I dident even know the Android and Pre were still around ....

You should probably get out a little more then, in fact Palm is releasing a new palm pixie and there's a few new Android phones that really seem to have it all together.

Android handsets are showing up all over the world, from a wide range of manufacturers. We're all going to have to start paying closer attention to it. The HTC Sense UI looks super nice.

Palm just announced the Pixi, which is a slate version of the Pre. Both ATT and Verizon have said they want to sell both models. Verizon even has future stock numbers for them.

Tell you the truth it is a good comparison.
Your iPhone 3GS is what 600 mHz. Plus it has what 128 megs of ram.
Lets compare this to a old computer dating to 1996. This computer from 1996 has a 133 Mhz pentuim chip in it with 16 megs of ram. Yes you got that right 16 megs of ram.
that old computer there could multitask with out killing to speed. That included playing music while surfing the net and having other things run.
I am just pointing out to you that the iPhone greatly out powers much older computers with a lot less processing power and those could multitask.
These older computers were plugged into wall, where battery drainage was never an issue.

I'm playing a game.
Girlfriend texts me.
*Hits CLOSE*
Continues playing game.
Girlfriend texts again.
*Hits CLOSE* again.
*Thinks "stop bothering me from my game! don't you understand? i can't exit to respond to your message without exiting my game!"*
Continues playing game.
Girlfriend texts me again.
*Hits CLOSE*
I finally beat the game.
I feel proud of myself and eat some cereal.
I completely forget about the texts, because there is no visible notification.
I get severely punished later by the girlfriend.

Great way to put it!!! I hate that, and is even worse in Sandstorm, since if you accidentally click on reply and are taken to SMS app to text to the girlfriend...........you have to start from the beginning of the level!!! I hate that!

But that IS multitasking. That's one of the places where the iPhone is running more than one program at the same time.

Your problem is that the controls are poorly designed. They should allow you to type a reply to texts in that little blue 'alert' box instead of having to show the full text-message program to respond.

But that's a software design issue, not a "there's no multitasking" issue. Your game, the texts, the phone, and e-mail are all working at the same time to some extent...the fact that they don't give you remote access to the controls for those things is the problem here. That's what people need...not more multitasking ability, but more access to the multitasking that's already taking place.

Yep, history may repeat itself. Apple could lose huge market share due to their want supreme control over hardware and software... Hmm, sounds like the early mac vs pc days all over again...

That's also the main reason behind the huge success of the iPod.

So your theory is that the iPhone is more like a desktop in 1984 than an MP3 player in 2001?

Interesting, I would guess the other way around.

Personally, it's because I like hardware keyboards. And I don't like the notifications system on the iPhone.

I have used Palm OS, Windows Mobile, Symbian, and iPhone OS phones. I think the iPhone OS is great but it's not perfect. And from what I've seen of Android, it may fit with my needs in a way the iPhone does not; my email, calendar and contacts are all through google, and the phones come in a variety of hardware configurations. Plus there's no restriction on background apps. Let ME decide what does/does not impact my battery life above and beyond what is acceptable.

Competition is a good thing. The iPhone does not fit every user, and it won't fit every user, even if Apple tore down every restriction and opened the floodgates.

Be glad that Apple has serious competition, as that can only improve the iPhone immensely.

Why would you think that? cell phones are turning more into ultra portable computers than music players. iphone should remain a major player for a few years since there may be too much competition in smart fone arena (iphone, bb, wm, google, palm, symbian, etc). But there also may be some consolidation over the next few years...

Yes, and people want their on-the-go computer to be simple to use and reliable, which a software-with-hardware vendor provides. They do not want something that demands tinkering and fiddling with that the hardware-without-software vendors have provided for the last 25 years of home computing.

They tried that and it worked ok for desktops, but people are deciding that they want something easier than that in their pocket.

You want proof? Aren't the most popular smart phones from RIM, Apple, and Palm?

All 3 of those are making their own software and hardware. Coincidence?

EDIT: (You really don't need any more examples than just Blackberries! According to you they're also "making the same mistake Apple made" in the 80's. But don't you think that RIM has proven themselves to be pretty successful by now?)

Good point about simplicity...that is important. Do google phones require that much tinkering? I thought they were fine right out of the box. BTW I thought google and WM smart phones were more popular than palm..?

I have no experience using them. All I know is that analysts are wondering if Google should make their own phone in order to compete with these other companies. (The current Android phones are good, but not nearly as popular.)

So all I know is that people who understand this stuff even more than I do are suggesting Google moves in this direction.

BTW I thought ... WM smart phones were more popular than palm..?

Maybe for current sales numbers, but it's very clear that Palm is moving up and WM is moving down.

Obviously I can't predict the future and antying can happen, but I would put strong odds on Palm being very successful in 2010 and WM not so much.

I think thats more applicable to M$ than google. I'd like to see a zune phone... HTC seems to be doing a pretty good job with their android offerings so far..still waiting on moto  BTW, you give analysts too much credit. They speculate just like all of us..they just get paid for it ;)

I agree on this. WM may be the odd man out in the mobile OS wars. I expect M$ to try to buy one of its competitors. They made a mistake for not buying palm shares when it was a penny stock...
