Not really surprising...again, remember the target demographic for the iPad. Most of the members on this forum are "super-users" by Apple's demographic labels.

Errrrrr. Seems like you are contradicting yourself there. First you infer that the "target demographic," are computer illiterate, or something like that then you note that member of MR (who a substantial number own iPads) are "super-users." Then again, maybe you are suggesting MR members are "above" owning an iPad.

I didn't have a problem understanding the super-user point. For the most part we are tech enthusiasts here. If you were new to apple and not a tech person, plus being faced with all the derision in the media and from the jealous, of course your anxiety/vigilance levels are going to be a little higher. Meaning you're already half-waiting for something to go wrong, and to jump on it. Then narrow it down by the personality type who is prone to freaking out and screaming at store clerks in the first place...and yeah, this was probably inevitable for x percentage of buyers.

I didn't realize there was a whole thread dedicated to this issue. But yes, as I unpacked my brand new iPad (which I unexpectedly purchased just yesterday), I immediately had to make certain that my screen wasn't scratched. This was probably not the best choice for the wallpaper....

Took my mother who's in her 60s to look at an iPad to see if it was something shed want.

She was absolutely convinced the screen was scratched, took several rotates to prove otherwise.

WOW aren't people arent that smart. First note the stars are on the box and iPad. Second when to screen flips the stars move. And third if you think it is a scratch why when you open an app or change the wallpaper do they go away.

When I bought my first iPod touch I was convinced there was a scratch on the screen, right through the little white Apple logo...until I later realised...

(hangs head in shame)

Yes, returning it because of the stars seems silly. Remember we're talking about a scale of one per hour at the flagship NYC store. So it's not a big percentage. I'd imagine on the order of 0.1%.

If 1 in every hour amounts to 0.1%, than they sell a thousand iPads an hour. That would be 17 per minutes. I have been to Apple stores in NYC and elsewhere in the world, but I haven't seen any store that can handle that many. How many cash registers do you need to handle so much volume? When I purchase a computer from the store, I spend well over a minute just with the payment.

Is there any Apple Store with 50 checkout points and with a large storage room to keep the customers in?

It is a pretty bad choice for default wallpaper. For some reason Apple includes lousy wallpaper with mobile devices. Kind of odd because I like the wallpaper for leopard and snow leopard a lot.

They're not just scratches. They're magical and revolutionary scratches that move when you rotate the screen. A lot of R&D went into those. :D

LOL! I didn't realize this was messing people up. I love the star trails! I shoot them all the time...in fact, had to look closely to make sure it wasn't my photo:
Seems I've got a few badly scratched photos myself...:p

No I mean exactly what I said, no contradictions:

Not really surprising...again, remember the target demographic for the iPad. Most of the members on this forum are "super-users" by Apple's demographic labels.

1) Apple's target demographics for the iPad weren't highly-technical users. I am not inferring a lack of sophistication for ALL iPad users, just that the target demographic was not a "super user" by technical standards.
2) Most members of this forum are "super-users" in that they are far more technically literate than the rank and file iPad target demographics. And from reading posts, far more demanding as well when it comes to knowing anything and everything about their devices.

There was no insult meant. On the contrary, most users on this forum would know it was a wallpaper and just adjust it. Many iPad buyers who have never heard of this forum and have no idea about such things as wallpapers would freak out and return it thinking it was a screen issue.

In other words...what Gwynne said right after your post.

That is hysterical. For about 2 seconds I was worried that my iPad may be scratched due to the wallpaper that was the default. After the initial shock I looked more closely and realized it was part of the wallpaper itself and not a defect in he iPad.

its amazing how dumb some people can be, especially when the photo on the box has the same wallpaper

This story just goes to show what demographic Apple is targeting with the iPad. When talking with patients, the doctor should always talk to them as if they have a 5th grade education (unless he or she knows them very well, of course). I have to applaud Jobs in realizing this and making a product with the assumption its user has a 5th grade education.

lol. It would be interesting to see iPad buyer demographics. Education and income. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the affluent and educated were overrepresented in Apple Store lines on Friday.
