funny

I found it so funny...I recently put up my wishlist on my blog wit a powerbook on it...but now think i should remove it....I put it up as a joke asking my friends to get me one but i certainly do not want people giving me charity  ...i wish the people who donated for his mac would also donate to all the homeless and starving people in the world. ....

sounds similar to that college kid who asked for just a penny donation from people to help with his college expenses. Of course as it was only a penny people did, it started to get big press courage and the guy ended up making a fortune because so many people were sending him a penny.

That's cool, I'm used to all the jokes already. I'm not forcing anyone to donate, just for people to realize that if a small fraction of the billions of people that use the net daily would give me a dollar, then i'd have a Mac by now :D

well i did break the half a grand barrier, now having a little trouble breaking the $750 barrier.

any ideas you guys have as to how i can spread the word about this?

id suck it up and buy the darn thing, stop waiting for other folks to pay for it for you, you already want to make the switch so just do it for crying out loud. I swear, the maturity level of some people...

I have an idea to make it cheaper. First of all you will not need the 256MB VRAM to play 1080P. I have been to the Apple store and 1080P plays at full frames on the 17"/20" iMac and MacBook Pro with only the 128MB VRAM. Second, ditch the larger HD. If you run out of space in the future, which might be a hard thing, you can always buy a firewire external drive. Also you can save more money by just getting 1 x 1GB of RAM from Apple and installing another 1GB of RAM yourself from a place like Crucial. You should be able to save ~$250 with these tips.

did you have any bloggers in mind?

Listen, I don't mean to come down too hard on anyone, but this whole concept is so bogus. This guy, Stefan, what is his rationale for getting people to give him money? I don't get it. He lives in a nice house, he's going to college, (University of North Texas I think?), he has a Nintendo DS, a digital camera, and he already has a laptop! And on his blog, he actually implies that his parents have let him down by giving him merely a Pentium II:

"It was time for me to go to college, and I got a 500 MHz Pentium II notebook from my parents. While I could have been angry at them, it was a gift so I accepted it."

Are you kidding me? What is this guy's major malfunction? I'm a young American male, too, but I just can't relate to this. My dad helped me buy a computer when I went to college in 1998 (A 400mhz Dell desktop that lasted me 6 years, with minor upgrades) and I thanked him. Profusely.

If people want to give this guy their money, fine, have fun. I just couldn't watch this spectacle anymore w/out throwing my .02 in. Figuratively. I'm not gonna be giving this guy a penny. I hope he announces what he's going to do if the amount doesn't reach his target, as the "Win my Powerbook" guy has done. He should give it to charity. Anything else is obscene.

The other site, which seems to be getting a lot less donations, "Win my Powerbook", seems to have the right idea. He's not appealing to people by telling them that he's poor and can't afford to buy what he wants himself. He's putting his Powerbook up in a kind of lottery. This "make me switch" guy, on the other hand, would have us believe that he's destitute. That's pathetic.

To Stefan... I'm not much older than you, I'm 24. My family is from Texas. I want to become a switcher too. I don't make a lot of money, so I'm waiting on the new MacBook. If you want to buy a Mac so bad, just save up some more money. A new iMac is not a NEED for college. Food tastes a lot better when you pay for it with the cash you earned on your own, you know what I mean?

My cousin went to UNT btw. I went to the Univ. of Florida, on a scholarship, and I worked through school for the rest. I know you think you don't have it made from where you're standing. But think about what you're asking of people. There are a lot of people out there who've got it a lot worse off than you do. And you want people to give you money to help you buy a Mac?

If anyone reading this has donated money to help Stefan get an iMac, please tell me why. Seriously.

What's sad is that if he'd started a blog trying to raise money for charity, he'd never have made it this far with a couple of videos and comments. That being said, anyone who wants to give some money to a cause that's actually worthy, check out

www.pepyride.org

It's a charity started by a couple American and Canadian friends of mine from my time in Japan. They raise money doing cycling trips and organizing adventure travel. So far they've built and staffed a school in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

I've already said there are plenty more important programs that warrent donations.

I started this blog as an experiment never thinking it would take off. But it has, greatly!

So I'm sorry you don't think what I'm doing is correct, but several people on the internet do :)

Give the friggin money to charity.

Get a part time job, save, and earn your new computer.

This just irritates me beyond belief.

Edit: Every year tens of millions of people don't go to college because they can't afford to. Hundreds of millions have no education at all, and you're fussed because you don't have the latest computer.
That money would save LIVES in Africa, and you're sponging off peoples good nature - that means less for the people who actually need that money.

While I think giving money to a guy just to buy a computer is wrong... you would also have to consider the people who donate to him.... They would rather get a guy a computer than donate to a worth while cause.

I think some of you are being a tad critical. Sure, this whole begging online thing doesn't really do it for me, but if there are people willing to go through the humiliation and others willing to contribute then it isn't exactly doing any harm. There are always 'better' uses for money - but there are certainly worse uses than buying someone a new computer.

"winmypowerbook" - it sounds like they just need to sort their credit history out.

wow...

That is hilarious. Seriously, I would never think of doing that. Not to mention, I wouldn't be one to actually give any money to someone was doing that, but whatever works, I guess. I mean, if it is going to get the person to switch to Mac, then more power to him. People waste more money on other useless things (such as a PC), so why not donate to an aspiring Mac user?:)

Take it easy on the guy. I mean, I pay for my stuff, but if he is smart enough to use this method and it works out because of other people, that's not his fault. If people want to give him money for nothing in return then let them, don't bash this guy. I wish you luck, but I think you know that you could have afforded this Mac without the contributions.
