When I first got a 27 inch, yes, it was too big. In fact, it gave me neck strain, back ache, and a horrible headache that made me throw up. This was no good because I have to work on it. Well, I figured out this was more an issue of the height of the screen than its size. I had to look up at it all the time and that put a strain on my neck. So, my solution was to get a monitor arm and a VESA adapter. That allows me to lower the monitor so the bottom edge is almost touching the desk, and I will be looking down at the screen work area rather than look up at it. Now I can work on my Mac comfortably with no physical problem at all.

Well this is not the first time an owner of a 27-incher has reported this. I have to say this: I do find it interesting that people accept these kinds of symptoms with open arms, but when there is a bit of yellow on the screen that a normal user would not even see in normal use, all hell breaks loose and everything is Apple's fault. Yes, I do know that some if not most of you have so severe yellow tint issue that it is visible in normal use. Yes, I know some of you are professional photo editors and need a perfect display. And yes, Apple should not have these kinds of problems.

I just sometimes wonder about the perspective that people have when they say even a 50" screen on the desk would not be an overkill. :D

Help: I am finding the 27" too big !!

I am 5'4" and agree that this is one of the biggest issues but not perhaps the only one and I do not want to have to use a monitor arm.
I am also within the 14 days so might be able to exchange it for the 21" which will still be slightly bigger than my old one.
I do need to be able to use the computer for work but do not necessarily need the 27" for the function .. I may however need the i5 quad for the power
I am glad to hear I am not alone with this issue .. Thank you.

I have the 27" Quad Core i5 iMac, and the screens appears smaller the longer I own it.

Would I consider buying another iMac with a smaller screen? Hell, no! I'd rather get a second 27" display or an even bigger iMac.

I was the same way a few years back when I switched to 24 inch monitors from 22 inches. They seemed HUGE!

Even today friends of mine walk in and see my 24 inch monitor and 22 inch monitor on my desk and say things like "Wow! You'll never need a bigger monitor!"

Then I open up either Maya, Unity or XCode...then suddenly things don't seem so big anymore...

...Hence my dual 27inches that are on their way :D

I think it is the switch to LED myself for some people. I got sick looking at my macbook pro and 24 inch ACD when I got them but after a few weeks it went away and I love the LED screens.

I second this! I have had my 27" i5 iMac for a little over three weeks now and it seems small to me.. it used to seem big. I wouldn't ever go smaller now!

First got my 27" iMac, I thought it was HUGE...coming from my old G4 with 17" monitor....within a week I got used to it and now its perfect!!!

As soon as you return your 27" for the 21.5".....your gonna say...WTF was I thinking...I want the 27" back!!!!

Just give it some time!!!!

Sell it, get a 21... you might say to yourself this is really small, take it back/sell it and get the 27. Give it a little time you may adapt.

Help: I am finding the 27" too big !!

I love the idea of 27" and the i5 quad is perfect for me .. I do not however love the idea of suffering motion sickness and other symptoms while trying to work and I cannot manage to sit 3' away and still be able to function
I have under the circumstances been given a two week extension on my return policy from the Apple Store so I can decide and they have also agreed to wave the restocking fee .. I do wish the Apple Store carried the 21" i5 as I really hate the idea of having one shipped
Thank you to all who have taken the time to comment .. I hope to hear from many more of you while I am trying to decide .. Thank you again :)

Had my 27 inch for 3 days, am also struggling with the screen, I have it quite far back on my desk and find myself zooming in or leaning forward an awful lot.

Tried changing the resolution but the point ofnbuying 27 inch is kind of missed.

Hopefully get used to it.

I would love to hear how you get on .. I would also recommend you contact Apple :apple:

Dammit!
You are making me feel unsure.
I have been convinced here that the 27" was the best option. 2 days ago I went to buy one but they where out of stock so I reserved one. Im going next week... now I do not know what to do since now I have a 17" iMac! I have around 70 cm (around 24") of space between my eyes and the screen, will that be enough?
Thanks and keep us updated.

