still have a Gmail account but honestly, it's only on my MBP and I usually get junk emails (political donations, shoe emails, etc.) I should just go through and turn that off.

I am thinking of canceling my iTunes Match service. I recently had to restore my iPhone and have to redownload all the music to have it on my iPhone. I realized that the only benefit I'm using of it is ad free iTunes Radio, which I rarely listen to since I follow a lot of Podcasts.

Deletion of iCloud Backup

I appear to have maxed out my iCloud storage, so without buying more space, how do I delete the backups? I have tried Settings > iCloud > Manage Storage but that feature does not respond. It is not responsive and I believe it is 'greyed out'. Any help appreciated.:(

If you're talking about iOS device backups, go to a device you're logged into iCloud on, then to Settings/Storage/Manage Storage, then select each backup you want to delete.

I keep all of my documents, photos, emails, notes, reminders, calendars, contacts and music on iCloud. I use iCloud drive for some other files, but I still keep all my video files and misc on my Mac.
