I've bought at least 10, some work and some don't.
Doesn't help when you get into a friends car that has the 1/8" aux in and you want to play music.
No I don't always carry the dongle with me.
$950 iPhone 8plus with reduced function.
This is progress?

Progress? No, I'd call that living in the past. Progress would be getting in your friend's car and connecting through a wireless connection.

I'm not going to get into a friends car and bust on them for not having bluetooth..
seems like bad form?

I don’t think you know what proprietary means...
Heh, funny! I'm told that there are companies that are now making the dongle other than apple.
When you buy them off Amazon you never know if they are going to work.
Still no one on this thread has addressed what we as Iphone users gained by the elimination of the headphone jack.

Anything with the MFI label will 100% work. Don’t just buy random crap from amazon. MFI is a certification program from Apple. To be MFI it by definition has to work.

Again, avoid Amazon because they do a pathetic job of weeding out counterfeits and falsely labeled MFI equipment.

I won’t comment on the removal of the jack because I personally don’t care.

You could also just buy the $9 adapter straight from Apple.

That's absolutely bad form. I wasn't suggesting such a thing.

I was simply commenting on the fact that you don't seem to accept the removal of the jack as "progress" because you're living in the past and want things to stay the same as they always have been. It's like someone 100 years ago saying "My horse doesn't take gasoline or have headlights. This is progress?" Yes, it IS progress old-timer.

With that said, I do acknowledge that there are genuine use cases out there for the jack. It really sucks for those people. Thankfully, I don't fall into that small group. I'm not making any judgements about your wants/needs for the jack. Just saying that, for now, this is what Apple considers "progress". I agree with them, others don't. That's fine. I doubt they'll reverse course, but I suppose anything can happen.

Progress is fine but I have yet to see any good reason for the headphone removal.
I have bluetooth speakers, headphones and a bluetooth transmitter for my car...
and for all of those purposes the headphone jack sounds better is more reliable and does not need
for the headphones to be charged! So I will say again, it is a gimmick that is not better.
The removal of the headphone jack is also making Apple millions of dollars
and is costing us consumers who have purchased a $1000 phone, headaches and an extra $100.

How is a $9 dollar plug which is included with the phone costing users an extra $100?

If you need to buy 10 0f them, and the combo with the usb for power is quite expensive.
And again I will say that the headphone jack was omitted for no good reason.

....how many goalposts you planning on shifting?

You absolutely do not NEED 10 of these adapters, and why in a thread based on that specific lightning to 3.5mm plug did you suddenly throw in the combo one?

I don’t think you’re posting in good faith at all. There are words for that but I’m not getting banned for it.

We’ve already stated repeatedly that your issue is solved by a $9 adapter.

If you need to buy 10 0f them...

Most people don't need to buy 10 of them. The free one that came with the phone is probably enough for many. So it's not really costing "us consumers" anything. You're the one that seems to have a talent for loosing them and replacing them with crappy ones that don't work. I'm not convinced your finger is pointing at the correct party responsible for your $100 loss.

And again I will say that the headphone jack was omitted for no good reason.

That's a far more interesting topic as evidenced by all the threads that have been created over the past few years on that exact topic. I'm neutral. I had moved to wireless while I still had a jack in my phone, so I wasn't sad to see it go. Some have legitimate need for the jack and that sucks for them. As for myself, I don't miss it at all. If it comes back, it comes back. If it doesn't, it doesn't. I don't care either way. I believe it's gone for good at this point and I'm fine with that.

Same boat here. Bought a 6s 128gb outright about a month after release with the idea that I’d keep it for at least 3 years. Got the Airpods delivered right before Xmas when they came out. Literally have never plugged headphones in since. With iOS 12 I’m seriously considering waiting another year on upgrading my 6s if I just throw another battery in it.

I've bought an number of other dongles only to get the message on the iPhone that the
dongle isn't compatible. How stupid is this?

Maybe it's just me but if I go out looking for a dongle made by a third party, I will check that it will work with my device first, that is done by the marketing material telling me it works.

If they say it does and it does not or even if they say "works with all smartphones" and I find out not on my iPhone 8 then my issue is not with Apple, it is with the company that sold me the item.

You should immediately run out and hire a lawyer. You can probably sue Apple for millions.

So smart of you to think of this.

I guarantee. You have a case. Get that lawyer, now.

I understand some don't need the jack.
If your bluetooth device isn't charged or had a problem then you would then have a problem
and be wondering why they got rid of it.

I appreciate your advice, I think you may just be kidding.

There have been occasions when my headphones haven't been charged. It's annoying and 100% my fault. I've never once questioned their motives for the jack removal. I'd rather wait for them to charge then deal with wires anyway, so the jack still isn't part of the equation for me. Nothing I ever do is so important it can't wait for a short time.

The other thing I wonder about is how safe is it to have a radio that close to your head?
I use my bluetooth headset once in a while but think the regular phones sound better and you don't have to charge them.

Bluetooth against your head is probably far less dangerous that the actual cell phone.

Yeah, probably but splitting hairs. I don't know if it matters but I don't hold my phone against my head.
I use the speakerphone whenever possible.
I don't understand how people just assume that this technology is safe.
I have bluetooth headphones but use them rarely.
Hell they even talk about your router being on at night effecting your sleep.
I think its why all the 20 and 30 year olds are weak and puny.

Did you intentionally ignore the worlds top athletes in sports such as the NFL, Rugby, UFC, boxing, etc etc to come to that logic defying conclusion?

While not true I feel its more accurate to say many 20 and 30 year olds are weak and puny because they are afraid of everything potentially harmful....things like bluetooth and cell phone radiation for example.....

No, I wasn't talking about athletes but the general populace..older americans as well.
They all bought into the low fat High carb paradigm, and are fat and sick.
Its fine if you want to believe that bluetooth and cell phones next to your head are safe.
