you know, i have to say something about the fusion drive as it relates to my experiences on the PC side. when apple came out with the 1TB fusion drive and 128gb ssd, i remember thinking to myself, woah that's overkill. Every fusion drive on the PC at that time came with like 16gb of ssd on board. when apple cut it down to 24gb, people threw up their arms, but the PC fusion drives all cut down to 8GB instead. Difference? everybody RAVES about fusion drives on the PC side, but because of apple's cut, the mac side was filled with unhappiness and complaints.

I don't personally care either way since I go straight SSD no matter what. I just think it's funny dichotomy.
For the PC side do you mean hybrid drives? Because in my experience on the PC side the opinion on hybrid drives usually ranges from negative to maybe lukewarm. Very few rave about hybrid drives and just about any PC geek will recommend SSDs over hybrid drives.

However, if you mean true Fusion like drives with discrete SSD and HD fused through software, then I haven’t read much about that.

Dexter definitely take it back and swap for one with SSD as others say... you’ll be amazed at the performance difference for general use. Then buy a big HDD plugged in via USB3 e.g. I’ve got new iMac with 1TB SSD internal plus a 2TB HDD in a 2.5 inch case powered by the imac. Simples. It’s also a good trick for placing HDD in older macs to keep them going, where they are user replaceable drives.

I am returning the iMac tomorrow. They told me to re-order with $300 additional money to upgrade for 512SSD. Its been a crazy ride but for sure Fusion is one hell of a rip off.

Good choice on SSD at 512GB that will be plenty for the boot drive and working files (assuming you’re not a video pro user etc) and then keep rest of data on external HDD. Apple’s internal SSD is expensive relative to third parties but its v fast and not easy to replace/upgrade after.

It serves a purpose, I'd not say its a rip off, but clearly in 2018 SSD is the way to go.

I have a 2TB Fusion drive, but I'm running windows on the SSD portion and I have an external SSD for OS X.

This is from the "that'll learn ya file". Never get a Fusion Drive. It's just a cheaped up way to save $ from a pure SSD.

It is ridiculous to buy a computer with a spinning hard drive now. And it's more ridiculous that Apple Stores only stock iMacs with Fusion Drives. I had to order through Apple Online Store for my iMac with SSD despite that I live very near to an Apple Store.

What do you mean by fusion drives on PC ? I don't know anyone who does not run thier OS off a SSD, unlike Apple , SSD on PC is very cheap. I can't even think of anyone that would have a PC with a spinner , I think it's just Apple that offers spinners in 2018......it's embarrassing.

If you mean hybrid drives on PC side, they are usually viewed as junk ...... with some of the better ones regarded as okayish.... though yet again , 2018, you are getting SSD on a PC

Good choice. Fusion is okay , Apple SSD prices are actually a ripoff compared to PC side, though it's not like Apple gives us a choice to replace the device. So it's just how it is

I think the 2TB fusion is a 128GB with the rest a spinner. You should be able to split it up and put the OS on the SSD portion and your user data on the spinner partition. That should get you the best bang for your buck in terms of leveraging what a spinner offers (lots of space but slow) v SSD section (fast and small).

Why would you want to break up a Fusion boot drive for a normal user? I thought that the idea with them was that Apple’s storage algorithm keeps frequently used files tiered so they’re on the SSD and less used on the HDD. Plus it implements a write cache. Overall it makes the solution very simple for users (one logical drive) and gets the benefits of a small SSD on the boot/system/regular files. The issue is more recently with Apple being stingy on the amount of SSD on the 1TB drives (32GB) vs bigger drives (128GB). Surely splitting it up forces users to make more complex decisions about what is where plus it guarantees that files you choose to be on the HDD but access frequently are slow... I’m an SSD fan, just saying I can see the benefit of the hybrid technology.

Edit: I can think of one benefit which is on hardware failure you at least keep some data.. I previously had custom made my own Fusions drive with internal SSD & HDD in my 2008 Mac Pro. Worked great until the SSD failed as the CoreStorage logical volume was trashed across both drives.

I meant SSHD which is the same as a hybrid drive.

And you're the second person who seems to think SSHD is some dead industry. I'll just leave this here:

Number 1? SSHD.

not saying SSD isn't overtaking it, but let's not act like it's completely out of the picture.

Yep, that's what I did. I actually run Windows on the internal SSD, OS X on a Samsung T3 (thinking of upgrading that to a T5 1TB drive), and I use the spinning drive for data

Quick Update:
I went ahead and returned the iMac and once the credit was posted, I ordered 27inch iMac 5k Retina with 1TBSSD.. The schedule pickup is on January 24th. I hope I would like that as I am thinking about using the computer for at least 5 plus year. I forgot to pick up apple care but will take it at the store during pick up.
