I love old movies and the Internet Archive has them -- FREE. I stream them through my Ipad 3 to my Sony HDTV and they look great. While I have netflix on my jailbroken ATV2, I sometimes stream a Netflix movie through my Ipad which sometimes seems to have less buffering. There are some great free XXX sites via the Ipad that look even hotter streamed to the BIG screen. I shoot stills and video with the camera and it's fun to watch them streamed. Look, it's another option. I can't figure out why the OP has doubts, use it or don't. with ML and our Imacs and MBP it should be even more of an option.:)

I use AirPlay for music listening and parties. I have my Apple TV hooked up to my receiver. Many of my friends have iPhones and I give some of them my wifi password. When we're all gathered we can play music or put up pictures from anyone's phone. It's also nice that one friend can play music while another (or many) is putting up pictures. The pictures tend to get a little more fun as the night goes on.

I can also watch TV and play music through Apple TV. Apple TV to the receiver. Set the receiver to the Apple TV input for the sound. Plug the cable box in directly to the TV via component -- video only. Change the input on the TV to the component setting. Now you have Apple TV sound through speakers and the TV picture. Your friends can also play songs.

Also run the cable box HDMI through the receiver for when you want sound and picture from the TV without Apple TV.

I airplay Pandora and Sirius radio like it is nobodies business. To me, it's the single best thing about the Apple TV and airplay.

Hmm... no wonder Apple wants to release their own simplified TV. Trying to understand all you just said gives me a headache, haha. I'm bad with this stuff

So I currently have a TV and a cable box. I'm wanting to buy an Apple TV and surround sound speakers for my tv. I assume my ATV will be hooked up to my TV through an HDMI cable but will my speakers will be hooked up to my cable box or to my TV? Will it be possible to AirPlay my iPhone to my speakers through my ATV with my TV turned off or would I need to directly connect my speakers to my ATV for that to work (and then switch it back to listen to surround sound from my tv)?

I sometimes browse my movie library on the iPad through home sharing to find something to watch, those times I'd like to be able to just press play instead of having to put it away, pick up the remote, find the movie and hitting play.

You can do this with the remote app. In the remote app select the iTunes library you want to play the movie from, this will bring up all the movies you have in that library then hit play on the one you want. It should being streaming on your appleTV...

Here is the link to the app:

http://itunes.apple.com/app/remote/id284417350?mt=8

Its free to :)

Currently AirPlaying the second album of a group of my friends band. Money in the Banana Stand, iTunes it.

Often what I'll use AirPlay for is in connection with Air Video. If you have any videos on your computers hard drive, it allows your iOS device to see them, convert them if necessary, and stream them to the AppleTV. Very convenient.

Also netflix on such a small, quiet, easy to use, device is great. AirPlay ftw!

Thanks, I have it already. I like browsing movies in the Home Sharing thing, because of the cover art view and meta data... But you can't have it all, I guess ;)

Isn't that more a feature of the Apple TV than of AirPlay? Can't you play any movie purchased through iTunes automatically on your Apple TV and play any movie uploaded into iTunes through home sharing (assuming your Mac is open, running iTunes)??

You can airplay from your iTunes as well. start a video and then click the Airplay button. Essentially it's the same thing as sharing.

I don't think it is possible unless you add a receiver in to the mix. Running anything through your TV will require your TV to be on and the input set to the proper device to hear anything.

Great for watching movies stored on iTunes and I stream segments from attack of the show on g4 to my Atv every day. Also any long YouTube videos are better to watch on the tv.

Then there is youporn...

Ahhh porn... What the internet was created for.

I have an ATV and have enjoyed using it with my iPad. My brother in law just got an ATV but only has an iPhone 4S to work with. What are some good games and apps that he can try out on the new setup.

Being able to share pictures, music, videos, and websites on my living room TV, whenever I have friends and family over, is well worth having the ability to do so, even if it doesn't happen very frequently. And as another poster said, those who come over and own iPhones love that they can just AirPlay their content on my TV with such ease.

And whenever I'm not hosting get-togethers and showing off my AppleTV, I mostly use it to watch Netflix, HQ YouTube videos (just watched the 2007 iPhone Keynote a couple days ago for the first time!), and it's how I play all of my music through my surround sound system. I usually just whip out my iPhone, pick a song, and AirPlay it. I hardly ever stream music from my iMac since its all in my iPhone anyway. I am also very much looking forward to the Mountain Lion AirPlay update.

All in all, for $99 you're getting an incredible piece of tech. I would happily pay twice as much just for AirPlay. Everything else is just a bonus. I say BUY ONE. No Apple collection is complete without it. :)

I use airplay everyday mainly for music since my atv3 is plugged via my theater system, i dont even need to turn on the tv, i just turn on my theater system choose hdmi1 press the airplay icon on my idevices and voila! My ipad is basically my remote control but with the content in it! Since all the videos i watch are from itunes i dont really need to airplay them since they are already stored on icould, so i stream them! Mirroring is another function that could be useful at time.

I definitely agree that ML will increase AirPlays utility many times over, because I will actually be able to use the large screen and not worry about where my fingers are. Heck I could maybe even use clamshell mode with an external keyboard

^^Yea I see this as increasing my airplay use dramatically,

I have my iTunes library or Pandora air playing all the time using airfoil so this is number one for me, and sharing photos, but also they are available through photo stream..so not all ways necessary to airplay. The first thing my mother wants to do now when visiting now is to sit on the couch and see what my family has been up to by checking out our month to month photo stream..

+1^^

I use it daily. Mostly for music. I'll stream whatever it is I am listening to. Often music files or radio stations via IHeartradio or a similar app. At least twice a week I am watching movie via airplay. It is great.

I've been using Airplay mainly to stream youtube videos to my TV. I don't need to stream music from my ipad/iphone because I have iTunes match on the ATV. Aside from that when I have guests over and they want to show me pictures, etc. then they can just airplay it to the ATV.

It's one of those features that even if you don't use it often than it's still great to have for those occasions where you would just rather watch/see it on a bigger screen.

Just out of curiosity, do you search/play YouTube videos on your iPhone first and then AirPlay them to your AppleTV, or do you actually go into the YouTube app on the AppleTV? I, myself, find it easier to go that route as opposed to using the YouTube on AppleTV.

I search using my iPad/iPhone then AirPlay to the apple tv. Just easier that way.

Let's not forget the social aspect of Apple TV. Your guests can also stream content to your TV from their devices. (Provided you grant them access of course. I do, with a guest network.)

I've occasionally had some impromptu youtube parties. It starts with a friend wanting to show you an hilarious faceplant video. Before you know it, the evening is gone.

I've had plenty of those parties!

I can't believe there are people who have Macs and iOS devices and still hesitate to get the Apple TV.

I use airplay all the time, i always take my atv on holiday & my ipad for watching films. I use it at home for airplaying music from my computer to my atv which is connected to the house sound system & control it all via my ipad using remote.

Also waiting for Mountain Lion as per above :D

I use AirPlay for:

1. FaceTime - it's epic

2. Movies - it's nice

3. Photo sharing - happens a lot with my family

4. Photo games - it's funnier to see everyone's reaction on the big screen (ugly meter, photo age, etc)

5. Presentations and demos

What I don't use AirPlay for:

A. Music - I have separate iPod sound system for that

B. YouTube - apple tv already has that
