Beginning in Big Sur, Apple broke Apple Photos. I can no longer move images beyond the computer screen, so I am stuck move, scroll, move, scroll, etc. Also, manual sorting will not maintain within albums. Have they fixed these issues in Monterey, that were broken in Big Sur?

sounds like you are having an issue in big sur, not that photos is broken. & what do you mean 'move beyond the computer screen'? to a second screen?

in big sur (and still in monterey), i can manually sort photos in an album as well, and they stay where i put them.

It sounds like your window is too big for some reason, did you try to resize the window by grabbing the corner and dragging?

It sounds like his window is sized bigger than his screen, and he sees some photos just out of view that he can not grab to do what he wants. I think he just needed to manually resize the window. I have not had any issues with Photos since like v 3-4 or something, when there was like major changes (I dont recall what they were, but I has issues on my black MacBook, circa 2009 or so.

Apparently you guy's don't use Apple Photos in Big Sur or you would know what I am describing. I cannot drag an image inside an album beyond the screen. Please prove me wrong. Show me a video of you using Big Sur and dragging beyond the the screen IN AN ALBUM, please.

When you say "beyond the screen," do you mean beyond the Photos app window onto the desktop? It's a little hard to understand what you're describing but maybe if you posted a video of what you're trying to do, it will help the rest of us who would like to help.

Ah ok, I think I see what you're asking about, but let me confirm. You want to select a photo and then scroll up in the app, but scrolling with a photo selected doesn't allow you to move up very far. When that happens you drop the photo and scroll up some more. Is that accurate?

If this is accurate, in Big Sur, I'm able to scroll up to the top (or any point in between) by using the scroll wheel on my mouse while the photo I want to move is selected. I'm using a Magic Mouse 2.

No, I want to move a selection of images within the album to the top of the images within the album. I CANNOT DO THIS IN Big Sur. I must move, stop, scroll up, move, stop, scroll up, move, stop, scroll up, etc. Apparently you don't rely upon Photos or you would know this is an issue in Big Sur. I want to move the images in one move to the top of the album, like in Catalina, before they broke Big Sur Photos.

Has this been corrected in Monterey?

I use Photos almost daily in Big Sur, and move photos around in albums often.

I am able to do this in Big Sur with a single or multiple photos within an album in one move. I can take the last photo in a large album (where I can't see the top of the album), and move it into the first position. The key is using the scroll feature on your mouse while trying to move the photos. Start to move them and then scroll with your mouse.

This is my last response on this question.

no point in asking for help if you refuse to listen. this isn't an OS problem, it's a problem you're having. if you really want to sort it out, treat this community well, and discuss the issue, answer questions... you know, have a dialog....

After about 30 minutes of using the scroll wheel on my trackball to move images inside large image albums, I am amazed Apple wanted to design cars. Can you imagine an Apple car dependent upon software updates which worked perfectly before the upgrade? Wonder how many folk's would die in their prized Apple car?

This isn't necessarily an OS problem, but it is dependent on OS updates since the Photos app isn't updated as a standalone app through the App Store.

Do you know of any other solutions besides telling us it's a problem blackxacto is having? I'm having the same problem. Have you tried it? It's clunky with a trackpad since I have to use one hand to click the photo(s) and the other hand to scroll. Using the Magic Mouse is even worse because it won't let you flick to scroll quickly.

I'm not sure if you really understand what the problem is, or how annoying it can be. You know how in Finder when you drag a file to the edge of the window, it'll start scrolling automatically in that direction so you can put the file where you want it? Or if you drag a cell in Numbers, it'll autoscroll. Or if you drag music around in your playlist, it'll autoscroll. That's just standard UX these days, which doesn't work in Photos anymore. Whether by design or unintentionally, who knows...

Hope you can explain this issue better than i did. The scroll wheel moving is a farce.

I’m still awaiting anyone who installed Monteray to advise if the situation has changed.

I have installed Monterey / beta 2 / Photos 7

I can confirm that in the "Library" main window (All Photos) I cannot scroll or move pictures as per your video

This makes sense to me because the sort options in the Main Library are by date - ie Years/Months/Days/ All Photos
- and you can narrow a search by these date parameters or use the Search window at the top right of the main window

On the other hand in the "My Albums" playlist and within a specific Album you can scroll and move pictures as you are wanting to do

Perhaps a workaround would be to create a "Catch All" album or just use specific albums to organize the photos and videos and arrange / move them to where you like

Maybe I don't understand your post as well - like some of the others on this thread? - but this behavior is not new as far as I can tell - it is the same for Mojave + Photos 4

1. I make an ALBUM inside Photos App. 2. add images to this ALBUM from my Photo Library. 3. Select the album, then select one image in the album. 4. Click+Drag this image beyond the computer screen to move its position manually in the album. 5. You cant move beyond the screen. You must stop the drag. 6. Scroll the computer window up/down, then drag again. Dragging was not blocked in Mojave, dragging worked in Mojave and High Sierra. Big Sur broke it.

I’m still not sure if mizkn understands what I am describing.

I think I might understand what you are saying now...Try holding your index finger down on the selected photo, and doing a two finger scroll with your middle and ring fingers pressed together (But separate from index finger)

No you don't my friend. How do I do that on an iMac? Using the scroll wheel to move multiple images isn't productive. One image, maybe. Just my opinion.

Yes you are correct - an album / play list / with many photos (more than fit in the window) will not scroll with drag and drop in Montrerey

FWIW - I submitted a bug report on the beta feedback

OP:

I don't use Photos ... hardly ever.

But... could you try this?
1. Select the pic you want to move by clicking on it ONE time.
2. Type "command-C" (for "copy")
3. Now, let go of the pic and move to the other library or folder you wish to copy TO.
4. Click anywhere within that library, and then type "command-V" (for paste).

Does this work?
If it does, and the photo is copied into the other folder, you may now have to "go back to" the first folder, and delete that copy of the pic...
