So I’ve heard this phrase from patients at the office for years before I understood what they meant. Now I do and I believe we have possibly broken it twice. Never buy first gen Apple technology. And inside of the 12.9” iPad XDR there’s the new first ever Mini-LED XDR touch display and there’s the M1 chip. When the M2 chip is in full production and by all calculations at this pace. iPad Pros next year will get the M3 chip.

has anyone else heard of this what’s the vibe ?

Think that the rule applies for most things, but the changes here are quite slim compared to some of the other "1st gen".

e.g. this is iterative on a decade old product, they make a great monitor already and the M1 is just a beefy A chip (again making for a decade).

The only one thing that may be an issue for some is increased thickness, and weight, which gives me iPad 3 (1st retina iPad) vibes. But the big issue with that was quadrupling of pixels on the display, paired with a measly increase in graphics power, resulting in a crap experience. Whereas here, yes it's slightly thicker and heavier, but the pixel count is the same, and processing power is significantly being increased.

M1 is nothing new, it is simply the A14X with a different name. For the development kit, they even put the A12Z in the Mac.

The display is derived from their Pro XDR monitor, so it should be fine.
32 xdr is not mini led , classic ips :p

I think that given we don't know what new features are coming and that the display is different from the 6k XDR, it's wise to wait a couple of months unless you really need a 12.9in pro as soon as possible...
For the 11in there is no need to wait, unless you buy it on what iPadOS might be bringing.
I bought my first gen pro for the size of the screen, I did not bet on great changes do IOS, which came only 4 years later. I considered them a bonus, which I had to wait years for, not a condition. Do I regret it? No, it's probably the best iPad money ever spent

Over here
As others have said there is really nothing new in this iPad, I don't expect there to be any significant issues/concerns. But I am sure there will be something, it's electronic, it happens.

Mini-led is already in Apple's Pro display XDR, if they are defects (For example dead led), there's a warranty.

Secondly, tell me one thing that current M1 chip can't do in iPadOS currently that "possible 24-core M3" can?
We aren't comparing Intel Atom to AMD Epyc here.

Why wait you have a return window and warranty if it’s a dud. Depending where you live as well Consumer Laws if needed outside of warranty

Not worried about the M1. It is a known quantity, as are the other internal of the iPad Pro at this point (third iteration of the same design). The XDR display is actually a big departure from it's bigger brother and I'd be worried about it too. Not only is it new for Apple it is new period. Exciting, but very untested at this kind of scale.

That said, if they had the option in 11" (my preferred size) I'd prob be upgrading myself.

I have no such rule. I bought the first gen retina MBP and it was the absolute best MBP I've owned. Am I worried about this having issues? No and if I do, that's what Apple care is for

It certainly used to be that you waited on rev b. or rev c. of a new Apple product if there was a redesign. But I don't believe that is necessary anymore as everything of the last decade has been without fault.

iPad 3 burned my fingers but I’ve been ok with updates apart from that.

maybe I could see some teething issues with local dimming controls if that is new on apple, but their proXDR has LED backlighting I think (but with fewer zones) so should be OK

I find it exciting to adopt new technologies and Apple is excellent at what they do, and even if there is somehow something wrong with what you get... Warranty and/or AppleCare is there to sooth your worries.

Does it matter if it has the M1, the M3 or the M99. It will still be limited by software and no more capable than the Gen 4

Having worked in Apple Retail, I normally follow the rule of not buying something first-gen, especially when the first-gen Intel Macbook Pros hit the market. Those were painful days. Lots of issues. But I jumped at buying the M1 MBA and love the speed and battery life. Yes, there are bugs that need to be worked through, but it's not exactly a first-gen product. Apple's been creating its own in-house chips since 2010.

What is a first-gen product? Certainly the 2001 iPod and 2007 iPhone, but the M1 Macs weren't the first Macs, nor was the M1 Apple's first processor, and (almost) every refresh introduces something new.
Agreed. But other first-gen products include (not an extensive list) Intel iMac, Intel Macbook Pro, Intel Macbook, Intel MBA, Apple Watch, iPad, Intel Mac Mini, Apple TV, etc.
