I really don’t understand that reasoning, the first Air was better than the previous iPad, so even if the Air 2 fixed something you had a better device until the Air 2 came out.

Any product can have problems they fix for the next iteration but in most cases the product is still better than what was available before. So in any case you had a better device until the next iteration came out that you could switch to.
What can I say? So far my 'buy the 2nd version' rule has been working for me. Over the last few years I've been far more likely to say "glad I waited" rather than "wish I had waited".

It makes no sense though, because you can both get the latest and get the second version. That is what I do, I’ve never had that the first version is worse than what it replaced in the market, so not getting the first version means I would have been using something worse for another year. Sure things might improve a lot for the next iteration but then I just switch to that one and have the best version available at a given point in time.

The options aren’t buying first or second gen, you can get both.

Doh !
You say this in jest and I've seen you say other things in other threads similar to this in jest, and yet it seems as if you're waiting for things to not be revolutionary or risky to buy (maybe partly the reason for creating this somewhat hyperbole-driven thread). If you're waiting for them to NOT introduce new products and keep things stagnant and wait until products "mature" and work out their kinks, then you're best bet is to buy previous generations, a year or two old, and stop worrying about the latest generations and what's on the horizon! Because that's what Apple does, every year try to introduce more technology, push the boundaries, improve their product, etc.

The only thing I can say that will make a difference is that they aren't really changing an existing structure in terms of iPad functionality. The worst one I can think of is the 1st iPad and the Retina iPad.

Nope. The only time I was “done” by Apple was when I bought the Gen 3 iPad (first iPad with retina) on launch, and they released the Gen 4 6 months later
