Is heif better than jpeg? I have always used the standard jpeg option instead of heif. Are there any benefits to switching to it? I guess I’m just worried that if I need to email a picture to myself, the heif format isn’t support everywhere.
When it comes to image quality I dont thing its better, the only thing better is that HEIF has a smaller file size but only by a few mb. So if I take a photo with JPEG Max the size is around 9-10mb and with HEIF Max it's around 6mb. The good thing with JPEG is that it is better supported by various applications and with windows. HEIF works best with apple devices. So if you email a picture to yourself JPEG might be better.

What's the difference between regular HEIF and HEIF Max? Is HEIF Max a new version of HEIF that is more advanced?

HEIF Max is 48mp
That sentence doesn't make any sense.

That would like be like saying "AVC is 10MBPS and HEVC is 15MBPS."

I am asking about the specific technology.

The difference between HEIC and HEIC Max.

Sounds like there isn't any.

I mean..I answered your question. If you wanted to know more about the specific tech then maybe you should have rephrased your question as such.

You asked for the difference. HEIF shoots in 12mp or 24mp, HEIF Max shoots in 48mp. That’s it….thats the difference.

Now that you understand my question is about the technology, do you have an actual answer?

Seems like the answer is no. There is no difference. Same technology, they just added a "Max" to it, denoting that it's 48MP.

Apple unlocked taking of 48mpix high res HEIF photos and called an option to enable it, in typical Apple fashion, "HEIF Max" - which everyone, in this topic at least, was ok with, and only you misunderstood for some advanced version of HEIF image format. Are you going to continue arguing about something only you had trouble understanding correctly in the first place?

HEIF is HEIF Max or no Max, HEIF Max is just the 48MP Raw file compressed to a smaller file size in HEIF format thats all.

HEIF Max adds a half-second or so shutter delay after every photo.... even when shooting Ultrawide or Telephoto (or 2x mode) where you are physically limited to 12MP. Anyone else annoyed by that? I'd prefer to just keep it on all the time.

Is it worthwhile to default to HEIF, rather than JPG, here in 2023 - now that HEIF has been out for 5+ years?

What have the pain-points (applications) been, that you've come across, when sticking with HEIF default?

Never had a single problem due to using HEIF format.
Also - you don't want your videos to be recorded in h264 in 2023, and it's an option that cannot be set separately, you either use modern or legacy formats for both images and videos.

It sounds like the HEIF MAX setting is specifically for the 1X lens.
But it stays enabled in other modes.
Does having the HEIF MAX setting enabled for ultra-wide lens or telephoto actually do anything?

Am I wrong or did Apple say you get more dynamic range with 24mp? Struggling with which mode to roll with for day to day use. Sounds like Apple recommends 24mp.

Wondering; Is it better to shoot

Just got this from the competition's website...

“You get a little bit more dynamic range in the 24-megapixel photos,” McCormack explains. “Because when shooting at 24-megapixels, we shoot 12 high and 12 low — we actually shoot multiple of those — and we pick and then merge. There is, basically, a bigger bracket between the 12 high and the 12 low. Then, the 48 is an ‘extended dynamic range,’ versus ‘high dynamic range,’ which basically just limits the amount of processing. Because just in the little bit of processing time available [in the 24 megapixel] we can get a bit more dynamic range into Deep Fusion. So what you end up with in the 24, it’s a bit of a ‘Goldilocks moment’ of you get all of the extra dynamic range that comes from the 12 and the detail transfer that comes in from the 48.”

I probably would if only Apple didn't software lock 14 Pro out of it, even thought it's the same hardware as basic 15 which has it.
It's one of the worst supported phones out there…

They need to give you a reason to buy the latest and the greatest.
That's why don't put all their technology in the next new iPhone. Cause they need to save stuff to put in the one after.

Hello! This is exciting, but I'm curious... why does it say "Up to 48mp". Is this dependent on the lens you're using? Or will the main 48mp camera reduce in mp depending on lighting situation?
Not sure if you got an answer already, but I noticed that my iPhone sometimes won’t shoot in HEIF Max all the time with the main lens. I guess it depends on how fast you take the shot and how steady your hand is, and if the camera needs multiple processing then it will default to 12MP instead of 48MP

I'm experimenting with the different file options in my 15P. After shooting, how do I find out the MP number for a photo in the Photos app?

From everything I'm reading, it seems HEIF max (48MP) is the way to go when shooting outdoors with plenty of light. But for shooting indoors and most other situations, best leave it at 24MP so you can benefit from pixel binning and the noise reduction.

All they give me is the reason to stay another year with my 14Pro and wait for even more new features on 16Pro (or, perhaps, on regular 16?), cause I can be sure, 15Pro won't get most of them, even if it could.
If we pay those egregious prices for these "Pro" phones, we should get the pro treatment.
