Two months ago my original iPad Air really began to show it’s age. In the middle of a presentation everything had to reload and it took far longer than than I was comfortable with to respond. Thus, I’m in the market for a new iPad and I’m looking at the 12,9.

The problem is we’re close to a possible upgrade and I would hate to spend so much money on a product that will essentially be a year old shortly after purchase. I’ve waited for a possible announcement in September and nothing came to fruition (I know the September event was not a likely announcement date). But October seems plausible. I’m to the point now that I cannot wait any longer. I’ve been borrowing the wife’s iPad for long enough.

Today I decided that I can order the 2018 IPP with minimal risk. It will arrive here on the 17th. Given Apple’s 14 day return policy I figure that I can always return it if a new iPad is announced this month. I think it’s highly unlikely that one gets announced in 2019 if it doesn’t happen in October.

My only question now is if I’ll prefer the 12,9 after using it or want to go for an 11.

Latest info says there wont be any new iPad Pro’s until early 2020.

Let‘s see if they send out invites on Thursday. If not I’m pretty much “forced” to buy the 2018 model. iPad Air doesn’t get updates anymore and I’m desperately in need for a new tablet with pencil support for my upcoming semester... 😣

TSMC or some Chinese leaker would have posted by now if there was any production of an A13X 7nm+ CPU and there has been None. Also TSMC has no more room to make anymore chips.
unless Samsung or Global Foundaries is making them in which case I don’t want it.
Or people who make a living off reading every line of iOS Code would have seen reference to a new CPU again there has been none.

I get your point OP, waiting / taking advantage of the return policy is a good way to go.

However, even a year old iPad Pro will serve you well, so you can't lose! Keep us updated

There are deals about that knock a good chunk off the price, or else Apple's own refurbished store offers ~15% off - if you can snag one for less than full price it might take the sting off of getting a model in the latter part of it's cycle? Once it's in your hands, I doubt you'll look back with regret unless you really want a ToF 3D camera? The A12X is still a monstrous performer, even if the A13X is the usual ~20% faster, you're very unlikely to notice it given there's nothing in the App store that even realistically taxes the previous gen's A10X yet!

I’m still rooting for a fall update. There were news of Apple registering new iPads running iPadOS 13 in the Eurasian database in July. Seems weird to register them almost one year ahead. I think this process has proven reliable in the past for imminent iPad and iPhone updates.

Just thought I’d give a quick update.

I got the 12,9 Pro one week ago. My first thought was that the 12,9 was a little big, but I adjusted to the size within a day and I cannot imagine going back to a smaller iPad at this point.

I was hoping for an update this fall, even for just a spec bump, but it’s appears highly unlikely at this point. That being said, the iPad has been phenomenal. It’s super smooth and has more than handled everything I’ve thrown at it. I will have no regrets if they release a new one soon. The one thing I have yet to fully test is a good graphic design program. I’m about to pull the trigger on Affinity Designer.

My only complaint is the one bright spotlight on the edge of the screen. I’m going to exchange it this weekend.

One more thing...this iPad has nearly replaced my laptop. I’m moving from a 2013 15 MBP. The iPad is way lighter than the MBP and honestly just more fun to use. The one major thing holding me back from not replacing my laptop or Mac Mini completely is the lack of a good web development environment. I’d love an app that gives a full LAMP stack and editor. If I’ve missed one let me know.

Thanks everyone!

I would be happy with a spec bump via pree release. A13X CPU, 6 GB RAM across the board, internal chassis reinforcement or higher strength aluminum alloy. No other changes necessary. Same camera, same storage, same accessories, same price points.

Not happening. Apple hasn’t updated the iPad pros yearly ever. They’re very clearly on a longer cycle given how much time, r&d, and money went into the development of the 2018 Models. You don’t just eclipse that in a year.

The 1st and 2nd Gen are visually very similar if I’m not mistaken, it was just a spec bump and the 9.7” being replaced with the 10.5”. I could see the 4th Gen using the 3rd Gen chassis but being a spec bump, but at the same time I don’t see it happening until Spring at least.

Apple revolutionised ipad with the 3rd generation iPad and the response and enthusiasm from tech world, media etc is only just beginning to dip. I think apple are comfortable drinking all this praise in and in no hurry to release its replacement just yet, at least not in 2019. They’re kinda proud of the 3rd gen imo.

They may do a quiet hardware refresh, for example the A13x

The March iPad update is incremental to begin with, with the major change being the TOF camera and sturdier chassis along with a spec bump. If they refresh the ipad pro with just a spec bump, there would hardly be anything left to talk about in March. The iPad has no competition so its not like they are being forced into refreshing it. My guess is nothing happens until March with avaibility in April.

This was a Mistake we are 6 months away from a new iPad Pro. That being said the best time to buy a new iPad Pro is on Launch day. What’s gonna happen now ? As I stated in Oct 2018

2019 No new iPad Pro
2020 Early, Spec bump minimal insignificant update.
2021 October new 5nm CPU, new 4K 120Hz OLED ProMotion 6GB new LPDDR5 Samsung RAM (Apple’s already placed a giant Order and taken up all the production Capacity)

FYI, Dont buy a new phone or iPad without this new RAM in 2020 or 2021.

IPad 3 to IPad 4 transition would like a word with you...
