On my 1.5GHz PowerBook G4 I get between 4 and 6fps. I used to leave them going overnight but now I can't be bothered (and the machine would get roasting hot), I've plugged the DVD player back in again and just re-borrow DVDs (sigh).

However, I'm awaiting delivery of a 2.8GHz Octo Mac Pro

bl00dy slow!!!

AppleMatt - I have to sympathise with you!

I too have a 1.5 Powerbook, with just 1Gb RAM, but I generally find much better performance using MacTheRipper.

I jut tried Handbrake again on saturday, using standard 'default' settings for a 2-hour DVD (that I own, btw!) and it finished last night - almost 48 hours!

I really need a new MacBook Pro....!
:(

For those of you with G4's you should consider using ffmpeg instead of x264. File sizes are bigger for the same quality but encodes much faster. Try a test using the Classic preset. You will be surprised how much faster it is. Also letting them go overnight shouldnt be an issue with a powerbook g4. they do not get nearly as hot as a c2d mbp. The g4 was a pretty cool running chip. I did a ton of encodes on a 17" g4 pb back in the day. Not fast. But a very sturdy machine.

2nd that!! dad has a ibook G4 1.2ghz maxed out. ripped futurama dvd's for a month straight every night. solid as. nothing as fast as any intel, but gets the job done like always, trusty PPC :)

If you have a much faster Windows machine laying around I suggest using the Windows version of Handbrake. It's a little quirky but it does give you the option to you more then one machine. I run Handbrake on my Q6600 minitower instead of my MacBook. It's a multi-platform program. Why waste processor cycles?

Make sure you rip the DVD to the hard drive first using Mactheripper. I find it usually takes 10 times longer or not at all if ripped direct from the DVD disc.

Thats probably the problem right there.

It does? News to me...

Why waste a fast computer because of the operating system? Handbrake is multi-platform. It works quite well in Windows for me. I just rip the DVD contents to my hard drive and start a queue from there. 180-200 fps for Normal or 65-80 fps for AppleTV presets isn't that bad for my Q6600 tower. ;)

OK, I misunderstood your original post. I thought you meant the Windows client allowed you to use more than one machine for an encode (clustering). You simply meant use more than one machine to do simultaneous encodes. My bad.

Sadly Handbrake doesn't support distributed processing but I have a feeling it could if you played with the source code. Not that I'll attempt it.

Keep in mind I do have two computers in my signature.

The problem lies in the fact that the libraries used by Handbrake aren't really written with distributed processing in mind. I knew there were multiple clients available, I simply misinterpreted what you had wrote.