I had the 27" for a week and got rid of that huge honker and went to a new 21.5 and could not be more happy. The 27" is not for everyone, there is a lot of ego going on here!

I really appreciate the screen real estate when working with multiple documents and developing with XCode. At work, I use a dual monitor setup in WinXP but I prefer working with my 27" iMac as a single big screen feels more "natural". That's just me, though... ;)

I switched down from a 27" to a 21.5", and haven't had any regrets. You can "get used to" just about anything, but why should you? In my case it came down to realizing that the 27" was just not working for me. Sure, the extra pixels helped when doing photo editing, but it was too large for me to comfortably work on for hours on end.

I'm with W.C. Fields´on this one:
"If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then quit. No use being a damn fool about it."

In this case, you shouldn't let anyone decide for you - it's your eyes and your body.

it took me a day or so to get used to bigger screen. I quickly realized I don't have to fill the whole screen with a single page, and that I can quickly increase font size if needed. I also did push the screen back a bit, and that helped as well. I turned the brightness down a lot, and that helped the most.

Hope your able to work the issues out with yours.

there is a lot of ego going on here!
Just because the 27 was not right for you doesn't mean it's not right for some people. I personally love the space on the 27 to open two docs side by side with pages bigger than 8.5x11. To imply this is just an ego issue ironically says a lot about your ego :D

Took me a day or 2 of really using it (6-8 hrs a day)to get used to it, now I love it cant stand anything smaller.( Even our older 24" Imac)

I came very close to getting the 21.5 because I was concerned about eye strain from the larger screen, brightness, smaller resolution, etc. On the recent Tax-Free holiday in NC I went to the Apple Store to get the 21.5 and they had just received (that day) the 27" i7 Quad Core for the first time as a in-store stocked item so I couldn't resist and haven't looked back.

I really love this computer and having upgraded from a iMac 20" G5 the performance difference is amazing! I do a lot of web programming and for coding I set up a second display (Samsung T220 Matt) in case the glossy display would be a problem but I've found that I don't use it too much.

The thing that mad a HUGE difference for me on the 27" was to get the iPAD desktop photo and use that instead of the purple default Apple background. That default background is way too strong for me and I would see purple spots and stuff after looking at it. This iPAD background is great looking and MUCH easier on the eyes IMO. You can get it here...

Other than that there are a few times when I need to make the text larger on some websites so I just use the CMD+ when needed and I adjusted the font size in Mac Mail to my liking. I wouldn't want to go to a 21.5 now, after 6 weeks I'm completely used to the 27. I'm sitting approx. 30" and brightness is a few clicks over half-way.

I was very nervous about getting the 27" iMac in the beginning. For the last 10 years I've used basically the 13" macbook, 17" LCD Monitor, a 10" netbook, or my ipod Touch.

When setting up the iMac I thought it was way too big, but I adjusted so quickly to it by the next day it was just perfect. Easily the best LCD screen I've ever owned.

Don't get me wrong the 21" is a great size too and would have been perfect, sure the 27" is a bit overkill for my needs but the small price difference was worth it to me. I keep it about 2-3 feet away from me. Brightness turned down, text is very readable, even when my eyes are tired.

The only downside I have with it, it is very huge on the desk (it's a desk from the 80's) so I don't have as much space as before. Plus the USB ports are a pain to get to when I need to change things so I just use a USB extension in one of the ports for hot swapping anything I need.

iread,

I doubt YOUR physical size has anything got to do with it. I'm about your size and my 27" sits <2ft in front of me with no complains. Have you tried firing up a 1080p film? Any problems watching the HD goodness? I'm coming from a 20" HP Touchscreen. The sudden extra 7" of glory did me no discomfort, in fact it made me feel MORE OF A MAN.... :p

2 nites ago i discovered Flux. It wasn't easy accepting it. But like everything in life, i suppose we'll adapt and get used to it eventually.
