you could have saved up for it. why do you deserve something for free? If you just straight up said you wanted people to give you money for a free computer, it would be a little different. but you give the impression in your videos and posts that you're struggling. in effect you play on people's sympathy by pretending not to have any money.

but you're not struggling. you could have afforded it on your own, by working and saving like everyone else does. you have a Nintendo DS, you go to college, you have a laptop, you have a digital camera, and you probably have a car (?).

and how about saying that you "could have been angry with (your parents)" for giving you a laptop for college? what is up with that? do you think they owe you more?

of course ppl are free to donate to you if they want to. i'd just like to hear you justify why you deserve it. is that so hard?

And most importantly, what are you going to do with the money when people stop donating (as they already have), and you don't even get close to your goal? You should donate it to charity.

(boy, I wonder what it would be like to drive a Ferrari. Maybe I'll ask people to buy me one.)

i think it is kinda funny how people are getting so upset about the whole thing. If you dont like it.... dont give him money. i wont donate to him because, as much as i think it is interesting...... i dont really much care if he gets one or not. that said. I am really fascinated by what he is doing.... serisouly he is pushing 1000 bucks here soon. that is impressive. I am not sure why people are donating but they are, more power to you buddy. You dont seem to by lying to them, you seem very upfront about it. I would say that the best way to spread the word is to just try to contact some tech or mac podcasts. that could be really good free publicy. I really am kinda amazed that people are supporting this..... good luck with youre mac.... you will love it!

these are aiming high, but the maccast might be a good one..... TWIT(this week in tech)

twit is pretty huge but worth a try.

Seriously, just stop spamming. If you cannot figure out how to drive traffic to your site maybe you shouldn't be having one in the first place. Asking people to buy you superflous things like computers?
Sorry but I have to agree with others here. It does make one sick.

there will always be people who don't agree with what i'm doing, but there are also a few who think what i'm doing rocks! so i'm taking my chances.

i don't really consider it spamming since i really do want to join the Mac community.

I don't see the reason why people would give money to this guy when he has a nintendo DS and nice cellphone. I'm sure they wouldn't mind helping to pay for the iMac.

I myself am trying to raise money for a [maybe refurbished] ibook (see my profile page) but at least I'm making a pact to donate 30% of it to a children's cancer hospital (St. Judes) and make up for the rest of the money with my own sweat.

Note: don't even leave this guy comments on his blog. He'll delete them. I left him a note suggesting a good Microsoft One Note replacement and he instead deleted it because he was afraid it would "drive traffic away".

I'm not asking anyone to donate to my own cause, but any cheer for support would help. In addition, I also provide the link to St Judes if you would rather donate directly to them.

I look at this as just a shot. I have made blog entries in the past (and in fact earlier today I removed a signature that went to a blog entry about my "MacBook Pro Foundation"). They are mostly a joke, I mean who is going to send money? But also, I have heard about people being able to gain money by setting up webpages or making blog entries talking about wanting money for one purpose or another. So I say as long as they are being honest, there is nothing wrong with them asking.

My friend raised $400 by walking around school begging for money, which he used to get his video iPod. He told people that is why he was going to buy, and they gave him the money. Why? You would have to ask the people. The truth is, in some cases it works.

Sounds like my father, "If you don't ask, you'll never get anything."

RE: Charity

While I agree it is wrong, it is ingenious. I wont be donating to the cause because I agree that people who have money to donate should really consider helping out charities, churches and to the obliteration of diseases and such not so some whiney kid who feels entitled can get a nice new shiney computer. You want to switch? Go ahead nobody is standing in the way. You don't have enough money you say? Get a freakin job... jerks like this is the reason people are intollerant in the world... they just don't think
Grow up, get a job and switch but please stop asking for handouts... your as bad as the line outside of the federal building with people waiting for food stamps...don't ask other people to pay your way... pay for it yourself...
end rant
:D

There's a lot of people here, including myself who grew up less than fortunate, who have busted their A$$es to survive in this world.

I had my first job before I turned 14 and haven't taken a break since then
over the last 40 years.

There are millions who have no idea where they will spend the night or get their next meal or even find water.
Babies dying in their mothers arms from starvation and disease.

Thousands more who have recently lost loved ones, their homes, their jobs and their dignity.

And here, you're asking for a free handout so you can buy a cooler computer.

tisk tisk

If you want to join the "Mac Community" how about you get your computer the way most of us did? Work, then buy it yourself, get some help from your family, sell some old stuff you don't need anymore, etc. There is something fairly pathetic about begging for money. But honestly if people want to give you money, thats their business.

Children, Children. Settle down. This guy isn't forcing people to donate to his cause!

You're all yelling at him for what other people are doing! I think it's totally A-OK to give a dollar or two for a cause like this, because let's face it, I've got a dollar or two to spare on something called "leisure spending" and if I feel like donating a dollar so someone can get a Mac, it's not like I spent a whole lot. I spend more on a subway token anyway.

You're all just angry because you didn't think of it.

Perhaps you might consider a more worthy cause.

I am involved in a project to help a severely handicapped child who is unable to communicate at all. She is also unable to control her hands in any meaniful way. She has been tube fed since birth.
Now 8 years old, it will be a miracle if she makes it to her teens.

Kacey suffers from a rare condition known as Canavans disease.

She uses a head switch to move the mouse across the display, but is unable to click or select an item.
After more than 2 years of research, a massive brainstorming effort, Make A Wish donated a 17" PowerBook to the cause.

Working with Make a Wish and Apple and The Archimedes Project founder and the collective skills of several universities, we may be able to help one severely handicapped child finally be able to communicate with her mother.

Neil Scott, The Archimedes Project founder is personally trying to develop a special switch and recruit custom written software to contol it just for this one special child.
http://archimedes.hawaii.edu/

The custom tooling to manufacture this device will run into the thousands.

If you have funds for a worthy cause, perhaps you might consider helping
to design a switch for one very special little girl.

Update: This guy just had a guy donate over $1000. He was going to order but realized that there was tax involved so it will take him a few more weeks to get the tax money.

I was going to bump this thread myself but you beat me too it.

Yep I'm amazed as well, I only need $227 and this Mac will be all mine :)

F***ing hell, people are pointing out much better things to do with this money and you're still obsessed with getting a shiny new toy!!!

I don't think it is ingenious. I think he is a scumbag, and people giving him money are idiots. If I could hit him over the head hard and take the money he got so far, I would do it, add the same amount again, and give it to Oxfam. Together with his watch, his shirt and his trousers.

That would help a lot of people who actually _need_ the help, and teach the guy to work for what he wants.

Too tight to even pay the tax. At this stage anyone who gives to him is not even giving it to him, they're giving it to the government.

Good God, what a warped world we live in.
