I've only used it once or twice as an alarm and it worked then. I invested in a Phillips Wake Up Light recently, not because I think they are better for your sleep but I'm sensitive to sound and sleep with earplugs and then I sleep through my regular alarm so it was a good investment for me.

My iPhone has never failed to wake me up for work for about a year since I've owned the phone.

Alarm clock

I have just bought an Iphone. With my previous phones, the alarm clock worked even if the phone was switched off. That suited me because I can't sleep if there's a phone on in my room. The Iphone alarm only works if the phone is switched on. Does anyone know of an app which would allow me to turn off the phone and still get woken by the alarm? It would be sad if I had to buy an alarm clock.

Use airplane mode in the phone's settings.

No communication can get in so there will be no phone calls, e-mails, texts, or push notifications. Also, power consumption slows to a trickle.

It's nearly the same thing as having the phone off except the alarm will still work.

I've done this and it works like a charm.

i have 3 alarms set for my workday because i know ill sleep through the first and i have slept through the second, but by the third ill wake up.

My 3GS does lock up once in a while. Maybe once every other month. When this happens I either see a random reboot or a situation where I can't get the phone to wake up. A reset always solves the problem. But it goes to show that the iPhone is a computer and as such it is too complex to expect 100% reliability.

So I wouldn't use an iPhone as your sole alarm clock if you need perfect reliability. Use a regular alarm clock, which does only one task and therefore can be trusted.
