any of you have both the retina macbook and an ipad pro 9.7 or 10.5?

does it makes sense?

i use them for really easy tasks....

I have a work-issued 13" MacBook Air and a 10.5" iPad Pro. Save for one thing (albeit, it's a big thing that I do a lot during the day) the two devices are redundant. I could work all day from my iPad Pro if I had to and wouldn't miss the Mac at all.

And that's why it really depends on the individual. I really couldn't do EVERYTHING on my iPad. Almost everything, but not quite. So unfortunately, I still have to fire up the MBP every now and then. But, the vast majority of what I can do can now be done on an iPad.

I have both. And just got the Smart Keyboard for the 10.5, so most people would think they're pretty much interchangeable once iOS 11 comes out. But probably not for me. The MB gets only about 5% of the use, compared to the iPad.

I have the 2017 12.9" iPP and a fully maxed out 2015 15" MBP. I like to mostly use my iPP especialy for tasks I used to have to use my MBP for, like Affinity Photo editing. But occasionally I use my MBP when tasks are just easier than the same on the iPP. Such as, copying text for whatever reason I need to, is just easier for me on the MBP/Mouse even tho I do have a Pencil. At this point in time tho, I have no plans to replace my MBP and hoping it lasts thru its normal lifetime thru Apple Updates.

Perfect sense. I have a 2016 rMB and the new iPad Pro 10.5 and enjoy both. I'm traveling with both. iPad in hand and MacBook at the hotel.

12" Macbook and 9.7" Pro. The two complement each other very well if you can justify the expense.

Interesting question. I have both the 9.7 iPP and rMB and I’m trying to justify keeping both. With iOS 11, its amazing how much functionality iOS has now even if its just for personal use.

I have a work issued Dell laptop and as much as I don’t like Windows, it works for any business related function I may need. With iCloud.com available in almost any bowser, printing isn’t an issue and having a keyboard with my 9.7 (Magic keyboard), personal use is actually pleasant w/ the new multitasking features of iOS 11.

Now selling both and getting a maxed iPP 12.9 is a consideration but something is holding me back. Hmmmmm.....

I bought a 12" MacBook last year for university and sold my iMac and iPad Air 2. Since though I missed having an iPad and discovered my MacBook still didn't get used any more without an iPad and was mostly used for doing research or writing assignments and only used it now and again for browsing.

Bought the 10.5" and have been thinking the same thing. I think the two can complement each other well. I use the iPad now for reading magazines, electronic textbooks, reading and annotating PDFs and doing handwritten notes as well as browsing, social media and YouTube. I'lll be keeping the MacBook for at least another year to complete my university course but in the meantime will be attempting to use the iPad for more (currently have a Bluetooth keyboard for the air 2 I'm using as a trial) to see if it can fulfil all my needs with a view to potentially selling the MacBook. The thing is I still like having and using the MacBook so may end up keeping it based purely on that and the fact that I still feel like I need a traditional computer to hand. The MacBook will still probably spend much of it's life sat on the desk though but it is nice to be able to switch it on and use the connected 23" external monitor when I want more room to work..

Simply put, yes I think owning both can make sense and it's a pleasure to use both and have both to hand when required.

Yeah, if i had the 10.5" ipad pro and needed a laptop, i wouldnt get the 12" macbook. Too similar. Id go with the 13" macbook pro to complememt the ipad pro.

I have both, if i was given a one only ultimatum it would be a laptop of whatever size.
The iPad is just used for media consumption on the go, anything else i just turn to the laptop as it's more efficient was to complete my workflows.

Don't see why not. My case is that I have an Air 2 and a Dell XPS 13 laptop because I prefer/need a laptop for some things and a tablet for others. If I had to drop one, it would be the tablet, hands down.

I'm still torn

It's either get 10.5 and keep macBook Air 13 inch or get the 12.9 and sell the MacBook few months down the line depending how well I get on with using the 12.9 as my main device

Constantly changing my mind going back and forth between the 2!

MacBook Pro 13” and iPad Pro 10.5”, best of both worlds.

I think the best of both worlds is the iPad Pro 12.9" and a Macbook 12" :)

Honestly regardless of what iPad you get, I would keep your Air. I don't recommend people who currently rely on a laptop to ditch it unless they try it first for a long time.

But then the iPads not really small and mobile and it certainly can't be used comfortably in one hand - so why would you? Mini and rMB makes the most sense the more i look at it...

I don't go by the thought process such as should I own 2 devices, each one has it's own purpose in my view, I'll explain further with my own use case:

My 27" iMac is my main desktop and I love it for the very big screen and it's form factor, (although the screen is outdated now since it's the 2012 model that I don't even think is retina) it's something I use for multiple purposes, sometimes I edit podcasts watch videos, play games and so on.

My iPad Pro 12.9" is what I use along with Apple Pencil to draw, write notes, watch Netflix, record podcasts and so on, it's a great iPad.

My MacBook Pro is now old (2011) and due an upgrade but I use it for writing, and taking with me to my friends when we collaborate and record our podcasts.

You see each device has multiple uses, don't get strung up on what other people think is normal because their normal use case may be different from yours, if your happy using an iPad and a MacBook then that's cool.

Exactly.

If I had some spare cash laying around right now (I don't), I'd probably have a setup just like yours, other than the Macbook Pro. I use my iPad Pro for all podcasting now, so I don't need a laptop for that purpose, but I would love to just have a stationary iMac for the couple things where I HAVE to have a Mac and then my 10.5 Pro for the rest of my stuff.

Right now I have a Macbook Air (supplied by my employer) that mostly gets used as my desktop machine, and I only need it for conference call type stuff for work. I would love if they would switch it out with an iMac for me. Maybe next time I'm due for a switch. I have actually never loved laptops, but I am completely infatuated with my iPad Pro.
