I'd do the opposite - keep the iMac and use it only for media storage/syncing with the iPad, dump the MBP, and use the iPad for all portable needs.

There is that way too and I did think about that. But, I just upgraded the HD and memory in my MBP and think it's just a wee faster. Plus, I'm still thinking there *might* be the occasion where I'd want to take the MBP with me.

I guess that means that I'm not quite there yet on using the iPad as my one true portable...haha

I have not bought an iPad but having and iMac and iPhone and a unibody MacBook I thought about selling the MacBook and getting an iPad. However, we use the MacBook every weekend at the breakfast table to iChat or Video Skype the kids with our parents so they can see them. It is just so easy to sit on the table and turn it from person to person. And trust me I am not lobbying for the iPad to have had or get a camera for this, because on something that portable I think it would be nauseating. You would have to use the dock. Added to which I think the whole iChat thing gets old, people really don't want to look at eachother while they talk across a videochat, it's just not that appealing. We just do it because it makes the grandparents happy and gives our kids the chance to see their faces.

I ditched mine a week before release, I do not miss it at all and have no reason to keep it.

I was thinking of ditching my Black MacBook and picking up an iMac since I now longer need a laptop. I've always had laptops so it's making the decision tough to purchase a desktop.

I have an older white intel iMac that the kids use and I also use it as a bittorrent client. I have a uMBP as my personal computer. I use it as a replacement for my iMac. Not going desktop ever again as my uMbp will do exactly what my iMac can do. Having the freedom of powerhouse portibility is awesume. If I want desktop experience again, I'll buy an external display thank you very much. Desktop is so 90's.

Depends on needs/goals for it. Find a laptop with an i7-930, 9gb of RAM, 2TB of hard drive space, a 1gb video card with HDMI out and a Blu-Ray burner and let me know how much it costs. If you're wondering, $1500ish for a name-brand desktop with that plus more goodies.

I use my laptop in the same location 80% of the time, sitting on the corner of my sofa plugged to the wall. The other 20% of the time, I'm almost never doing stuff I couldn't do with an iPad.

On the mobility<--->power continuum, a desktop is at one end and the iPad is at the other, with a laptop in between.

This question makes me wonder now!

I have a i7 Windows 7 PC Desktop ( pretty powerfull ) next to it i have my 2009 15" MBP that i bought about 4 months ago ( my first Mac ever! ) and i admit, i love my Windows 7 PC for some things and my MBP for others.

Now i have a iPad ( and keep in mind a iPhone also )

I honestly think i am going to ditch the iPhone. Reason being, i dont do much internet use on it to pay ATT 30.00 a month. I make a few calls, I text and google a phone number and thats about all. The fact they are charging the SAME exact price for internet usage on a device MUCH LARGER then its size, sort of pisses me off....I honestly think they should LOWER the Iphone unlimited data plan because i think the iPad will use MUCH more data then a iphone....Yet there the same price when it comes to data charges?

My plan at the moment is this....

Windows 7 PC is used for the Media streaming to my TVs at home, Personal use and whatever else i may need.

My MBP, Hell i am still learning how to use it. I love garage band and i love a few other apps that are built in, I love the ease of use and the clean, problem free operation the MBP has. Everything just flows so smoothly it seems on the MPB.

The iPad i see myself just bringing with me to the laundry mat, in the bathroom, laying in bed, in the car,Let my son watch a movie in the car, out and about at friends house, etc...( and yeah i did say bathroom!!!!!!! ) Pretty much replacing my iphone.

I am not that mobile with my MBP really, I did think at times i should sell it and get a imac or MP but then what would be the purpose in having 2 towers? PC and MAC?

I will see how it works out, but at the moment my 60.00 Nokia is in the Mail and as soon as it arrives bye bye iphone....

The iphone is a GREAT device, but for ATT to force a 30.00 data plan on it and then have someone with a iPad ONLY pay 30.00 and use MUCH MUCH more data then me, really bugs me...

I'm having a similar thought process regarding my MacBook 13" aluminum 2.4GHz.

The main drawback in my case is that my desktop is Windows - so I'd be in the unexpected and unplanned position of being in a MacOS-free household.

Main advantage is gadget consolidation and cost savings ... there aren't hours in the day to justify a MacBook, desktop, iPad, iPod touch, Kindle and Nexus One. And I'm not all that cost-sensitive, but I'd feel better about myself if I sold some stuff to pay for the iPad, given that I could live my life just fine if I got rid of everything I just listed and dragged my old G4 tower out of the attic.

Can you breathe without a tic-tac? Sure, but I wouldn't recommend it. lol

Also, you people selling your Macbook's... thats great and all, but you probably didn't need one in the first place to even buy one. iPad can't do Photoshop, Lightroom, FTP transmission, coding, etc... Too many uses for a computer/laptop. the iPad definitely has its place though.

I'm in the same situation, except I'd need to sell my Macbook in order to purchase an iPad. Only thing is, I can't honestly get myself to sell my Macbook for $600, when I paid $1500 for it a couple of years ago. That, and the fact that there's no multi-tasking is keeping me from buying an iPad.

Getting rid of your iPhone and replacing it with a cheaper phone and iPad seems like the best idea for you. Just remember that there's a few things the iPhone can do that the iPad can't. As far as I know, there's no alarm clock, no camera, and no GPS (at least not the WiFi version). I'm sure there's a couple more things as well...

There is an alarm clock. Its an App...No camera is really the only thing. Honestly, who would want to even use this thing to take a picture? Its funny how people keep complaining about it but then fail to realize that its not exactly an ergonomically-minded camera. Who would actually carry this thing around and hold up their big square to take a picture? A webcam, on the other hand, would make perfect sense.

A front facing camera was what I was referring to. Also, since the iPad can't run background apps, if you download an Alarm Clock app, you'll have to leave the app open or else the alarm won't go off.

Where's the love for the Mac minis??? ;) I've never been a fan of iMacs but my mini has been supplementing what my MBA lacks for a couple years now and if my MBA ever dies, with the iPad I don't know if I'd replace it... I take online classes and for some reason my school's version of Blackboard doesn't let the iPhone browser paste into text boxes but that is the only thing I do away from home I can't do on my iPhone/iPad...

I can imagine myself spending more time on the iPad than my MacBook, but there's no way for it to replace it, at least not in the foreseeable future.

My MacBook was getting lonely been sitting at the end of my couch for days now. I just had an experience that made me realize I do still have some love for my MacBook LOL.

While stretching out on the couch using my iPad I just knocked the MacBook right off the couch. I felt really bad about it. The MacBook must feel really under appreciated at the moment HEHE.

I did get nervous and booted the MacBook to make sure it was ok then shut it back off and UH back to my iPad :D
