Help me understand why people Jones for Android and Pre?

I have been using the iPhone since it first came out and it has made drastic improvements since then. I am still amazed at the things that it does and keep my business going on the road. I use Mobile Me and it syncs my contacts, calendar, and and photos. I have 1200 customer names etc. that are synced and it is like having a mobile office in my car. I can place customer orders while on the road and am even thinking about canceling my air card for my laptop.
Now my question, why do people Jones for Android and the Pre? The only thing that I see that it does that the iPhone does not is multitask. Big deal, it takes only a second and a couple of clicks and I am in another program. I just don't get it, the iPhone has most if not all of the kinks worked out and is a solid platform, why even look at some other phone.

Just my rant and I couldn't think of giving up my iPhone.
 
Because some people think the iPhone is a full fledged computer when in fact it is a mini-computer to use on-the-go and not to ask demanding stuff from.

Some people have gone as far as replacing their laptops with an iPhone. Hence, they complain
 
sinsin my post was not a attention getting post. I really was interested. You don't know me so keep your comments to your self since you don't know why I asked the question. I have owned the Pre, numerous BB's and iPhones and think the the iPhone is still the best.
 
then I would

go to a Pre and Android forum you are more likely to find more people jonesing there then here. though we do have a few here that just won't leave. this is a Apple forum so 95% of us Jones for the Iphone. :rolleyes:
 
One size does not fit all.

Just because you think that the iPhone has it all, others do not. For some just that its not apple is enough to buy an Android or a Pre. Then there's folks who are palm fans and been waiting for the palm pre. The same goes for Android and its open source underpinnings.

Personally I could easily be tempted with an Android or a Pre. To me, its just a phone, a tool. While I love the design, the polish and apple's obsessive attention to details. Its still just a tool and a very expensive tool at that.

I'm incredibly loyal, read fan-boy, to my macs but that doesn't extend to my phone purchasing decisions. I want something that fulfills my needs at a decent price. The iPhone does that, at least fulfill my needs - the jury is out on a decent price.
 
If the iPhone does everything you need, and you're happy, that's good.

But you might as well ask why people like different models of cars. Or clothes. Or friends. Or food.

There are millions of people who don't need the iPod part. There are even millions who don't care about web browsing. (Scary, eh?) They might want something as simple as a decent navigation program that doesn't go dead on a call. Or push mail that doesn't chew up battery life. Or they like customizing their UI. Or want to Sling over 3G. And millions also like physical keyboards. So it goes.

As for flipping between programs, being as good as multitasking... umm, no. That's the same defensive argument we heard back in the 1980s when single tasking computer users resisted multitasking computers. The multitasking ones won the battle over two decades ago. Can you imagine stopping one program on your Mac before you could start another?
 
I believe it is the desire or dream of total customization. The hope of open source is that one day there will be the vast variety of applications like there are for the iPhone but no Apple restricting what is allowed on the phone.

This would be the ultimate environment where you could pick the mix of apps you like, that do whatever you want, with no one moderating your choices to create a user experience they desire, which may not be what you desire.

The big issue I've seen with open source is that without an Apple, someone working to establish and maintain some consistency in the user experience, the apps that are created are often very innovative but very dissimilar in user experience. Without the consistency, mainstream users find it confusing, leaving behind us geeky enthusiast who don't mind a few rough edges or command line work. Case in point - Linux. The Linux desktop environment has made the greatest penetration into the mainstream when Canonical entered the game as the Apple for Linux. Some one to establish and maintain a consistent user experience that is attractive to mainstreamers.

Your trying to understand that is like a Windows user trying to understand an Apple fetish - don't try to understand, just accept and let live. I hope these devices rock, because with healthy competition Apple will be forced to further perfect the iPhone.

Agreed. I have owned several Palm devices over the years, and when the Pre came out I looked long and hard at it. In the end, I didn't get it, but it still is a nice phone.

Tell you the truth it is a good comparison.
Your iPhone 3GS is what 600 mHz. Plus it has what 128 megs of ram.
Lets compare this to a old computer dating to 1996. This computer from 1996 has a 133 Mhz pentuim chip in it with 16 megs of ram. Yes you got that right 16 megs of ram.
that old computer there could multitask with out killing to speed. That included playing music while surfing the net and having other things run.
I am just pointing out to you that the iPhone greatly out powers much older computers with a lot less processing power and those could multitask.

As for why people like the Pre and the Android over the iPhone. Lets see they can multitask iphone can not.
1. mobile me is over rated. Google sync handles Calendar, and contacts great and those are by far more important than pictures. Google Mail handles mail pushing pretty well a lot like mobile me so that removes it.
2. They can multitask
3. Pre and Android apps are not put under a strangle hold of Apple. Apple in some way limits innovation not helping it on the iPhone.
4. Much more customing the phone over the iPhone. The iPhone is very limited on what you can do to customize how you want it.

I will add google sync kills off a good part of the mobile me syncing plus. I have it on my Blackberry and love it because the 2 most important things are handled which is Calendar and contacts. with the Gmail app my email is even taken care of.
 
People are different, therefore their needs are different and so their choices of phones are different. How can that be so hard to understand?

That's why I'm jailbroken and have iRealQuickSMS, so I have to exit an app to reply to an SMS or make a new one. I would hate to go back to not having that feature, it feels like it is naturally part of that phone now. :)

Sounds like my 2007 model Japanese phone!
Why the iPhone handles things the same way is beyond me

I am a little disappointed there isn't an elegant solution for it yet...

Because some people like to think different. ;)

Seriously though, as others have said it's horses for courses. Not everyone has the same needs. Not everyone wants to be on AT&T. Not everyone can afford what Apple and AT&T charge. Not everyone wants to take the road more traveled.

Sounds like a good reason to keep multitasking off the iPhone, but not a good reason to keep multitasking off apparently better engineered phones. ;)

Personally I just got bored looking at the same GUI every day for the last 2 years! I guess I could have JB'd but wanted a change! No regrets. Looking forward to what Apple have lined up next year, for my money the 3GS was a massive disappointment - I dont know what I was expecting but I guess I thought it was gonna be groundbreaking! Dont know why!
 
well if you want to be specific with iPhone, Pre, and Android, perhaps for some people it comes down to the network. For me I went with the iPhone purely because AT&T is the only carrier with service on my block. My girlfriend has sprint because it gives her the most for the cheapest price, some people just dont want to leave a provider that they are comfortable with.

Agreed, I think there's a lot of that, Where I live (Boston) I have no such issues, both ATT and Verizon have great signal strength, but I realize that not every community has such great signal strength and you need to pick a carrier that you can actually use ;)

why do you feel the necessity to tell apple how fan you are?

who cares? you want to know why other people using other phones? is freedom such a surprise thing? or you think iPhone is 100% fit 100% people's needs?

either way, the question is stupid.
