Update: My original reply stated I couldn't delete the old and just re-install it from the App Store. It turns out I could and did. Now iPhoto works under 10.10.5.

Thank you to all who suggested that resolution.
For anyone who's curious, iPhoto will also work in 10.11.x using this method too.

When I first got my 13" MacBook Pro, it had Lion or Mountain Lion on it and I upgraded to the free Maverick and really liked it. Then I made a mistake and loaded the free Yosemite upgrade and hated all of the changes so much that I went back to the Apple store and had Maverick reinstalled.

Just wondering with El Capitan would I noticed a huge difference or would everything till work and look the same and just be more efficient? Thanks.

Yep I agree with JToft it's Yosemite that works.

I will say if your MacBook is still rocking a normal hard drive instead of an SSD it may not run all that well on Yosemite or El Capitan but by al reports El Capitan is better.

OP why not create yourself a USB drive with Mavericks on it and try out El Capitan you can always reinstall Mavericks if you don't like it.

What didn’t you like in particular? El Capitan looks almost the same. It just has a couple of UI enhancements. The changes are bigger under the hood and there are performance improvements that newer devices such as yours should benefit from.

If your Macbook Pro is 2011 or later it should be faster on El Capitan than Yosemite. If you were in Yosemite I would say upgrade would likely be worth it. However compared to Mavericks its more complicated because El Capitan doesn't fix all of the Yosemite bugs.

If all the software and external devices that you need are El Capitan compatible it might be worth it. If you are not certain about compatibility its safer to stay in Mavericks for now.

Personally I think El Capitan is clearly better than Yosemite but it has more bugs than Mavericks and it isn't nowhere as reliable as 10.6.8.

Mine is Mid 2012. All I do is internet searches, chat on a few forums, and load pictures. Compared to some of the old Dell's I use to have, this thing smokes.

I guess I'll stay with Maverick for awhile since I'm of the opinion that "if it isn't broke, don't try to fix it". Thanks.

I'm still using Apple Aperture under 10.11.4 and it's stable and useful, albeit slightly slower than it was in OS 10.8.5. I never could get Mavericks or Yosemite to work well on my Mini i7 (constant freezes and crashes). El Capitan has been very solid once OS 10.11.3. My only complaint is Apple doesn't update RAW profiles very often and Aperture (Photos too) still can't open files from my nearly two-month old Canon 80D. So it's Canon's DPP for now.

What stopping me to use Aperture is the photo stream not working well. I have to enable photo stream every single time I open Aperture, and wait for it to sync the whole 1000 photos. Do you have this problem?

I don't use photo stream or iCloud. I have 7 TB of EOS RAW images from from the last 15 years divided into multiple libraries across several HD, so hundreds of thousands of RAW images trying to sync over the internet would probably take months! Besides, I rarely use my iPhone and iPad cameras. I think I took a picture of my rental car's license plate three years ago with my iPhone so I could remember it...

I don't hate El Cap but it is definitely an acquired taste. I picked up a MBA on sale at BB so my other MBAs would continue to run Mountain Lion. I can use El Cap for a certain period of time then I get one of the real Macs. Feels like going home :)

Hope you are able to resolve the issues you are experiencing. Good luck!
