Antz: Cool to hear, hope you're satisfied with your setup. What version of OSX are you running? Its hard to compare boot time exactly because I still have the login page activated. I'll try removing it when getting home but as of now it takes aprox 15 seconds to get to that screen on mavericks for me.

I land on about 23 seconds from start to the dock anf desktop stuff has finished loading. Yoyr drive's superior speed is bottlenecked by the SATA II limitation.

Cheers, Mavericks, I tried Yosemite but had issue with failing to shut down-got spinning wheel to hours sometimes! Also the below was not surpported.

Are you wired or wifi
If you are wifi and have a duel band (2.4,5GHz) router/modem you could try the Edimax dongle from OWC it's a 5Ghz only.

I tested it with transfering the same video file from the MM to a NAS.
I got close to their advertised 3x speed boost

2.4GHz (transmit rate= 130)n 14.08 sec 106MB = 7.53MB/s= 60.24Mb/s
5GHz (transmit rate = 300)n 6.32sec 106MB = 16.77MB/s = 134.16Mb/s
5GHz (transmit rate 433)ac 5.1sec 106MB = 20.78MB/s = 166.24Mb/s
2.76x (3x with rounding up!)
I have a 1300ac dual band modem/router

This makes a noticable difference when I'm watching BBC iPlayer (Hola-Firefox) here in NZ with none to very little buffering.

I have ethernet connected and my wifi's activated (I assume it will only use the wifi if the ethernet goes down).

Never really had any issues with streaming (some youtube occasions have demanded some buffering) on the mini. My main problem was the dropped frames on 1080p files even if they were on the main harddrive. They disappeared when replacing the HDD with the SSD.

How long have you had yours?

I got the mini about 3 yrs ago, but have only just put the SSD into it(end of last month-got a tech guy to do it, didn't feel happy doing it myself-had a look once decided NO!!!).
I ran the OS for a long time (2.5+yrs) from a Fw800 with originally a V4 256Gb then the M4, that worked surprisingly well even though a lot threads said it would be slow when I was doing my research.
The main difference I see comparing the two setups is the boot times with the Pro being twice as fast, but day to day use there is not a hugh difference. Yes Blackmagic show a BIG difference (267ish to 107ish)but thats not real world use.

Yeah that disc swap was definitively not something for newbies... I did it in a last resort kind of action.

Interesting sollution with OSX running from the external drive. As far as I can tell your boot-up time with that one is similar to the one I had with the original 5400RPM disk.

Whats your main use? Streaming, file playing etc.

Hi
Watching iPlayer mainly, email etc
Kids use it for their kiddy games

My original HDD must have been a dud as its boot time was over 90sec!
