If you're still looking for a leopard disk I have an original I could rip to iso for you

The PPC iMac I wanted to buy got sold right in front of me. I messaged the seller about coming and picking it up, we wrote back and forth about when it'd be an appropriate time, and bam! He took down the page and I couldn't get in touch with him anymore, so I sadly no longer need a PPC copy of OS X. At least unless I find a similar deal, but other deals I'm looking at include original software discs.

Wait... WHAT?!

Incidentally, do they also make Mac OS X Server Tiger PPC available for paid developers?! I was going to make a paid developer account near the end of the year, but oh man, I need to know if they got Server Tiger PPC (universal won't do -- it lacks Classic! And no need for those stupid fat binaries...).

It's on there alright.

Digital download, whether from Macintosh Garden or Apple Developer / App Store, is simply no substitute for having a retail copy complete in the original box. It's a shame Apple and other software vendors no longer sell software in physical boxes with box art, but it's still fun to collect the older versions (< 10.7) when they appear on occasion for a decent price.

I've got Snow Leopard, Leopard Server (installed on my Power Mac G5 and immediately liked it more than Apple's current Server app, a shame it's too old to be usable), and Leopard sitting on my desk, with Tiger hopefully soon to join them. :)

Aah, it's certainly a lot sexier and more gratifying to actually own the whole packaging and physical medium of all the stuff, I agree, but I personally care solely about the data. If you get i.e. Server Tiger PPC's disc, rip it and its checksum is absolutely the exact same as the image Apple provides (other sources I'd be more skeptical about, even with an equal checksum, depending on the checksum type, like CRC32), then, to me and me only, it makes absolutely no difference. I actually prefer it that way, to save space.

Still, I agree, it's a shame that direction which software took. Now games don't come even with their printed booklets! (And not because they care about trees or anything: it's all about getting the fattest pocket, even if at the expense of the buyer.)

I agree with making backup images of the disks, and even using the backups when an OS install is needed to minimize the amount of wear on the original disks, the contents of your drive afterward are the same either way. But in terms of the physical space the boxed OS takes up, it's really not enough to complain about IMHO, especially with the 2006 slim-box release of Tiger and later versions.
