Cos I'm nice, I found more details about Ubuntu for you.

http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop

It's a 'liveCD' meaning that you can reboot your computer with the CD and it won't touch any of your files.

The web page has a brief intro/ description.

Download link is at bottom of the page. Just download the CD image, burn it onto CD, check it works (try it out on any known working computer) then try it out on your laptop.

If it boots, you can then access your HD and save any important files to external storage (CD / DVD/ USB). After that, a full reinstall of OSX will be needed.

It seems that the Ubuntu LiveCD will work on any computer, PC or Mac. (correct me please if I'm wrong - the Ubuntu website isn't clear on this)

1. Use the install CD and choose "Archive and Install". After you get them, re-load a fresh OS.

2. Find a Mac, any Mac. Get a firewire cable and do the target disk mode to try to get your files. When you do the search and see lots but not the files you need, do a search for invisible items called ".trash". You can also do this search in TDM...

3. Learn from this. Why the f*%$ didn't you have backups?? <|

I tried several times to get my iBook to book into knoppix before but it wouldn't. I don't know if you can get macs to boot into linux. I tried Knoppix 3.7

Nothing worked, my only option was to erase & install. Live & learn.

Sesshi - I understand you're frustrated with the lack of judgement here, but gah, imagine how I feel! Yes, I'm kicking myself. No, I don't need to read why you think novices who make 'mistakes' are idiots. Please do that person a favor.. try and refrain from writing it the next time you see a thread that aggravates you. kthx. :D

When you create more 'embarassing' content, let us know, and we'll mirror it for you, then next time you hose your machine by, I don't know, dunking your power connector into your dog's waterbowl :D or something, we can send it back to you...

I worked as a PC technician for 5 years, and when I brought my powerbook last year, I trashed the filesystem no less than 3 times trying to work out how to set it up :) (had everything on backup tho..)

Wow, ty yojitani for the in depth advice. :) What do you mean password? The only security password I had was through WEP. Again, if a hacker *did* get through that, could he access my files even if sharing was off?

OK. Here's how it works. For a hacker to get to your files, she would have to first join your network (so, work out your WEP password etc.). Then, once on your network she would have to know your user profile's password or your computer's admin password to get to your files.

Your computer will always show up under Network->servers and since you are you accessing from you :)) ), your computer won't ask you for a password. If you want to access someone elses computer, it will usually show up under 'Network'.

See, here is my computer under servers. You can also see my powerbook under network:

And then, if I want to connect to the PB, this is what happens:

Sorry the archive and install didn't work. I had my doubts because it wouldn't be able to see anything to archive since you put your system in the trash.
