I'd do the opposite - keep the iMac and use it only for media storage/syncing with the iPad, dump the MBP, and use the iPad for all portable needs.

I have an older white intel iMac that the kids use and I also use it as a bittorrent client. I have a uMBP as my personal computer. I use it as a replacement for my iMac. Not going desktop ever again as my uMbp will do exactly what my iMac can do. Having the freedom of powerhouse portibility is awesume. If I want desktop experience again, I'll buy an external display thank you very much. Desktop is so 90's.
I'm having a similar thought process regarding my MacBook 13" aluminum 2.4GHz.
The main drawback in my case is that my desktop is Windows - so I'd be in the unexpected and unplanned position of being in a MacOS-free household.
Main advantage is gadget consolidation and cost savings ... there aren't hours in the day to justify a MacBook, desktop, iPad, iPod touch, Kindle and Nexus One. And I'm not all that cost-sensitive, but I'd feel better about myself if I sold some stuff to pay for the iPad, given that I could live my life just fine if I got rid of everything I just listed and dragged my old G4 tower out of the attic.
Getting rid of your iPhone and replacing it with a cheaper phone and iPad seems like the best idea for you. Just remember that there's a few things the iPhone can do that the iPad can't. As far as I know, there's no alarm clock, no camera, and no GPS (at least not the WiFi version). I'm sure there's a couple more things as well...This question makes me wonder now!
I have a i7 Windows 7 PC Desktop ( pretty powerfull ) next to it i have my 2009 15" MBP that i bought about 4 months ago ( my first Mac ever! ) and i admit, i love my Windows 7 PC for some things and my MBP for others.
Now i have a iPad ( and keep in mind a iPhone also )
I honestly think i am going to ditch the iPhone. Reason being, i dont do much internet use on it to pay ATT 30.00 a month. I make a few calls, I text and google a phone number and thats about all. The fact they are charging the SAME exact price for internet usage on a device MUCH LARGER then its size, sort of pisses me off....I honestly think they should LOWER the Iphone unlimited data plan because i think the iPad will use MUCH more data then a iphone....Yet there the same price when it comes to data charges?
My plan at the moment is this....
Windows 7 PC is used for the Media streaming to my TVs at home, Personal use and whatever else i may need.
My MBP, Hell i am still learning how to use it. I love garage band and i love a few other apps that are built in, I love the ease of use and the clean, problem free operation the MBP has. Everything just flows so smoothly it seems on the MPB.
The iPad i see myself just bringing with me to the laundry mat, in the bathroom, laying in bed, in the car,Let my son watch a movie in the car, out and about at friends house, etc...( and yeah i did say bathroom!!!!!!! ) Pretty much replacing my iphone.
I am not that mobile with my MBP really, I did think at times i should sell it and get a imac or MP but then what would be the purpose in having 2 towers? PC and MAC?
I will see how it works out, but at the moment my 60.00 Nokia is in the Mail and as soon as it arrives bye bye iphone....
The iphone is a GREAT device, but for ATT to force a 30.00 data plan on it and then have someone with a iPad ONLY pay 30.00 and use MUCH MUCH more data then me, really bugs me...

I think many will agree with this.iMac + iPad is the perfect combo IMO.
I can imagine myself spending more time on the iPad than my MacBook, but there's no way for it to replace it, at least not in the foreseeable future.
