The best thing you can do with iCloud is turn off camera roll sync. That was about 4GB for me. With Photostream my roll is automatically saved to my iPhoto anyway...its just redundant and would make a restore take hours!

I too had a paid MobileMe account so I currently have 25 GB's. But I also use Dropbox and Box is giving away free for life 50GB accounts. You have to register through the iOS app if you want it. So between all those accounts I have a total of 125GB's which for now I think serves my needs.

I'm not seeing where you get 50gb free dropbox accounts, I signed up thru the app but still only at the 2gb basic level... Am I missing something?

Not dropbox but box.net - different ones.

Box.net does not have a free desktop sync app that is as convenient as dropbox... also there is a 100MB file size limit.. so the 50GB is virtually useless for me.

The only use for additional storage right now seems to be for backups only :( unless Apple re-introduces some iDisk like thing.. but as said by Steve in the iCloud keynote, he didn't like the file system...so I think there won't be any iDisk like service anymore from Apple.

huh??

This is crap. I upgraded to iOS5 and iCloud on Day 1. By default, backup to the cloud was disabled on all my devices. I didn't even explore backup settings until finding the PC Magazine article you refer to and only then did I notice I had a choice. With default settings, I am only using 0.7gb of my allotted storage.

What is crap? When you setup iOS5 it asks you if you want to enable iCloud. If you skip that part of the setup then it's disabled... it's NOT disabled by default as you've stated, it's because of the settings you chose up front. And it's your job to read the "manual" and/or educate yourself on what the phone is capable of with the firmware that is placed on it.

I would get more gb if Apple introduced some kind of iDisk where i could store whatever. As of now i find 5 gb enough for what it is needed.

Idisk was a nightmare!! If They really gonna come out with it again, i hope they make it usable like dropbox!

I'm backing up an iPhone and an iPad to an iCloud account and still have 3.8 GB free out of 5. Turned off iDisk (since I use Dropbox now instead), Photoroll (no idea why my iPad 1, with no cameras even has a Photoroll option), but for the most part have everything else turned on for iCloud backup. Games seem to take up the most space. Anyway, it seems there are a lot of options for deleting unused backup data, 5 GB doesn't look like much of a problem so far. Even upgrading to 15 GB, if it comes to that, for $20 doesn't seem like an insane ripoff, I mean what is that, less than $2 per month?

I have a 100GB Dropbox account that I'd love to move over to iCloud so everything is in one place, but they really fulfil different objectives so I guess I'll just use iCloud for photo stream and backups and on that basis I doubt I'll need more than the free 5GB (I currently have 25GB carried over from MobileMe so I'll see how much of that I've used next year)

iWork Documents in the cloud are pretty useless until they add syncing from desktop clients: I've set up a Webdav server onto my Dropbox so I just access my iWork documents on my iPad using that

In settings, individual categories have on/off for syncing. How many of you are performing a "backup" versus just syncing?

I'm wondering if I really need to backup to iCloud, or if I should just sync.

Note that the first settings page of iCloud is for sync, and when you tap the "Storage & Backup" button at the bottom, that's where you turn backup on/off. Sync occurs in real-time, like the commercial of the person going from iPhone to iPad and it updates immediately. Backup only occurs when your phone is plugged into the wall and the homescreen is locked.

I upgraded to from 5GB to 15GB of iCloud for $20/year because I figure $20 is nothing compared to the price of the phone and how much I spend on wireless service per year. If something ever happens to my phone and I didn't back it up for $20/year, I'd be pissed.

A mere acknowledgment of Apples brilliance at making money (simply a fact) draws the ire of the faithful... Oh my how touchy. :)

How can you hate a free syncing service....guess some people will hate anything.

iCloud at the moment is slow limited. Over time, sure it'll improve.

Its a shame Apple didn't implement iCloud as a remote hard disk, like iDisk.. be more useful.

Yeah I don't get this either. Works as advertised, free, easy to set up and control what syncs where. Puzzled :/

How do you do this? I use Dropbox for everything but am getting close to my quota of free space. This would rock!

EDIT: Never mind, saw the other followup posts. Bummer, that would have been awesome!

Great... I found that Goodreader supports iCloud storage now... I am upgrading then :) 15GB seems to be enough.
