Hi,

I'm looking for a cable for that purpose, on an iPad Air running iOS 9. There are several really cheap cables on Amazon (and with great ratings), but it looks like they are not able to play Netflix content, for royalties reasons or something.

Having said that, and please correct me if I'm wrong, the official cable by Apple would be the only alternative. However, I'm not sure if it will play downloaded videos in the Netflix app (I read one comment in Amazon which made me doubt).

I hope you can help me clarify this questions.

Wait, what??? The HDMI cable has an impact on whether content from certain providers can be transmitted??

I’m curious now too. I’m going to Bali for a month and was going to bring a lightning to HDMI converter and an HDMI cable with me to hook my phone or ipad up to the television. I thought that would be easier than bringing an Apple TV and trying to get it working. Especially since I can run a VPN on the phone/iPad.

I use this lightweight HDMI cable for travel and it works great with my iPad (I don't use Netflix):

Only thing is to remember that it is not bi-directional - one end is marked "source", the other "TV" (why it can be made slim).

Netflix works with Chromecast. Would that suffice?

Thanks, but no. The reason I asked is because there's no net in the place I want to watch movies.

Anyway, my iPad Air runs iOS 9 and I have no intention of updating. In that scenario, I wonder if:

1) I could watch downloaded videos in the Netflix app mirroring to the TV

2) I could do that with an unofficial HDMI/Lightning adaptor

Could anybody who owns this adaptor answer me this please.

I have Netflix and the cable but I don’t have a device running iOS 9, sorry about that.

for the sake of anyone viewing this in the future, netflix does work through the official HMDI adapter, at least on iOS 11. I just tested it today and it played fine. I know that doens't answer the op's question directly, but in case someone searches this topic, it may help.

Have you come across apps that don't work? xfinity is one that blocks streaming content over HDMI from mobile devices (works from a laptop).

I pretty much only use the adapter when I'm traveling, and i haven't run across any issues where it hasn't worked, but i don't watch a ton of video to begin with. I've tried it with the TV app (downloads from the iTunes store), hulu, and now netflix. I haven't tried any other services, but so far, those have all worked.

But did you try with downloaded videos and no connection or just streaming?
