AppleCare is not AppleCare+. AppleCare only extends the manufacturer’s warranty by a year, which is why your accidental damage on your MacBook wasn’t covered. If you had purchased AppleCare+, screen or external enclosure damage costs $100 to fix which is pretty reasonable IMO.

The case for AppleCare+ on the iPhone isn’t so clear cut, because of the enormous premiums it commands relative to the price of the phone. On the iPad Pro it’s mostly a no-brainer - the repair costs max out at $100 as opposed to $600+.

If you feel like you’re supremely confident of not damaging your device then sure, don’t get AppleCare+. Just don’t complain about it when the other shoe drops.

i don't remember there being an apple care + in 2006 but anyways like I said personally I think carrier insurance is the better option

I don't believe carrier insurance covers the MacBook example you used? You're right that AppleCare+ didn't exist in 2006 though, but presently AppleCare+ for Macs is good insurance against accidental damage. Main point is that AppleCare is not a "rip off", it's likely misunderstood as insurance when it is simply extended warranty - perhaps Apple could do better with the naming convention.

My brother has a bad habit of leaving his phone in his pocket and throwing it in the washing machine. He has not found Apple Care + to be a ripoff because he knows he’s the type of clutz who needs it. To each their own, right? I’ve only ever broken one Apple device, and as I said above, the amount I paid to replace it is far less than what I would have paid for Apple Care + over the years. I had a Magic Keyboard go bad once for no reason and they replaced that for free. Same with my 10.5” iPad Pro that developed a faulty battery AFTER my warranty was up. They replaced that for free too. In my experience, Apple has been really reasonable about stuff like that even if you don’t buy extended coverage.

I've only gotten Apple Care for my watch, but I did pay for the insurance the store that sold me an iPad Pro offered. The insurance followed the device, so when my son inherited it and the speakers stopped working, he said it was no problem whatsoever to take it back and get a new one.

I've broken about 10 iPads / iPhones so far, usually due to drops - sometimes water damage - drop damage goes beyond just the screen with dents etc, so AppleCare+ probably paid for itself 7-8 times over for me.

One thing I've been really grateful for is the iTunes backup and restore process - the replacements work out of the box with no issues after a restore. The only annoying part is setting up an appointment with the Apple Store to actually get that replacement.

I was reading this yesterday. My IPP 11" is the first iPad I have purchased AC+. Thankfully I did, as I cracked the screen earlier today and have an appointment for tomorrow.
